As one who earned his geology degree in the 1970s, including Field Camp with the U of Montana in Dillon, it appears that field geologists are increasingly becoming "zirconologists". And that's not a bad thing. Dr Arthur Merschat of the USGS, a distinguished graduate of Appalachian State University's outstanding undergraduate geology program, recently said of "zirconology": It doesn't make the process of sorting out the geology of the crystalline Southern Appalachians easy, but it does go a long way towards making it possible.
