Coming from a Varadero MK2 to the new XL750V, I almost agree at all with you at the pros and the cons of this bike . About the missing of the range gauge, i would like to have it as well. But there is a very useful gauge of the fuel that consumed. Setting the Trip A auto reset, i can have a clear view of the remaining fuel in my tank. And believe me i prefer to know that there are 5.2 liters for example than to see a 145 km of range. Of course i would prefer both of them. Riding in Greece with ambient temperature at 43 Celsius, i must admit that this bike has an excellent heat dissipation from the engine and radiator. I am 1.75 tall and i believe that the optional higher windscreen is useful since i feel a lot of wind pressure after 130 km/h. I wish safe and enjoy riding.

Thanks for your feedback. You're right: there is an option of displaying how many litres of fuel you have remaining. Re. wind protection, it's a bit of a dark art, as I said in the video, and I think everyone has to experiment to find the best solution for them. Ride safe :)

Always admire your honesty in pointing out negatives it's refreshing. I must defend the brakes though (not that you were too concerned), with a relatively small contact patch due to thin front wheel on less than super grippy tyres, if you can activate the abs with standard set up then anymore would simply overwhelm the tyres. On abs shod bikes, it's the tyres (friction patch) which dictates braking power not disc size or calipers. Thanks again for early review, and allowing me to indulge.

Interesting theory but the KTM 1290 ADV-R has the same size front wheel as the Transalp and comes with seriously good radial Brembos… They don’t overwhelm the tire.
@Grahamvfr Жыл бұрын
@@timothydubber549 Well they won't overwhelm the tyre, because the abs will kick in, but that's my point, if the standard system can activate the abs, then it's powerful enough. However the ktm is a bit more serious than transalp, so probably warrants classier gear. 👍
@williamb.6918 Жыл бұрын
The Tuareg has VERY strong Brembos up front, fairly grippy pads, the same 90/90-21 front, and less power than the Transalp. I have not found that to be an issue on or off road. Honda often does this for bikes they expect newer riders to flock to and I almost immediately end up replacing the pads with something that has a bit more metal.

You can buy right angle adaptors for your valve stems and just reset your trip meter when your fill the fuel tank. That's what riders have done for decades and still useful. It appears that Honda have cut some corners to keep the price down. In reality most people considering a Transalp either cannot afford an Africa Twin or want such a big, heavy bike and will buy another brand that is close in specification or price. I was keen on try a Transalp but without tubeless tyres, cruise control I immediately lost interest. When you factor in the need to spend significant money on handguards, bash plate, crash bars, centre stand, heated grips then the price (remarkably cheap) is not the incredible value you first thought. No doubt Honda will sell plenty of them but it is not the dirt weapon we were hoping for.

All the other stuff just seems like fluff to me, but then it would be a dull world if we were all the same. Glad you enjoy the bike overall. Cheers.

I'm with you on all those 'extras' - I never had them before either, and would actually be happier if the Transalp (I'm hoping to be able to pick mine up soon) had none of the 'stuff' you mention. I'm good at chnging gear too... The centrestand is an optional extra, available either from Honda or SWM Motech, like the bashplate. At least we get the choice of brand of add-ons. Yes, they come on the Suzuki - bashplate and handguards - but if you wanted metal ones you only have to duplicae the parts it comes with. So these parts being optional makes sense in that respect. If your use doesn't require those parts, you don't have to pay for them on the bike.

