You've done a good job of listing the number of motivations and interest in the American cause by France. But each of them belong to different people or factions. The king, his army, the people of France, the average aristocrat, Lafayette himself all had different motives, etc.

This episode does not concern the territory of the USA. When you deal with history, forget about morality and the projection of modern points of view as much as possible, otherwise you are doing revisionism. Whether you like it or not, Rochambeau is decisive for the victory of the revolutionaries of America.
