You're interpretations of the song were very good and meaningful. The lead singer, Simon LeBon, actually wrote the song after a friend's suicide. After the funeral, he was looking through photos of them together and wondering how he would be able to move on and "survive" without his friend (the line "where's my friend when I need you most" was his mindset). After that, he started interpreting all the other meanings it could have and incorporated it into this song, which was kind of their comeback song in early 1992 (they had a massive falling off from their 80s heyday).

@@elcorado83 I never knew this was about a friend's suicide. I'm sorry about your relationship but I think your first love is always special. Maybe (in most cases) your first true romance is never meant to last. Mine didn't either and broke both our hearts. I still play this myself after surviving a decade and a half of psychological abuse married to my ex-partner. Thankfully I'm away from all that now (unfortunately no contact with grown up children either). I guess as Amber said this song can be what you want it to be.

They began pretty pop-y and easy listen but even from the start some songs stood up. But by the time they made this album they decided go fully embrace their artistic ambitions. The mood of the early 90s was that music had to have meaning, as a reaction to the bubblegum shallowness of the music scene in the 80s.

@@TahoeNevadaThey were never a ‘boy band’ because they wrote all their own songs and played their own instruments. ‘Boy band’ is used in the often derogatory sense that a band is manufactured - i.e. put together by someone else and all their material written and played by other people. It's funny that you mentioned that, I was thinking the exact same thing before I scrolled down the comments. I truly believe one of biggest differences between the kids of today and our generation is the messages that we received from our music and entertainment, not denying we didn't have some messed up stuff, we REALLY did, but I believe the 90's ended up being the pinnacle of music, and entertainment, in general. There has been some really good stuff since then but I can see a clear difference in the effect that it has on society.

I have not attended a Thanksgiving dinner or family get together since. It is still too painful for me, even 14 years later. Yes, I’m moving forward, but it’s an incredibly slow journey. When he sings “Where is my friend when I need you most?….(gone away)” it always gets my ‘allergies’ going. It was impressive to me that this prototypical 80s band was able to make a strong comeback in the 90s.

Duran Duran is currently on tour, and I was at their concert in Tampa, Florida, back in June, and they are absolutely amazing. Ordinary World is on their Playlist, and there is another one I would love to see you both react to. It's called Lonely In Your Nightmare. Also, I would like to see your reaction to Missing by Arcadia. Simon's voice will put you in a trance. Love all that you do ❤

Simon's lyrics are often deep and profound. This was apparently written after a friend's suicide. There's a maturity to this one. Not that their other music wasn't. It was very mature considering how young they were in the 80's, bit these are guys in their 30's---husbands, fathers. So growth has occurred. This is my favorite 90s song of theirs. Just so sad and poignant. Also, it's a crowd pleaser when they do it live.

The song is about dealing with the loss of Le Bon's childhood friend, David Miles, who passed away from an overdose. Ordinary World (1992) is part 2 of a trilogy about Miles. Part 1 was written after Miles' passing & the song is called Do You Believe In Shame? (1988). Le Bon felt some guilt about not being there for his friend at the time. And part 3 concludes with the track Out Of My Mind (1997), which is also in the motion picture The Saint w/Val Kilmer. All three songs helped Le Bon grieve & get through his loss as much as he could.

Initially, Simon LeBon wrote this song as a song about the closest friend he had that just passed away. So the song is about losing a friend and experiencing and living and getting through grief. Yeah, he does say if when he gets interviewed that anyone can interpret this song to whatever they feel they relate to and if it helps them then that’s what the song is for. I relate to it as a song living through the loss of someone very close to you.

This song came out a couple of years after one of my friends died. When I heard it, it hit me like a ton of bricks. All of our mutual friends were Durannies, and the lyrics just perfectly described how I was feeling trying to navigate without my friend in my life. Excellent song. So happy you finally got to hear it. I honestly think this might be the best song in Duran Duran’s massive catalog.

That's a great song, isn't it? Yes, about losing someone dear, through death or through a broken relationship (the bit about pride tearing them apart). And yes, having to figure out a way to reach an "ordinary world," a world without the lost dear one, and making a go of that, best you can. The line that always gets me is the one that says, compared to the troubles of the world, "ours is but a little sorrow." What a great lyric. Of course, those "little sorrows" that barely measure on the world's attention, the sorrows of losing a loved one, can be extremely difficult to deal with.
@edwardf103

The song is about Simon Le Bon's (Duran Duran's vocalist & Lyricist) childhood friend who passed away. It is also inspired by the Gulf War 1990-91 to be exact. However, Le Bon, with all of his lyrics/songs, wants the listener to make the meaning whatever it means to them. Ordinary World is part 2 of a trilogy in dealing with the loss of Le Bon's friend, David Miles. Part 1 is Do You Believe In Shame? & part 3 is Out Of My Mind, which was featured in the motion picture The Saint with Val Kilmer.

@@Julieroo28 Hardly. The media termed this a "comeback" because they were shallow and full of false expectations. They never left. Their Notorious (1986) album sold 1 million copies & Notorious (1987) reached #2 in the USA. Big Thing followed the Notorious album & sold 500,000 units & I Don' Want Your Love reached #4 & All She Wants Is released in 1989, reached #22. In the UK it reached #9. Duran Duran released the Liberty album (1990). This was their first overall unsuccessful album. Their single Violence Of Summer peaked at #64 in the US but reached #30 in the UK & #3 in Italy. Duran Duran released the single Serious and it reached #1 in Italy. The band had one album that was not successful with Liberty in 1990. They released Ordinary World in December 1992 and The Wedding Album in 1993. Seriously? You sell a million copies with a hit single in 1986. You sell half-a-million copies with a hit single in 1988 & you miss out w/your first unsuccessful album in 1990. You release an album that sells a million copies in 1993 & this is a "comeback" or a 'huge comeback?" If the Notorious, Big Thing & Liberty all didn't sell and lacked any hits... Yes, this is considered a comeback but not having one unsuccessful album in between is hardly a comeback.

Far and away the best song they ever produced. Until this song I thought of them as just another pop band that overpopulated the airwaves. This made me see them as adults and musicians. The lyrics are brilliant, melody exceptional and that lead guitar crying over the solo is perfect. Great song choice!

Duran are just consistent quality through the years. I don't think I've heard anything I dislike by them. This one, as someone else has said was their "comeback" song in the 90s. Another great one from this time was "Come Undone". Both songs are Duran in a more older, introspective mood imo. All their songs have changed meaning to me over time. I appreciate their earlier work more now. "Ordinary World" has become an anthem of surviving sadness for me, having lost my Mother/best friend a few years ago. Everyone is dealing with suffering to some degree... the end lyrics "Every world is my world" sums this up perfectly. We can take heart that we always overcome sadness and we all share the same feelings at some point. Wonderful reaction as always you two. ❤❤
