When this song came out, it set a record. The BeeGees were the first band, since the Beatles, to have 5 songs in the top 10, at the same time. The BeeGees, were at their peak, when this came out.

So much misinformation. This song was released a year after the event you are referring to. Barry Gibb was the COMPOSER of 5 songs in the top 10 at the same time. And he did not set a record because as you said, the Beatles (Lennon/McCartney) already had the record. Goodness gracious. I can't believe so many likes for this post. People will believe anything they read.

Richard, nice story, and The Bee Gees DID write 5 songs in the Top 10 all at once on February 25, 1978, when they had #1) "Stayin' Alive" Bee Gees #2) "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water" Andy Gibb #5) "Emotion" Samantha Sang #8) "Night Fever" Bee Gees #10) "How Deep Is Your Love" Bee Gees. AND "Tragedy" WAS the Bee Gee's 5th of 6 #1's in a row when it topped the charts on March 24, and 31, 1979. However, this was 13 months after Barry and the brothers had 5 of the Top 10 songs.

The Gibb brothers wrote both "Tragedy" and "Too Much Heaven" (another American #1), in an afternoon off from making the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie in which they were starring. Then in the evening they wrote another American #1 single, "Shadow Dancing" for their brother Andy Gibb. Stuck for a convincing thunderclap sound, Barry Gibb cupped his hands over a microphone and made an exploding noise with his mouth. Several of these sounds were then mixed together, creating the large boom heard on this song.

This was after the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack so 1979. Their music was influenced by the Delphonics, who was a falsetto band. It wasn’t until the song Nights on Broadway that Barry gave the falsetto a try. Found success with it and was encouraged to keep singing with it. Also, the making of this song in studio is great to watch!

You beautiful people delight me with your enthusiasm. And make me laugh with your innocence. Jay, I love that you love Bee Gees but kind of shake my head a little (with a smile) at how little you know about your favorite band/singer. You gotta keep in mind, this is a big world you're diving into. The Bee Gees put their first album out in 1965. Their 22nd and final album as a band was realeased in 2001. And this whole best-falsetto-ever didn't even become a thing until their 13th album, Main Course, which marked a big change in their sound. You should go back and find the early stuff (some of them great songs with Robin in the lead) like I Started a Joke, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, Words, Lonely Days, Butterfly, Massachusetts, Run to Me. Dive deep! It's a fantastic rabbit hole to explore! Have fun. Love you!

This is PURE Disco-era BeeGees, when they were at their peak of popularity. Total 70's. Some more must-listen 70's era BeeGees: You Should Be Dancing (Super disco bassline), Nights on Broadway, Stayin' Alive, and More Than A Woman. Some non-disco hits: I Started A Joke, I've Gotta Get A Message To You, Massachusetts, Alone, How Deep Is Your Love? The only singer I can think of who MAY be able to do a higher falsetto than Barry is Frankie Valli - check out his song with the Four Seasons "Sherry" (also you should ABSOLUTELY put the theme song for the movie "Grease" on your list - written by the BeeGees, sung solo by Frankie.) Haha. I was in high school. Graduated in 1977-Oneonta High. School, Oneonta, New York-which dates me A LOT. I’m 62 years old. Married for FORTY YEARS to the same guy (hubby always tells me to point out that I’m married to my FIRST husband!) Two sons and one son-in-law-no grandkids-and we think we likely won’t have any grandchildren. Oh, well….

The disco era was about 3 years out of 50 or 60 years. They have distinct, very different eras musically. I fell in love with their 60s music (so romantic), then disco, then excellent music for others and themselves. You can’t put them in a box, except the box marked Unique Excellence.

Exactly while I like their disco and remember when they were releasing those songs. I really prefer other eras more unless I am in the mood to dance like when I was in high school which makes my body hurt for days. I have never heard anyone say this so there is a great possibility I am wrong but I do not believe I have ever heard a male singer sing in falsetto for a continuous time as Barry Gibb. Unless maybe it it would be Marcelito Pomoy (not the correct spelling)

If you really want to go for a different sound to the Bee Gees, you should give their 1987 UK Number 1 single 'You Win Again'. Captured a different feel to their Saturday Night Fever days, and showed a more mature sound to them.

The thunder sound you notice, Amber, is Barry making explosion sound with his hands formed like a megaphone close to the mike and then they amplified sound to add to recording where he wanted to accentuate the sound. It is shown on video while they are in recording studio. They are musical and production geniuses. Maurice is responsible for a lot of production composing for instrumental background in songs they wrote. He sings the sound to the brass to play on song You Should Be Dancing to name one but they all contribute to production sounds and are perfectionists in their execution of music. I loooove them soooo much. I'm with you Robb. The more you see them on utube interviews, the more you fall in love with each one. You have to react to song called Fanny. Beautiful and musically perfect. So happy to hear of someone in your generation discovering them. Better Midler first gained fame as zinger and recording artist. Did that waaay before movies. Her first sound was from 40's, WWII, music. Her sings were covered some by Pointer Sisters performing on TV shows. Movie called "For the Boys" is my favorite of her acting and singing performances. You should watch it. Funny and historical. IT IS SUPERB. Look it up and watch with your wife.

I’m glad that you are one of those that have been able to see the humble Beegee working in an almost perfect anonymous awesome Job , very few people know that Maurice ( Morris ) was the multi instrumentalist and multi talented genius behind nights on Broadway, Heartbreaker , Woman in love , etc , each one one of them shared their talent and came with that incredible and immense and huge explosion of incredible music , they wrote so much music for so many artists and always kept their low profile, they never acted like divos , I’ve lived in Miami for the last 35 years and I had the privilege of watching these guys at the Supermarket, or on any small shop in Miami Beach shopping without a body guard , they were nice with every body, they never acted like Superstars , they were these humble men , shopping like anybody else, that made them very special, these mega Stars and singers , were so humble and nice to everyone, nothing in comparison with those unbearable ones that act like owners of the world , thank you Beegees because you show your greatness on stage and also stopping to talk with everyone who approached you on the store or the sidewalk, you guys , The Beegees were real Menshe , real humble guys and that made you real Great men , thank you guys for being awesome on stage and every where you go , you were the Real Great Ones, Barry, Robin , Maurice ( Morris ) an Andy , you guys will never be forgotten .

There is a video of them in the recording studio putting this song together and it's amazing. Sometimes they get a tune in their head and they work together to get the instrumental part and then write lyrics to the music. It's just incredible. What I think is fascinating is that none of them ever learned to read music. You'll even appreciate this song and their other work even more. The thunder or exploding sound Barry made.