Nice summary RocketMan, thanks! I took a demo bike out for a 2 hour test ride two days ago on a real mixture of rural and urban roads, wet and dry, and even a farm track. Handling was superb in all conditions, but it was vital to turn off the traction control for gravel and off road. Unfortunately it appears this must be reset in USER mode every time the ignition is turned off. That is my only gripe, so I bought one. I loved how light it felt and how easy it was to push around when off the bike. Like you, I am happy to add my own accessories to suit my personal tastes. Thing with that is, it's not a common solution, which means it adds to the cost, since it's not standard Honda catalogue, with extra assembly time. I’ve had mine for a few weeks now based in Berlin in Germany. I disagree with some of the pros and cons from Rocketman. I think the seat is hard and somewhat unforgiving after a couple of hours. Fuel range is not a problem. I’ve never had a bike that had a fuel gauge that I could 100% rely on. Needless to say, when it gets to the bottom bar - fill up! It says in the manual that the light will come on when there’s about 3.5 litres left, which should give you about 60 to 70km to find a pump. I’m 1.70m tall and I can ride with my visor fully up with no real wind at any speed. I did. get the taller screen but no deflectors (which look cheap and nasty). 90hp is fine and expected from a 750. If rocketman wants 39hp more, then he should have spent twice as much and bought the Africa Twin - simple! The light is pathetic at night. I’m not sure what to do about that yet as tapping into the light system with a couple of searchlights will melt the cables. For me, the biggest tick in the box that rocketman didn’t mention is value for money.

Having owned an Africa twin, then the T7 before this, after fitting a slip on alone, the bike came alive in 6th. So much so, I had to keep checking I was not in 5th.when cruising at 120 to 150kph. It has more perceivable power than the last 2 bikes mentioned at any given speed. Quick bursts to 190 are a breeze. I had such a nice time cycling the Algarve in Jan. Lagos wasn't my thing, but that got me out and exploring on a rented bicycle. But the coastal roads made for brutal pedaling, and I'd have loved a motorcycle to change things up. I see I passed within a block of Honda in Portimao. Had I known I'd have stopped in for a look around. TA looks interesting and I want to throw a leg over one when it finally gets to the US, since I'm 6'3" and I'm folded a bit tightly on the now-lower-than-before NC750x. But I carry groceries more than I ride gravel, and TA is still not here, so NC750x it is. You'd hate that bike's 58hp, but I have to say, as a returning geezer rider who's pretty sedate, the smooth engine and DCT shifting make it a pleasure to ride. I'm ruined now. I don't miss a clutch lever one bit. I get about 75mpg on that thing as well. Your engine noise vid did sound a bit like my snowblower. Its interesting to hear another owners opinion, so thanks for that. I've had mine a month now and covered about 500 miles. Some points of my own. Tyre noise: I can't say I've noticed this but then I rarely do long high speed trips. Fuel baffle: I agree its annoying. I've had similar devices on my SV650's and someone pointed out that it was to stop you filling the tank completely. The reason for this is to leave an air pocket so that in the event of an accident where the tank gets crushed it stops itf rom bursting. Rough engine: The engine is certainly not as smooth as my SV650 and feels a little agricultural at low revs. I'm not convinced that these 270 degree cranks do a good job of simulating a V-twin. Performance: I'm more than happy with this, coming from a VFR800 VTEC I was expecting less thrust but actually the power to weight ratio is very similar. Brakes: The back is surprisingly good, I've no issues with the front either, initial bite is great and effective. Dash: I agree some of the options available are useless. I too would like a range option. The dash visibility works well in bright daylight. Seat: I'm find that an issue, its hard compared to my VFR and it slopes forward. Footpegs: They're in the wrong place, I'm constantly whacking my calves and shins on them. Wind: The standard screen works for me and the optional deflectors improved things further. Did I make the right choice. I think so. It's a fun and entertaining bike to ride. Slow speed manuoverabilty is excellent as though it's a tall bike most of the weight is low down. Fuel consumption is excellent, I'm getting similar to you. The only extras I've added since collection is a phone holder for navigation and a TUTORO chain oiler. Did you know there's a rubber strap on the underside of the seat to hold your documents? Have you tried pairing the bike to the Honda Roadsync app, it's very disapointing.

