Jaw-dropping Lion Pride Hunts Buffalo & Grieving Herd's Unexpected Return

An incredible lions vs buffalo sighting, rather dramatically described in the media as "one of the rarest and most heartbreaking scenes ever captured in the wild", of the Mangheni lionesses catching a buffalo turned into an even more amazing sighting when the buffalo herd returned to try to revive their fallen teammate.
It is not uncommon for buffalo herds to try to rescue a member that has been taken by lions, or even chasing lions from a meal, but I have never seen a herd licking and nudging a member of the group that is already dead.
This lion vs buffalo encounter has since gone viral on many platforms but this is the original clip.

It's so crazy how basicly the lions apply a choke hold on it, limiting its oxygen and then it's a done deal. Somehow very similar to human fighting where a choke hold will end a fight fast.

Sexy Homeowner Well actually no, the hold on the neck is the same basic concept-they clamp down on the windpipe to suffocate the prey. The problem with buffalo is that their neck is just too thick for a lioness’ mouth to properly asphyxiate (a male lion usually can, however, which is why they’re sometimes seen joining the hunt when there’s a fully-grown buffalo involved), so instead she’ll go for the nose and mouth and bite through the nostrils so that the buffalo basically starts inhaling and eventually drowning in its own blood.

I think the Jeeps pretty much led the Buffalo or to where the lions were. There's so many humans and jeeps running around that area it's ridiculous that can't be natural.

i really enjoyed while iam at work. u know more than me about animals but in this case they were not trying to wake up the animal but they are smelling from the lion and some they may attack. if he was to wake up even the herd will never except him just like that. it take days to be totally in the herd because of the smell of the lion. so rob iam sure u encounter many things in animal but thats hw nature works. I have seen a small wild beast save by a lioness after returning to the herd every member of the herd is chasing young wild beast because they smell a lion smell thats y they are attacking. some people were are they chasing the young one but thats hw nature works.

Good job, great catch! I so love watching them stalk their prey! Awesome camera work, great sound. It's crazy how the lion are able to cover the mouth of their prey, able to stop the sound..Very smart of them. Thank you Rob, for all you do! Your certainly the best out there! Peace~ P.S. Omg that was so sad and sweet! Why did they not come back when the lions first attacked I wonder because I have seen many videos where they usually come back right away to save a member of their herd? That was just amazing and the sweetest saddest thing I have ever seen! I thought by title though the buffalo would be saved before death!
