Eh, I truly feel sorry for those viewers who can't watch the Russian version. In the English version, the charm, allure and originality of the sound of the two main characters are lost. Two of the greatest Russian actors, dramatic and musical genre. Without their live, real voices, the vocal parts in English sound banal, boring and kill the whole acting. Alas🤷‍♂️

Is the English one dubbed or reshot? Might be a dumb question but I've always found it hard to tell and haven't found any info on it. I also enjoy listening to the Russian version but I wish there were english subtitles

I believe it was shot first, lip synced (or dubbed later), then the Romanian version, then the Russian one with film and studio time leftovers - still we love the Russian one best )

My daughter and I love this movie! Any chance they can remaster it to 4K Widescreen Quality? It should be re-released in movie theaters around the world! It's a beautiful movie for all ages!

I have been looking into creating a fan edit remaster. I have a suspicion NRK has already remastered this version. Interesting note is that this movie was made in 3 languages. English, Russian, and Romanian (different takes). The non-english versions are actually in widescreen, but the English widescreen version was unfortunately lost. Something else I found interesting after watching all three is that the non-english versions include some cut scenes which can change the perspective of the story. In the non-english versions the wolf is actually more justified in his anger because there are scenes that show the kids purposefully disturbing and annoying the wolf. A remasted could potentially use the lost information from the other versions. Maybe i will one day write up all the interesting information i have found. Just a very small potential audience unfortunately

AI does wonders these days and it may help in the process too! My daughter is 15 years old now and she just happened to bring up the movie. I sent her this link to watch it again in a higher quality. @@jesperhustad I got a 4K ultra widescreen version if you want to give it a go. Upscaled from a HD version I found. Since every scene was filmed 3 times with the different languages, it's hard to re-cut it with the english soundtrack :/

@@Zymosisproductions cool. So my suspicions where right that the NRK version is already up scaled. Yeah re-cutting with different takes doesn’t really work. I was thinking training AI on the three versions and then filling to make it widescreen. Only issue is that current AI struggles with making good results for multiple connected frames. No matter what solution you end up with it would be a lot of work. So I think waiting until the tech becomes better is the best move for now.

It's honestly a shame that the best English version in wide circulation that we have is a very obvious and crudely done Telecine transfer of a widescreen film format to 4:3 video format, by just straight up cropping off the left and right sides of the frame. This needs a new scan from the original film (or any film print that preserves the original aspect ratio); as I see it, there is no point in trying to "remaster" this bad 4:3 crop.

As far as i know this is the only English version of the film available. I have been in contact with the company behind the movie, Mosfilm, about any other widescreen version. Have not heard back. Luckily we have the two other retakes in different languages at least.

The version from NRK is shorter then then original one, they have deleted a whole section, i have the original russian/romanian version, and its longer, and different, but my problem is that im not russian or romanian, so the audio is wrong for me, im trying to get an english version thats the right one, so i can remux the audio, and the high quality i have the video in, so it works ... but right now it looks dark ..

Every version of the 3 languages are complete retakes. English version has higher budget and is therefore superior in both music and camera shots. For example compare the audio in the donkey climbing ladder singing scene (English version has much better audio mixing) Or compare the amount of camera angles and close ups in the wolfs planning their strategy scene. Non-English version is mostly just one wide shot while English version has close ups that capture the acting much better. In general the idea was to film the English version as a western style film while the other versions could be closer to a play. They also knew the biggest potential profit was potentially from the English version. As from what I have heard the NRK is the highest quality English version. There is one German TV channel version but it’s also 4:3 and lower quality.

@@jesperhustad: I’ve found a Russian version that has the best quality I’ve seen of this movie, even better then the NRK one, but it’s in Russian, and since I’m Norwegian, it’s kinda hard to understand it, but the movie is great, but the order the movie is in, is different. Got a mail from NRK about this yesterday, and they confirmed it was different, but they didn’t have much info, since it was a bought production.

@@trdahl07 I don't know if you saw my reply, but that's exactly what I was discussing. I have the three versions on my computer and have read all the information I could find about it online. The three languages are complete retakes. That mean that they filmed it again for every languages. So there will always be differences if you just dub versions.

The full widescreen english version has been lost. This NRK TV re-broadcast sent at a 4:3 aspect ratio is the only one that exists.

Ах и да, кстати. Если ты настолько слепая, что не заметила, то в этой версии вырезано намного больше) Вот это да! Представляешь! Русские целых два момента вырезали, которые есть в двух остальных версиях! Вот это да! И пусть в русской версии, козлята не отмахиваются от комаров прогоняя троицу, и пусть в русской версии главные персонажи разговаривают своими голосами, и пусть в русской версии есть танец, которого нету в двух других, и пусть концовка от других отличается. Лучше же смотреть версию где всё поперепутано)