I just tested the V-Strom 800 today, the only things I can fault really are the price and some buzziness through the pegs and grips...even more vibration than my Royal Enfield Himalayan! Otherwise though I found you can get to the speed limit effortlessly with the torquey engine, the bike is pretty nimble despite the 21" front wheel, brakes are very sharp, suspension is very composed and plush, seat is comfortable, standing position is good, the bike doesn't feel its 230kg (barely feels heavier than my Himalayan) and the quick shifter is the best I've used by far. Suzuki really seems to have focused on making a bike that's great to ride rather than worrying about the specs sheet, props to them! Balanced, thoughtful review. I will be considering the Transalp for my next bike, had two of the previous, 650, models. Regarding fuel range display I have to disagree as to it's usefulness. The predicted range is based on the way it is ridden over a fairly short period, maybe the last 60 seconds or less, so it has the potential to show an unrealistic range. I find knowing the range you get from different riding styles is a better way to schedule fuel stops.

I too was disappointed to find no Range readout and also air Temperature is missing. I have used both a lot when riding 365. In England it is useful to know the temp when it gets very cold. My DL650 had a light that came on below 3 deg centigrade. The tyre noise that you mentioned often disappears when the tyres have been run-in. Also I have found that brakes can be far better after an initial period of use. I usually keep a bike for 2 years or 5000 miles before deciding whether it is a long termer. I think the lights don't show up enough, I have ridden with the full beam on and nobody has flashed me. I find the throttle a bit jerky at low revs sometimes too.

Great video as usual mate. Now I do not want to come across negatively. As I change my bikes as often as you do. And the Transalp has sparked my interest. However, after watching many of your recent videos I feel like the ultimate bike for you would be a KTM 1090. The non R model. It looks like you mainly ride road and possibly a bit of smooth gravel. With 125hp, a 19" front wheel. Admittedly the buttons on the handlebars are typical KTM and seem a little cheap. However they work, the placement is great. The whole bike just works. Has a great sound. I would say a good spread of power and torque. And if you fit a 90/10 tyre like a 'Tourance Next' they perform really well on road and smooth gravel roads. And if you are worried about reliability a friend of mine has a 1290 SAR. He has done 250,000 kms on the original engine. The engine has failed now. However, in that time it only ever had basic servicing carried out. It never had the heads off or anything major. I'm between 5'8" and 5'9" and I seem to manage the 1090 no worries. Its alot more manageable than my old 1190R. That was a tall bike. Anyway mate, just a bit of food for thought. I'm sure you will get a lot of enjoyment out of the Transalp the more you ride it. Cheers

The reality is that I get around 120 miles before reserve on the FTR and around 140 miles on the Mandello, so a simple countdown is all that I need or want. On the subject of Honda, as a motorcycle trainer, I'm often asked about what would be a good first bike. Whenever the subject of Honda crops up, I tell them that it's the Ronseal of motorcycling. I really like the toggle switch on the Hornet when I had a test ride, and ordered it , still waiting,-and the switches, to me, seemed to be good quality. I would love to know what the point of the grip angle is, anyone?... A 20L tank would have been better, I got used to this on my DL650. The dash, for me, is way better than the one on my 2016 Africa Twin which I could hardly read on a sunny day. My AT suffered from terrible wind turbulence over 50mph. I went higher which made it worse. Then I tried wider by copying Hondas deflectors and cutting them out of thick card, then covering with waterproof gorilla tape. They were positioned about where Honda fitted theirs. Absolute game changer, worked a treat. So, size does matter when it comes to the screen, but wider not higher. Don't have a problem with the screen and deflectors on my "Great White" XL750 at all, probably cos the wind is directed to the sides! I picked mine up yesterday and immediately fitted lower adjustable footpegs which I had on my AT (made by MFW in Germany) and mirror extenders (I have long legs and am 6' 1"), then adjusting all the controls where I want them I was very keen to get out on the road, unfortunately I was too tired by then so decided to go out today. Oh dear, raining and windy today and possibly for quite a while...doh! So, I just go in the garage and sit on it and tinker a bit...sad innit? It is the best bike I have ever had, but my wife says I always say that, give it a few weeks. No dear, it honestly is... 🤔

A bit long winded but... "The 2018 Fireblade is the first inline four-cylinder engine from Honda to use Throttle by Wire (TBW) control. Derived and developed from the system used by the RC213V-S, its job is to put precise throttle control - and a very natural feel - in the rider’s right hand. Heart of the system is a newly developed throttle grip Acceleration Position Sensor (APS) integrated into the right handlebar switchgear, which itself neatly mounts the engine start/stop switch - nothing more. APS converts movement of the grip into an electrical signal sent to the ECU, that then transmits it as an actuator signal to the TBW motor, achieving ideal throttle control relative to grip angle. The return spring and other mechanisms inside the APS faithfully reproduce the initial play and feel of a cable, with throttle load set specifically for the Fireblade."

