23:32 Bang on. People hype up The Warning’s live performances over their studio tracks for several reasons, but a big one is that they so obviously love what they’re doing, and that love really is infectious. When you watch the HYCAD concert video and see Pau’s huge smile while she’s smashing her drums into submission, you just can’t help but smile back.

There is a bit in a interview for Billboard where Kobato explains "Po" By the way, do you know why Kobato ends her sentences with “po”? [Translator’s note: Kobato has a signature way of speaking in Japanese, ending sentences with “po,” an onomatopoeia expressing the call of a pigeon. The kanji for Kobato is “little pigeon.”] SAIKI (Lead vocals): Tell them why you say “po.” Tell them who you really are. Kobato: I’m Kobato, meaning I have a little bit of pigeon in me, po. That’s why I end sentences with “po,” which is the sound a pigeon makes, po. Daniela: So it’s pigeonese. [Everyone laughs] I caught that just now. “Narimashita, po.”

I have to give them credit for their restraint, balancing giving each aspect of each band a flash of spotlight, avoiding overindulgence, ultimately leaving you wanting More🤘🏻 This song could’ve easily been 5 minutes plus, but they kept disciplined & balanced. I’m betting WHEN The Warning & Band Maid play this live, they’ll give the instrumental back & forths/battle a few minutes more to dazzle. This is my first exposure to Band Maid, the guitarist & bass player really pop, enough for me to investigate further 🔎

That’s a very good description and sums up how I feel about the song….restraint while highlighting aspects instead of trying to cram everything in. If you want to check out more of Band-Maid and enjoyed the bass and guitar, I’d suggest starting with Manners, Dice, or Hate? live from their channel. Like TW they truly shine during live performances.
@_DriveTime

I wouldn't be surprised by an extended solo section. It's pretty common for Band-Maid to add those live. "Hate?", "Domination", and "Don't You Tell Me" official live videos are some examples. The live debut in Japan was played pretty much like the studio track, but if they do a show in Mexico together an extended solo section seems very possible.

I saw a different reactor channel where the guy literally wrote down the word 'restraint' in his notes while the song played--for just that reason. They kept the back and forth just right for a perfect radio friendly length rock song.

There is no better, yes. But there are good and bad. And those two bands are in the good bin. No doubt. Actually, even if you are super duper skilled, you might not be better than one that is not. Not all good music is based on super duper skills. BAND-MAID is much more skilled and complex. The Warning is totally fantastic as a rock power trio. Different things, and also different tastes.

I really love how you respected both bands and their individual sound! I have seen fans of The Warning trying to only talk about them and making them shine over the Maids and I have seen the opposite where the Madiacs talked only about the maids while completely disregarding TW. Both fandoms need to realize that both bands are incredibly talented and is quite literally the future of rock music! I really love people like you who respected both sides and complimented each member for what they did and how they sound! ♥

I think, of course, the fans of one band or the other know their idols better and talk more about them. However (with very, very rare exceptions) they all don't talk the other band down. They even call people out, who were talking disrespectively of the other band. There is also a good number, who knew and liked both bands before already. So, this is going on way more friendly and polite in the comment section than I was expecting. Esp. as I know the rivalry towards other fangroups.

It's funny that you mentioned about Rock becoming so serious at one point. In a recent interview discussing their new album Keep Me Fed, Pau actually said what you said almost verbatim. She said that she thinks that Rock takes itself too seriously sometimes, and they just wanted the new compositions to be fun.
@mt4design2
@mt4design2 Ай бұрын
Phil, I wish I could thumb up your reaction x1000. You understand collaboration and how this composition managed to allow each band to have the space to focus and showcase their sounds as individual bands but somehow kill it playing together. It is a genius level collaboration. You NAILED it on the switch up in lead vocals. Also, if listen closely you can even pick out the different sounds of Dany and Kanami's lead guitar parts, Ale and Misa's bass guitars, and even Pau and Akane's drums. Then you have Miku's guitar playing rhythm which has it's own sound and her vocals as well. There are moments where I think Pau and Ale are singing harmony with Dany but its only because I can't detect any accents in those parts.

"I loved this because just that little fill that they were each playing, it still sounded true to their individual sounds. So Misa, Kanami, and Akane's parts sounded more Band-Maid, like it was a bit more shreddy, and then Danny, Ale and Pau's parts sounded more Warning, like it sounded a bit more melodic. So this isn't to say that one style is better than the other, but this just shows how cool different styles can sound together. And this also a prime example of how differences in bands and genres and sub-genres should be celebrated instead of trying to rank which one is better. Music is an art, and it's not a science. There is no "better". And as we can see....contrast is a good thing." Well said, Phil Zero.

