Just rename it to Music Hall of Fame and someone like Mariah Carey will be justified. Funny story about Mariah, I attended a music festival in NYC where she and Metallica were on the same bill. Mariah went on first and then Metallica. When Metallica took the stage, all of the Mariah fans left in droves with a horrified look on their face not knowing what was going on while all the metal heads went crazy. It was one of the funniest things I've seen at a show. And Mariah is "rock and roll."

Happy Birthday Larry! Yes, I do agree with you that the older acts should be in the Rock nRoll Hall of Fame before the ones that came in the late '80s and '90s and the 1st decade of the new millennium. The Rock... Foundation does throw a wide net and expands the definition and scope of Rock music and the want to appeal to younger generations, so that is part of the reasons why Mary J Blige, Mariah Carey, Oasis, and A Tribe Called Quest have been nominated. I will be very happy when Sparks is nominated ... in my lifetime. 😉

It’s basically the popular music hall of fame. It was rock and roll hall of fame back then because rock and roll was majority of “popular music” back jn the day. Nowadays rock and roll is 5% of popular music and it no longer makes sense to just stick to “rock and roll” as we used to think. There is no pop hall of fame, hiphop hall of fame, R&B hall of fame etc anyway.

If Rock N Roll were to be defined as anti-establishment, which I will do here, then The Hall of Fame is The Establishment, an oxymoron and little to do with Rock N Roll. Probably now we've reached a point where it's more Rock N Roll not to be there. Ian Anderson of the Tull seems to wear it as a badge of honour and what's more Rock N Roll than Motorhead. Not inducted and all dead. By the same token, Foreigner wouldn't scare a 4 year old and not strictly Rock N Roll either. There is indeed an argument to say that Eric B & Rakim - at the forefront of a then-new anti establishment movement - are more RnR than Cher (showbiz) Lesson is not take the RnR Hall of Fame seriously at all.

Its not the Rock Hall of Fame. All of these acts make music that is in one way or another derived from the music that was called Rock and Roll. And there are actually just ways to make stuff more complicated and lead to even more debate. Oh, and I like DMB, one of the best live bands in music history.

Larry, tell me if you agree, the only people that should be considered for the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame are artists or acts that were “in their time” considered to be rock n’ roll. For instance, Elvis was undeniably the King of Rock n’ Roll in the late 50’s, but by the early 60’s he had clearly gone mainstream pop. However, although he may have gone pop, in his time (the late 50’s) he was definitely identifiable as a rock n’ roll artist. Queen would be another example. In the 70’s they were unmistakably rock, but by the early 80’s that had gone pop R&B. Once again, were they not rock in their heyday? In addition, since rock is constantly changing, some forms of rock music and acts of the past would not be considered rock today by current standards. An example would be rockabilly. In the 1950’s rockabilly WAS rock n’ roll, but today it would be seen more as a form of country, so any artist performing it today would not qualify unlike an artist of the 1950’s. I think if the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame had used this standard as a template, then there would have never been any country, rap, R&B, or adult contemporary acts in the Hall of Shame.

I'm not that strict... but it should be rock based music overall.
@ChrisC7098 ай бұрын
@@LarryGravesCanadianStudmuffinI disagree. The term "Rock and Roll" does NOT mean only rock music. That's a ludicrous thing to say. And besides if you look at the entire history of the the inductees, many of them are R&B/Pop artists. So all of a sudden the committee supposed to change their position on that? Too late for that. Also, there should be more women inducted too. It's too male dominated. And this committee needs to be more diverse. Obviously too many white men voting on the committee. If you want a "Rock" music Hall of Fame then you should petition for exactly that. I am sick and tired of certain people misinterpreting the meaning of the word "Rock and Roll."

Happy Birthday! Back to the Rock Hall. I think Lenny Kravitz deserves to be in the Rock Hall. He had a lot of great singles in the 1990's. And I pose this question, Who's Greatest Hits album is better, Lenny Kravitz's or Peter Frampton's? Peter Frampton's solo career rides quite heavily on one live album.

Frampton should be inducted as a member of Humble Pie who in turn should have been in long before Kravitz.

Until Cliff Richard and also The Shadows are invited, I want nothing to do with them. Even though they're unknown in the States, they were among the most important artists in the history of rock and roll, as they inspired almost every great UK band and lead guitarist in history. People and shouting out that their heavy metal or grunge or alt-rock bands should be in it, when Cliff and the Shadows should have been inducted back with The Beatles, Beach Boys, etc. They started out in 1958 and Cliff has outsold everyone overseas other than The Beatles and Elvis.

There are some prog rock bands in the RRHOF like YES, GENESIS, MOODY BLUES, just to name a few. However, not to include ELP is a travesty. But first MUST include old acts like King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Supertramp, Billy Idol, Ozzy, Sparks.....etc., etc. We need an URGENT EMERGENCY BATCH INDUCTION FOR ALL THOSE ARTIST THAT MUST BE THERE, LATER WE CAN INCLIDE KOOL N THE GANG, SADE, JJCOOL COOLJJ , OR WHATEVER THEY ARE NO PROBLEM, THEY ARE WELCOME, better together than separeted in differen Hall of Fames. I suspect that the RS shit is behind these nonsence.

Of all of these, Mariah Carey had the biggest, most successful career. She's not rock, as you say, but neither are a lot of others in the Rock Hall today. I'll break it down, why Mariah deserves to be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: - Co-wrote, co-produced, co-arranged all of her original songs - 19 #1 Billboard Hot 100 hits (Only The Beatles have more, with 20) - 6 #1 Top 200 Billboard albums - 221.5 million albums worldwide (Mostly from physical sales) - Great songwriter and vocalist. Very funny personality - Innovative remixes and pop/ rap combination songs. - Mariah was basically the "Taylor Swift" of her day (That's a fair comparison)

No, it's not or your idea of what is music is extremely limited. The music hall of fame would have orchestral music or opera, Asian or African traditional music, French chanson, and whatnot. There is just western popular music (mainly restricted to English language) in the Hall of Fame. And including all music into one Hall of Fame would lead to even more debate, should we first include Enrico Caruso or Ozzy Osbourne? Édith Piaf or Mariah Carey? And who would want to see that?
