I have a great Eric Burdon story: as a 10-year-old in 1967, my parents took me to see a “ shower of stars” show in Birmingham, AL with Eric Burdon and the animals, Sam the Sham and the pharaohs, Herman’s Hermits, Paul Revere, and the Raiders. We wound up staying in the hotel where all the bands were staying. The next morning, my father was loading the trunk of our brand new Pontiac Bonneville. Burdon, who was sitting out on the steps in front of the lobby, was very impressed with the car and my dad asked if he would like to drive it. he was thrilled and jumped in with my dad next to him and me in the backseat. We drove around downtown Birmingham for about 10 or 15 minutes, talking about cars and music. I have always wanted to reach out to him to see if he remembers that story.

I lost a fight at a ZZ Top concert in the 80s. It happened near the stage, and when it was over, Billy Gibbons was grinning down at me like I just got my ass beat. Years later, Facebook got invented, and I commented on his page about the incident, described what I was wearing, what happened, how it turned out, etc, and asked him if he remembered me. Ten years later he upthumbed my comment.

I just turned 16 in June of 1967. I friend and I had scored tickets for the Monterey Festival for the afternoon show on Sat. We lived in San Jose and neither one of us had a drivers license. We had to get up very early in the morning and hitchhike to Monterey (about 70 miles) and get there before the afternoon show started. We were a little late, but we made it. We saw Canned Heat, Janis Joplin w/ Big Brother and the Holding Co., Steve Miller, Quicksilver, and several other bands. Did not get home until well after 1am and caught hell from my parents. I think I was grounded for most of high school. But, it was more than worth it. We lived in the best times for rock music.

I saw him later on in the ´80s and early ´90s with other bands. He is a phenomenal live performer. He gives it everything he has. Saw Eric Burdon and his Flying Eye Band about 20 years ago at the Mushroom Mardi Gras in Morgan Hill, CA. Since it was a small gig, he came out an hour early for sound check and just hearing him warm up his voice 15/20 ft away gave me goose bumps. Played this song, Sky Pilot, House of the Rising Sun, Spill the Wine and many other Animals hits. Pals and I were tripping. Awesome singer and funny too. He was well known for his use of psychedelics so, since it was the Mush festival, he would stop after every four or five songs and ask, "So, where are the mushrooms?" He hung out and signed my CD after and talked to those of us who stuck around for a little while. Great time.

“Garden Party” by Rick Nelson is a story song about his disastrously received performance at a show at Madison Square Garden. He sings about the other performers at the show who sang their oldies hits as they were recorded. He also talks about some of the VIPs like Dylan, Chuck Berry and John Lennon and Yoko who attended the show. During his set, Rick sang some of his 50s hits like “Hello Mary Lou” which went over ok, but the reaction to him singing Dylan’s “She Belongs To Me” and the Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” were met by a chorus of boos from the audience. He was really affected by the reaction and vowed never to perform at one of those shows again. As the song says, “If memories were all I sang, I’d rather drive a truck”.

Ravi Shankar playing sitar….he taught George Harrison how to play sitar and it was revolutionary in some of the Beatles music!

Jay, this might blow your mind…. The great sitar player Ravi Shankar is referenced in this song. His daughter is Norah Jones.

This festival was held at the Monterey County Fair Grounds. I had a chance to visit and touched the stage. It was like a pilgrimage. This event spawned Woodstock.

The Monterey Pop Festival of 1967 was held over 3 days at the Monterey Fair Grounds in Monterey, CA. That's on the Monterey Bay just north of Big Sur area of the central coast between San Francisco and LA. The grand stands in the video are at the horse race track and the crowds we in the field inside the race track. 200,000 people attended the event with over 30 bands performing. It was the west coast version of Woodstock.
