Welcome to episode 03 of the 'modular composing' series where we'll try to leave making music to chance and coincidence, only to find out that randomness can be very predictable. And maybe even a bit boring.
Chance music is more like making decisions and using 'factors' that influence the direction or outcome of a composition/patch. It's more like improvising with some (or a lot of) help from the machine. Dice are important factors, but not the only ones.
Have fun! Probably.

Thanks man, .. quite the sonic experience/collage/spectrum, here. I believe that most music listeners, are pretty fussy. Not boring, yet not too abstract .. music makers have their work cut out, for them. .. :)

I find it more satisfying to use deterministic means to get generative sequences. IMHO randomization is best in small doses, not front and center.

John Cage! That is the old discussion since the 1950s: is a piece constructed by chance still music and how can it be called a work of music if the work is left to chance but still follows a structure i.e., the decision making process of the composer by choosing all the parameters. To be continued! 😁

It's an interesting discussion. I personally feel any creative or recreative use of sound is music. I guess Mr. Spcck would say: Chance music logically qualifies as music because it's classified as music, and chance is just a means. The real question is usually 'is it any good', which qualifies as a personal opinion from a consumer. And it's hard to debate personal opinions....

Brilliant, as always. Can I ask what FX you ran the 0-coast through? I've never heard it sound so good.

I used FX-AID Pro, but I often 'cheat' a bit by running the recording through Native Instruments Replika XT (VST). When you hear a panning delay with lots of diffusion, it's Replika. If you'd want to have a similar sound in eurorack, you'd have to run a panning clocked delay through a big reverb and have some mild modulation in the trail. I often say the best reverbs aren't reverbs, they're diffuse delays because sounds need to bounce off of walls to get a proper sense of dimension. Maybe I'll do another video about it and see how far I can get with eurorack modules. I guess two FX-AID's in series would do the trick. I think Replika is free and Replika XT is a few dollar/euro. But the free version can do what you hear.

@@CinematicLaboratory thank you! I have nothing against using software plug-ins. I got Replika XT in a bundle long ago, but never used it much. I'll have to give it a try.
