Rocket Knight Adventures is one of the best platformers on the Genesis - right up there with Sonic - and it doesn't get anywhere near the props it deserves. If you're in the mood for a classic Konami platformer, RKA and its sequels are well worth a look!

I've been playing this game recently on an emulator and i was blown away by how fun and addictive it is. It's also a very nice looking game, with a really amazing soundtrack and it also has some nice Gradius references (like that level 5 miniboss, which is a mix of both Big Core and Tetran) But it's also a very brutal game, despite looking like a kid's game (it may look like it's very easy, but it's far from it... especially if you play it on Normal, like i did. Let alone Hard Mode, where you start with no lives, NO CONTINUES AND YOU DIE IN ONE HIT FROM EVERYTHING!) And this absolute madman did it! You are very very stong indeed, my friend!

That's the games strengh here as you can never get to comfortable or cocky with Rocket Knight (heck it it even has a railway segment as well!) All avenues covered and more that you would expect via graphics and music that impress with it's sheet creativity if stressful nature. Not even sequel Sparkster games can kinda touch. I never got to beat that yellow consolised pc emperor either and the ending you still had to earn right to the end of the descent back home. Looking back, I think the reason why Sparkster fared better than most other attempts at mascot-platformers is that a lot of others were trying to copy the Sonic approach of having the attitude carry them, and that was only going to work once. Sonic had excellent games, yes, but it's well-known that they put a lot of effort into his personality and demeanor to win away players from Nintendo. Rocket Knight Adventures focused very little on the personality of Sparkster, not even putting his name in the title (until the sequels), and focused more on the concept. It's a knight with a jetpack. And that's awesome. Or maybe it's just because Sparkster isn't as try-hard as all the others. Or just that the game is actually worth playing. All good things.

@tiberiusthehedgehog92 Sparkster the Rocket Knight was one of many video game mascots that tried to cash in on the success of Sonic's games. Others included Accolade's Bubsy the Bobcat, Sunsoft's Aero the Acro-Bat, and Tengen's Awesome Possum. Sparkster stood out from them because he was more down-to-Earth, but because his games came out around the same time as theirs, they never evolved beyond being sleeper hits in sales.
@Bloodreign12 ай бұрын
I find this game far better than Sonic, it didn't have to rely on speed for it's appeal. Solid stage design, a good soundtrack, nice graphics using the limited color palette of the Genesis in a far better way than some other games on the console used them, and replay value that didn't rely on a ton of gimmicks (speed, chaos emeralds). The gimmicks here were simpler, the rocket pack, and having to play in the games hardest mode (Crazy Mode) to get the full ending. While the latter might seem like a slap in the face to the player, it encourages them to practice, and play better if they want that best ending (Konami pulled this stunt on the entire trilogy, as well as Castlevania Bloodlines, Gradius III SNES with it's final little message to the player if the game is played in the hidden Arcade Mode, Gradius II PCE CD if played in it's highest hidden difficulty mode, with an entirely new ending). Konami really wanted to challenge the player back then, made sure we got our money's worth. With each Sonic game, the bonus stages to get Chaos Emeralds got more and more ridiculous with each passing game, the bonus stages in the 1st game I find the best as they remind me of the game that inspired them, Taito's Cameltry. Sonic relied on 'tude, Sparkster relied on his wits and his sword to get the job done, and be humble about it.
@Bloodreign12 ай бұрын
@@FlyingDuckMan360 I'd hardly call Awesome Possum a sleeper hit, even back in the day, the game was hated, gaming mags ripping it to shreds. playing this gem at kega fusion 3.64 on normal setting, and using saves states only when I finish areas in a level. graphically looks gorgeous even with today's standards, animations and sprites are top notch too, the gameplay feels great, very tight, the music is freaking awsome, the amount of boss fights is enormous, I am battling right now the boss appearing in 32:20, and THE GAME HAD ME ALMOST BREAKING THE MONITOR out of how fucking hard is, it seems Sparkster is inside on a same robot/vehicle as Axel Gear's BUT I AM DEAD IN THREE HITS whereas Axel's won't die even in 8 hits, and I AM GETTING MAD. at some points I can say the game is UNFAIR. And this thing shows how much of "for pussies" and "holding your hand" have become the most games today in general, even indies.
@αλώβητοςκανένας4 жыл бұрын
Update: the later boss fights with Axel Gear SUCK BALLS. The game is nowhere close to the Sonic Trilogy, I think Shinobi III is much better too, and some other Genesis hidden gems, such as Decap Attack (from 1990!), I find them better too, had more fun playing through them.. Again, Rocket Knight Adventures is great, but not even close the greatest side scroller the Genesis had to offer. Because I've seen people counting this on their list as one of the very best. It's just not all about graphics and sprites. It's about motherfucking fun. Someone could call me a butthurt, but the game really becomes tedious after all these boss fights and mini boss fights, you just want some platform areas with common enemies to play against for change.