The power is perfect. The suzuki feels more poweful because the gears interval is smaller, but that means that the honda at 120km/h is at 4400 rpm and the suzuki is at 5500rpm, so fuel economy on honda is unmatched. If you want more power and better brakes….buy a more expensive bike, because at the price range this honda is again….unmatched. No fuel range on the gauge????? When it gets to reserve the bike starts couting the amount of fuel you spend cl by cl and the amout of kms you have done since, much better then the fuel range on other bikes that is constantly changing up and down. I have had 24 motorcycles during my life from R1 to CBR, Tracer 9, MT07, MT09, Vstrom etc and i can tell that this is the best allaround bike i owned. Sorry about the spelling….i am portuguese.

Thanks RM for another informative real-world analysis of this model, which we are still waiting for here in South Australia. It was "definitely" meant to be here a couple of weeks ago, but then "no stock"! From here it has looked like a poorly organised release of what is shaping up as a popular model. (Perhaps it has been organised by the Honda GP racing team)! In my case it will be doing the mixed-use tasks my old '95 Elefant 750 has been doing for many years, on the multitde of dirt roads in this area, and I expect it will have little difficulty in exceeding that bike in many areas (in spite of the extensive improvements to my old Elefant) but not all. The cluttered situation under the engine of the Honda, and its impact on ground clearance, is my biggest concern, as it looks difficult to resolve, and limits the bike's versatility off the bitumen. Likewise the lack of any frame to mount a bashplate on - an area the Elefant has a much better solution to, for the bashplate, all of which came stadard on that bike. Also I was surprised at the absence of an ambient temperature reading, when so much other less relevant information is displayed. Grip angle? Oh please... The angled valve stems have long been equipment on tubeless wheels, but not (yet?) on tubes. Tubeless not always better than tubed, depending on the degree of damage from a puncture, but that's a long topic on its own. But your candour and 'smooth delivery' of your views are very easy to listen to. Keep them coming. The views of those who have actually purchased the bike more valuable than the views of a 'vlogger' who needs to be loaned bikes, and may be 'careful' about criticising. Thank you. All your insights prepare me for when I finally get to ride the bike they have been telling me was just two weeks away since April...

Too high in the saddle (I'm 177 cm) and more offroad biased than I really need. Particularly the Aprilia's seat, although I did enjoy the 660. @@alanbarnes2920 A VERY late response to this reply, now 16,000 kms 'in' on my Transalp, and really liking it. The T7? A lot dearer here (Australia) and too tall in the saddle. The T7 undoubtedly better-equipped for off-road, but top heavy, less power, less fuel range, etc. I am getting 400 kms from a full tank. The Honda may not be for everyone, but as an 'all around bike' it is really ideal. It became smoother - both vibration and engine sound - after about 5,000 kms, and has honestly got better as I go. I have covered over 3,000 kms on the many dirt roads around here, and farther afield, and it has done fine. It could use some suspension upgrades for rougher terrain, but at the price that is arguably 'affordable'. But for dirt roads (as against tracks) it is fine. The fuel range is actually pretty good, as the economy is remarkable. I got 390 kms out of mine, without running out. The thing to know is that once the last fuel bar starts flashing, you have 3.7L left. About 80 kms, or 50 miles. Quite a decent margin to find some fuel. Quite handy on my recent trip, when a town I assumed would have fuel did not. It would go past 400 kms if you were just travelling (without doing 200 kmh) but I would want a couple of litres in a container to do that test! Having owned the bike for over 5,000 kms now, some of these 'anticipated fears' have proven laughably baseless. It is not a perfect bike - no such thing - but it is better than some of these early concerns suggest. And it gets smoother as you go, and the engine noises DO quieten down. I'm enjoying it. A lot of bike for the $$.

