I am so sorry for CPL Ira Hayes. He had PTSD, before it was recognized as such. He left it all on the battlefield. He had nothing else left to give. He was one hell of a Marine. Semper Fi Marine. I'd be honored to visit your grave in Arlington. I was born a Marine 8-7-67, still a Marine today.

Very impressive performance from Tony Curtis. Ira Hayes’s story is an extremely tragic one.

This movie didn't do right for Ira Hayes. Ira was a qualified Paramarine, although they didn't make any combat jumps. He also saw combat before Iwo Jima,on Bougainville with the 3rd Marine Division. That's where he met Mike Strank. Ira also had problems with alcohol before joining the Marine Corps. He'd been arrested for Drunk and Disorderly and believe he needed a waiver to join. He was a loner, but was liked and respected by his buddies. He wasn't the kind of guy to take any crap from his peers. He was a good, reliable Marine. That alone deserves respect.

That alone deserves a lot of respect!! I remember his story well I saw this many years ago!! he was a damn good soldier I hate life dragged him down!! I'm a military history buff like my dad and am thankful for what all these guys did for this nation!!! 💪🇺🇲

I once had a friend who had been in the Marines in Vietnam. His Father had been Navy. He had been one of those officers of the Ranks surrounding Tojo on the Missouri. He was blown straight up in the air from a seated position in a Deuce and a Half. Half of the people who he lives and fought with died in that instant. As he flew up into the air he said that: "I remember being terribly concerned about my Mother."

Most of TC's career was of him being a more or less playboy, here, in this film, he actually is given the chance to act. I think he does it quite well. As for the real man, Ira, he was just one of many that the American machine of stardom destroyed and combat turned nice young men into something they had no concept of.

Great movie. I read 'Flags of Our Fathers' by James Bradley, son of the Navy Corpsman flag raiser, who may not have been a flag raiser after all. There was always a little controversy about the true identity of some of the flag raisers. I've been reading that Rene Gagnon and John Bradley were misidentified and did not participate in the 2nd flag raising.

The training of these Marine commandos is so intense. Months of drill, exercise, live-firing, etc. Then when they storm the beaches of Iwo Jima, so many of them are mown down by Japanese artillery and machinegun fire in the first few minutes. Such a waste .

Marine Commandos are British.... US Marines are known as .... US Marines. No finer friend. No worse an enemy. You would not want to defend a position.... against US Marines. 👀

Never made it into the US Coast guard, like I wanted too. I hyper extended my right knee, jogging to get into shape. If I made it in, I would have retired 6 years ago. What a waste of my pathetic life, no retirement, no decent career, only factory assembly work. I am useless as you know what on a bull cow.

Camp Pendleton is not in Sad Diego. It's in Oceanside. It was not the Marine Boot Camp. That was the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) on Rosecrans in San Diego. MCRD is now on Pacific Avenue West of Interstate - 5... in San Diego. In WWII they may well have used Camp Pen as a Recruit Depot. I dont know.... but it is not in San D