What the video (and many reactors) missed is actually during the duel interlude between TW vs BM, in every TW's turn, Pau's playing was very different with Akane. Pau was playing with the toms (no hihat), a style she used in a lot of TW songs, while Akane was playing the usual funk to accompany Misa slapping the bass. In the cellphone recordings of Tokyo Special Show (I don't think you can find it in YT due to copyright strike, but you can find it on FB) we can see clearer the differences of Pau vs Akane drumming, including the back and forth of the fill ins. I was there watching them live but with all the auditory overload of two powerful bands collabing (my ears were ringing for 2 days) I couldn't catch all the details until the phone recording was released. It was a memorable show, like watching Avengers live in front of your eyes. Musical Goddesses descended to earth❤

You called it about their individual styles. The Warning are known for power vocals with a driving power rock sound. Band-Maid are known for their technical playing and non conformity to a specific genre (they'll try anything). To my ears, the vocals and rhythm are more TW based where all the little extras behind the vocals are B-M based. That's why Ale, Dany & Pau solo's are more in tune with their power rock sound and MISA, Kanami & Akane play what they are known for, anything. I really enjoyed your analysis and reaction. Thanks.

Cluppo is the Japanese sound that a pigeon makes (like the way you say a dog goes arf, or a cow goes moo). Po is like a truncated version of it. It’s not that she calls people that. She’s just making a pigeon sound, because she identifies as a pigeon. Kobato means small pigeon. She also makes various pigeon related puns. Like the word for pigeon is hato, and 8 is hachi, and one way you can pronounce ten is tō, so she says she’s 810 years old, and there are more number puns on her signature guitar, The Flappy Pigeon. It’s insane, but that’s part of the charm of her and the band.

Oh, just some FYI on some Band-Maid information and terms since you are new to Maids and sounds like you're going to listen more. For Maid theme: Miku, the band founder, used to work in a Japan Maid Cafe to make ends meet until she made her dreams come true. Her vision, create "the gap", a juxtaposition between cute Maids and hard rocking Music. "Masters and Princesses" - this is what the Maids call their fans. "Okyu-ji" - Translates to "Servings", which is what they call their live concerts. "Omajinai Time" - Translate to "Magic Spell Time", during this time a spell is cast at by Maids and their Masters and Princess at Maid Cafes. Miku leads Omajinai time during one of the MC breaks at their Okyu-jis. It's so much fun, especially if the other Maids troll her. But, being the quick witted Pigeon she is, she rolls with it, which often leads to quite entertaining outcomes. "Maid Armor" or "Maid Battle Armor" - the Maid outfits they wear. Although they started with same/similar outfits, they have evolved over time to fit the personalities of each Maid. Other FYI: Kobato is the family name of Miku, the second lead vocal, backing vocal, rhythm guitar, main lyricist and band founder. Her Kanji 小鳩 (Kobato) translate to "small pigeon". "Hato" (鳩) which is what translate to pigeon/dove, can also be conceived as 8-10. So she has taken on the persona of a 810 yr old small pigeon. Thus Miku often ends most of her sentences with "PO!" "PO!" - Onomatopoeia associated to the sound a pigeon makes in Japan is "Kuruppo" or "Poppo". "PO!" being the shortened version.

Songs like Uto, Running in circles, .intoodeep. or .CoDa. are insanely good and refreshing. Maybe put them on the react list after the TW concert if you like them. Hope you read this!

You should listen to VOB "voice of baceprot". Three girls from Indonesia, very cool believe me.

Saiki is pronounced "Sigh" and "Key". Didn't see anyone else post it, so just trying to help. And I think replying "MISA MISA MISA!!!" to the comment "MISA MISA MISA!!!" Is a perfectly acceptable response. Just remember anytime you type MISA, you use all caps. Po.

Out of all the reactor channels doing TW, this one makes me feel like I actually learned something about music. Just for a laugh, you should react to 'Smells Like Nirvana' by Weird Al Yankovic (or at least break it down if you've heard it already). If you like the original song, I think that you would be amazed and amused.

I know that you might want to move on from The Warning and pay attention to other bands, but I have to recommend one last song. Their song “Ugh” live at Teatro Metropolitan CMDX was SUCH a good song. I think it’s my favorite Warning song, and it could come close to yours if you check it out. It has so many cool little details and aspects that make you need to bop your head along with the beat.

This song is growing on me. I feel like the vocals are wayyyy to forward in the mix. It's starting to ear worm for me, so I must like it more every time I hear it. As always, thanks again Phil for your thoughts and analysis!

Watch their collaboration with Alessia Cara for Metallica's Black List album. One of the few songs I really have to decide if I prefer the original and their version.

So...two leads singing each in their second language. It's clear Dany is more comfortable in English, no surprise as they live in English in their music. Is Sieko singing phonetically?

There is no better in music, but there is definitely worse. One can not miss the difference between the two stellar bands and most of the music on the radio.

I thought the collab was solid but I felt like Dany's vocals were subdued intentionally for whatever reason. That is really my only, less then stellar critique. It would have been really sick if the solos were a bit longer.

@@williammoye6997 I don't think it was subdued. Both singers were singing in a key higher than normal for them. When singing that high there isn't the room for Dany's normal belts and gravel that she adds.