I always reset my A trip odometer to judge my tank distance. Never did trust what my bike tells me.

True, they're not very accurate, but better than nothing. I'm hoping a new software update will give us the Range option.

As you love torque and hate engine vibrations, will you be getting an electric bike anytime soon?

If the government incentives on electric vehicles in Portugal were more generous, I’d definitely be interested

Thanks another great review, as I’m in the market for an adventure bike , as I would like to explore many dirt roads. Hence a question, is it adequate on a dirt road?
@RocketMan_Moto Жыл бұрын
I'm very happy with it as a road bike and have tried it off road a bit. It'll do the job, but I'd probably look to the Tuareg or Tenere if my main aim was dirt riding

All bikes have good things and bad things. The difference is whether we can handle the bad ones well. The glass deflector that is presented at minute 13:42 what distance, in cm, is between the screw holes? I was thinking of adapting to my NC.... 😁
@RocketMan_Moto Жыл бұрын
It’s stuck on. No screw holes.

I've just realised you were talking about the vertical deflector, sorry. I thought you meant the side deflectors - these are stuck on. It should fit the NC, because the accessory bar I fitted uses the factory holes and that was designed for the NC. The Transalp must use the same screen support brackets as the NC..

@@RocketMan_Moto Thanks for the reply and review. If so, I'm able to buy so I don't get a wind on my shoulders. Thanks.

I was very impressed with the manoeuvrability of this bike when tested it , in comparison with my v Strom 1000 XT 2018 , it felt like a moped 😅only concern if trade it , I will miss that Torque of the big V-Twin (10 kg vs 7,5 on the transalp ). That feeling of brutal pull that leaves your heart behind as you clarified similar to the Speed Twin , is very addictive and hard to get rid of (I have Akrapovic and DNA filter on it )… but nearly same performance(10hp difference although PWR is better on Transalp) , less consumption and newer technologies on the Honda … idk 🤷🏻♂️ Any suggestions RM? ❤

The new BMW 1300GS could be the perfect bike, but with a few options it’s going to be nearly 3x the price of the Transalp, which is just silly🙄

@@RocketMan_Moto totally out of my budget ! In Greece it probably will have 4 times the Transalp’s price .. what do you say ? Is it wise to sell the V Strom 1000 for the transalp or it is considered serious downgrade ? 😛
@RocketMan_Moto Жыл бұрын
Not a downgrade, but I don’t really see what you’ll be gaining. The V Strom 1000 is a great bike, just a bit ‘old’ maybe…

@@RocketMan_Moto they definitely knee capped it in regards to promoting Africa twin sakes. Still a fantastic bike. I wish I had the £10k lying around to get one

There are a lot of your personal negatives that can easily be explained. :) maybe your dealer need to watch your vids :D A lot of the riders these days are so spoiled and sometimes forget what we used to ride, f.e. 20 years ago and what the bikes were at that time. Have fun with the bike!!

True, but I have to compare the Transalp to current competition rather than bikes from 10 or 20 years ago

I have the 2009 model XL700 Transalp which I have had for 12 years for mostly road riding and there was 2 things you did not like in the new model lack of low down torque and front braking ability which I was hoping would both be better than the old XL700. So the new model may not necessarily impress me at all then? I have demoed the Africa Twin about 4 years ago and was not impressed with its brakes or low down torque either. So I wonder if V Twins have better low down torque than parallel twins? I am not in a hurry to update and may look to getting a full day hire rather than just a 1 hr test ride before deciding. Maybe looking at the Ducati 950, BMW 850 and Suzuki adventure bikes could be the way to go as well. I did demo the BMW1200GS but did not feel the crazy amount of money they ask for those and the Ducati equivalent offered an experience difference that was worth it.
@RocketMan_Moto Жыл бұрын
I like the look of the 1300GS, but as you say, it will likely be 3x the price of the Transalp, once a few options have been added, and I'm not prepared to put that kind of money into a bike. Thanks for your feedback :)
