Rockets and rocket-propelled, guided missiles are the essential component of any military arsenal. By definition, rockets are unguided and follow the laws of physics and trajectory; whereas missiles are guided, either remotely or internally. There are many different types of missiles, including anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, surface to air missiles, and fixed emplacement missiles. There are also ballistic missiles, like the Frog or the Scud, that follow a simple ballistic path from launch to target, much like the bullet from a gun. Then there are the long-range, Intercontinental ballistic missiles, which carry nuclear warheads and are the most feared of all, for obvious reasons.

The Rapier cannot shoot down Ballistic missiles, It works at a lower tier of defense. it's not like PATRIOT at all, it only designed to defend against Aircrafts. It is like-Stinger AA missile, or SA-15 "Tor" kind of weapon. The Patriot Pac-2 & 3 is known to be between the only systems that can shoot down TBM, the speed of them is greater than 5 Mach, hypersonic terminal phase speed of the missile, the Rapier will not have even 2 seconds before it sees a 4 km/sec speed of the BM.

Although I agree with you that our crumbling infrastructure should be a priority, and I'm sure Biden will tackle that very soon, I definitely disagree it should be done at the expense of the military budget. We are entering a highly uncertain era of great power struggle and competition and only an advanced and powerful military can deter belligerent China from engaging in military adventures in the Pacific. It's much cheaper to develop and deploy advanced weapon systems that prevent the war than actually waging war with inferior military.

Fun fact: The 11 inch W19 nuclear shell was adapted into a nuclear artillery shell for the US Navy's 16 inch (406 mm) main battery found on the Iowa-class of battleships, the W23. Production of the W23 began in 1956 and they were in service until 1962, with a total of 50 units being produced. Yield was 15-20 kilotons.

Meh it looked cooler and more steam punk when they did it on the older USS Mississippi in the 50s but they did put tomhawks GLICM style box launchers on which really made the question obvious of why the hell was the USN paying to keep trucking & running all that plate armor and big gun around when thousandth of the tonnage was providing 90% of the capability. A newer more efficient lighter ship with a newer air defense and just the tomhawks was way more survivable while just if not more effective and whole lot more efficient.

The Germans developed the panzerschrek after capturing bazookas in North Africa. Tunisia, February 1943 The Russians developed their own based on German and American weapons, taking the features they liked of both designs. Where is the western complacency?

@@BeKindToBirds The soviet rpg 2 is based on the panzerfaust not the panzerschrek and since panzerfaust was already under development when the North African campaign was going on its unlikely that its a copy of the US bazooka, besides the obvious differences between the two designs.

Willaim Congreve Rockets design was stolen from the rockets used by Tipu Sultan, one of warlords from India. Lord Wellington who had defeated Tipu Sultan in the third anglo mysore was, caught hold of a large cache of these rockets on which Congreve went on to research. It is sad that there was no mention of this in this elaborate (yet eurpoeanised) history of Rockets and Missiles
