This is when he was finally free to produce the kind of music that he wanted to make and that he cared about creating!! He had been Held Back for Years by MOTOWN just wanting to create Trendy Music that they thought would sell and make Them Rich! Marvin wanted to produce Music that meant something and would withstand the TEST OF TIME!!! Well, it's 53 years later!!!

I'm surprised you guys didn't talk more about the lyrics. This song's full title is Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology), and is a heartfelt desperate plea about industrial pollution and the environment. The entire What's Going On album is a call for sanity in what was a rapidly deteriorating world, and I feel it works best when listened to in its entirely. Marvin Gaye and Luther Vandross never met in person, but in 1982 Gaye called Vandross to tell him how much he enjoyed his and Cheryl Lynn's cover of "If This World Were Mine"

Attention? It's pretty clear that they completely missed the entire meaning of the song, as conveyed through the lyrics. They're using adjectives like "peaceful" "dreamy" "genuine" and "beautiful". Meanwhile the lyrics include lines like "Where did all the blue skies go? Poison is the wind that blows. Oil wasted on the oceans and upon our seas. Fish full of mercury. Radiation underground and in the sky. Animals and birds who live nearby are dying. What about this overcrowded land? How much more abuse from man can she stand?"
