I’m a 49 year old southern guy who was about 8 or 9 when this was released. I think “growling” is fair. However he has a mysterious softness at the same time. It’s a great dichotomy for a vocal style. Like….a rocky or gruff dreamscape. Like a darkly cloudy sky. This genre and this band are not my faves, but I dig it and respect it, full force!

Saw these guys in Sydney earlier this year (or was it last year?) nearly 40 years since I last saw them; same lineup, sounded great and Richard Butler still had the voice (mostly!). What I found amazing was the amount of 20-somethings front and centre trying to get Butler’s attention. It only occurred to me then that the 80’s music culture revival is actually drawing the old bands back to touring, it’s not for us old farts in the wings...

The Furs have been touring since their beginning. I've seen them 6 times since 1981, I believe. Richard Butler used to sing with a cigarette in hand (like Brian Ferry of Roxy Music) until sometime mid to late 80s. I've seen the Furs twice this millenia, and I hear a clearer and improved voice. My last concert seeing them in 2018, the band was great, his voice was the best, and Richard Butler was very entertaining as always. I prefer their early tunes like India and Into You Like a Train. However, every album was a new sound, and you can't go wrong with President Gas, Heaven, Alice's House, and Ghost in You.
