My father bought me a beautiful Cort acoustic guitar when I was 16. I'm now 24 and there's barely a scratch on it, I've written countless songs with it and playing it has brought me great joy. Purposely destroying an instrument is a sin.

This song made me cry remembering all my band mates musicians who could not afford even new strings, heads or instruments other then what they could save for.. MY mom would save her $$ in the 50's to help our band get uniforms supplies etc.. It's just wrong to destroy a beautiful instrument.. when so many have to work so hard to be able to create..

I’ve since learned John Hiatt is a master songwriter and deserves a place among the greats. The message of this song spoke so powerfully to me then and does now even more so - like many of you, this song hits me in the core of my soul and I treat my guitars with only the most reverent, pampering love. 🎸💛

I had the joy of watching John Hiatt sing this song as the opening tune at the Bob Seger concert at the Palace of Auburn Hills back in the early 90s. Since this time I have been a huge fan of him and his music. What a GREAT SONGWRITER! His voice is what I would call very incredible. Not a beautiful voice like many of the other famous singers - BUT a voice which REALLY CONVEYS honest emotions in its roughness. Great post to share on Facebook with my friends!

Saw John open for Robert Cray at Radio City Music Hall in NYC in 1988, when he was still sitting down to perform, because of his stage fright! Cray was good but I went to see Hiatt. Have seen him several times since because I now live in Nashville, as does John. I’ve met him too, and he is one of the nicest, most sincere people you could ever meet, as is his wife. He has done a fund raiser for an adolescent alcohol and drug treatment center every year for at least the past ten years, if that tells you what kind of guy he is. His shows are always high energy and rockin’. Go to see him if you get a chance. You won’t be disappointed.

Fantastic job on this video! John is an outstanding songwriter/musician/lyricist/singer/artist and I agree with him totally in this song, which BTW is excellent. To smash instruments is nothing but wretched excess & symptomatic of someone having serious psychological problems, possibly due to substance abuse. I saw The Who do this live, and look what became of Keith M, fantastic drummer, and John E, great bass guitarist. Sad they didn't seek help and recover, as John did and I am so glad he did!

LYRICS: There's colors on the street Red, white and blue People shufflin' their feet People sleepin' in their shoes But there's a warnin' sign on the road ahead There's a lot of people sayin' we'd be better off dead Don't feel like Satan, but I am to them So I try to forget it, any way I can. Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world. I see a woman in the night With a baby in her hand Under an old street light Near a garbage can Now she puts the kid away, and she's gone to get a hit She hates her life, and what she's done to it There's one more kid that will never go to school Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool. Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world. We got a thousand points of light For the homeless man We got a kinder, gentler, Machine gun hand We got department stores and toilet paper Got styrofoam boxes for the ozone layer Got a man of the people, says keep hope alive Got fuel to burn, got roads to drive. Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world.

Saw Townsend smash a numbered black Les Paul in Greensboro... He was swinging it like an axe and he really hitting the guitar hard... He hit it hard three licks then checked to see if it would play and was still pretty close to being in tune... It seem he was exhausted by the time he to the long neck tenon to separate from the body... I bet he substituted a many a bolt neck LP copies just because they were easier to smash!!!!!! I never liked to see anyone smash a guitar at a concert after playing it... And I was a college football player prone to some angry emotions and football sanctioned me to release this behavior on the field... But smashing a guitar pretty much just made me feel hollow inside....

This song really resonates with me in a profound way. I had a beautiful Taylor acoustic that was handed down to me from my late mom and I would play that thing until my fingers hurt. Flash forward a few years later and I was livng with m girlfriend at the time in a one bedroom apt. One night as I was playing my Taylor, she really let me have it saying that I spent more time with the guitar than I did with her. After about 15 minutes of argument and grating me down to a seething ball of frustration and rage, I did something unspeakable and heartbreaking. I smashed my favorite guitar to pieces right in front of her. As I held the broken peices of that Taylor in my hand, it dawned on me what I had done. I vowed that if any woman ever tried to get me to stop playing music ever again, that I would end that relationship immediately. Your guitar becomes a piece of you, like a child. It is a thing of pure beauty and innocence. That memory will haunt me forever. I definitely want to get another Taylor acoustic at some point, and when I do, I'm treating that thing like it's a baby with glass bones.

Somebody worked hard to make your guitar. You smashing it wastes the materials and love they put into making it.

The ones they smash aren't handmade, but most likely some Chinese knock-off, made by 10 year olds in a sweathop.
