As someone who’s from Philly and went to public school I can say the public schools are trash and needs alot of funding. If u can get your kids in private school do it 🤷🏾♂️
@paperbagproductions1034 ай бұрын
Private schools are not better and they do not benefit black and brown children. Especially if they have a learning disability. Why would the answer be let poor parents fight over money for private schools instead of lets give this 300 million to the public schools to fix the issues. Philly is gentrified, yet none of those extra property taxes are going to the schools in those neighborhoods.
@NickHarvey.4 ай бұрын
Public schools have had decades to get it together. Parents should have every right to decide where they feel is best for their child. Charter schools have to put out a good product to continue to get students (which equals more money). Pubic schools have zero incentive to get better.

@@jmar5127 I can tell you have a public school education as well. 60s,70s,80s,90s,00s, and 10s there wasn’t as many charter schools. So public schools had their full share of the funding. Parents weren’t happy with the outcome so thats why we see the emergence of charters. From the 90s parents would try to get different addresses to get their children in better schools this makes it so they don’t have to leave the city they live. My public high school in westchester county had people from the bronx and other neighboring cities because their zone school was horrible. Almost 20 years later and most of those schools are just as bad.

Thank you, Ebro, for your take on this. Some people don't realize how the voucher system guts the public schools. It helps some lucky students, but it takes away much-needed funds from strapped public school systems

As a parent that raised children in Philly, I can tell you the private schools are just as bad. Poor parents cannot afford to send their kids to private schools and it doesn't make sense to make them fight over, nowhere near, enough money. The private schools do not provide for kids with learning disabilities and they never have staff that can relate to poor black and brown children. If the problem is with schools, fix the schools. That 300 million would help a lot more black and brown children that grew up the way Sean Carter grew up if we send it to the public schools! Parents have complained about the treatment of children in public schools since its conception.
@sxt44474 ай бұрын
Exactly! Jay Z did not grow up going to private school. If you claim that you’re such a wordsmith, who do you think taught you how to read, write and become the man you are today? Wouldn’t you want to help the public school system that you were raised in? It’s so strange to me lol

Why is school choice a bad thing? My mother works in a public school and she says it's broken as heck. The powers that be would rather put money in foreign powers' pockets rather than take care of issues at home. People should have a right to choose when the state option does what the state option does.
@paperbagproductions1034 ай бұрын
Everyone will not have to opportunity to have that choice, kids will still be left behind. Send that money to the broken schools not the private schools that are already thriving!
@sxt44474 ай бұрын
Because charter schools and private schools are not obligated to enroll everyone, which means many children will end up being left behind with nowhere to go. As someone who began at public school and went to a private high school, I was far more intelligent and curious than my classmates who grew up in private schools because the private schools weren’t obligated to teach them basic historical facts that everyone in the state school systems had to know to qualify for the next level. The idea that private school is inherently better just because it’s private is classist and racist.

Because it’s not really a choice. Not everyone is given the option, additionally the funds are coming from tax dollars. So though your kid might not be in the program you are paying for someone else’s kid to be.

I received an excellent education from my public school on the Southside of Chicago and went on to receive a full scholarship for college. I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without my public elementary school and the incredible teachers who worked there and cared for me deeply. The reason public schools are suffering is because of the lack of pay for teachers and the lack of funding for education. If the government would put just half of the amount they invest in military spending towards public education, the country would be in much better shape.

I don’t have a problem with this. Public schools have had 40 years. To get thstmstlvrs together. They haven’t. So send the money. Where it’s being used properly. And let the parents decide. It’s bad enough. They don’t pay teachers.

@victorjohnson8374 You took the words out of my mouth. All this sanctimonious pearl clutching about money being taking away from public schools that have had at least 50 years to fix. Strangely enough,Jay,is historically anti Catholicism. Now,I’m not certain where these children would be sent,but I’ve heard catholic schools are involved . ultimately,reappropriating funds creates a deficit,when donations from the community would release the stress on the system and create a budget surplus. Obviously any new surplus should still be watched over to make sure it goes where it’s intended,but that is par for the course.
