This Spring we have been Crushing Mid Size Blue Fin 30-80lbs on Slow Pitch Jigs in Red and White and Red and Orange Glow 200-250 Gram in the Middle of the night. We Primarily used to Sleep at night but eventually when Slow Pitch Jigging made it here to the West Coast someone tried them at night and a new nighttime bite was discovered and it’s been a lot more consistent of a bite than the day bite

Hahahaha! You guys get sharked and we get "sea lioned"! Happens all the time around the Coronado's when we're fishing yellowtail. Like you and sharks, we're used to it here. So cool you were able to catch our local favorite, the rock fish. Many different species here!

So sick🤙🏼🤙🏼would love to see Yellowtail catches using SPJ. That’s my goal this summer in La Jolla.

Nice job love me some fish tacos. Wish I could have met you guys when I was in FL. Unfortunately I was not able to get out on the water at all due to the winds of 20+ the whole time I was out there. But I stopped by the shop picked up a couple jigs and am headed out of SD on June 15th for a 1.5day! Wish me luck on some big tuna!

Cool video, glad you got to enjoy our Rockfish Fishery. I've been SPJ fishing for rockfish for the last 3 years since Benny introduced me to the technique. You need to plan a trip to the Channel Islands or San Nicholas Island when our Rockfish season starts in March, so you can target some bigger models of whitefish, vermillion rockfish (reds), Chuckleheads, Starry Eye Rockfish, Canary Rockfish, and the elusive Lingcod with SPJ. As for the Salmon Grouper those were small I've seen those get close to 20lbs. 20lb & 30lb spectra is more than enough as we're limited to 600' and can't use more than 2 hooks on our jigs for rockfish, two on top or two on bottom or one and one in US waters

When I jig fish for rockfish I like to use a long rod like my Calstar 850L which is a 15-30lb 8.5" surface iron and live bait rod and I just do exactly what the eat coast guys do when they fish for flukes using a jig. With that longer rod I can pop that jig up about 12-16 feet without even cranking the handle l and then let the jig flutter down. I just repeat that until I get bit. But what I also like to do is rig it dropper loop style and put a shrimp fly up top the jig on the bottom. Many times I will bring up 2 fish on a drop.

OK Johnny, you’re gonna need to take your show on the road to Alaska. I spend 10 weeks a year in AK and use slow pitched and regular jigged Johnny Jigs and pound the ocean species- rockfish, halibut and lingcod. Occasionally hit a few salmon as well. Would love to see you guys make the AK trip and put some of those whoppers in the boat. Love your stuff and your trips. 👍

I live in So Cal and have been slow pitching here for many years. Rockfish really bite when there is good current and they dont like a lot of action with the rod. They like small slow pitches. A lot of time they will hit just the jig just sitting there moving in the current. They dont swim of the bottom very far. So make faster jigging upwards off the bottom is not going to do any good. You're better off hitting bottom then taking a couple slow pitches and then going back down to bottom.

You guys absolutely make some of the best slow pitch jigging videos out there. You explain alot on how to do certain things you do. From the gear, making assist hooks, knots, line used, what gram jigs to use and when. Being a beginner can you make a how to video on how you cast or throw those jigs out away from the boat. I know it would take some practice. just need some info to get started the right way. Thanks. JIG ON!

Great video guys! Johnny; unfortunately, I don't have multiple rides & reels so I have to make the braid on my one spj setup work. I would think switching to a heavier weighted jig would be equivalent to switching to a lighter lb test. Is that correct?
@JohnnyJigsTV2 жыл бұрын
Yes, a heavier jig will help you stay vertical.

Heard u say you’d rather be using 30lb braid, what reel would you use for 30 and what accurate are you using for 40lb? Looks like an accurate?

I would use a power 2 or 3. Many brands have these power levels. Check our site JohnnyJigs.com and give us a ring at the shop. We will be happy to help.

But you didn’t get any lingcod as I told Johnny there’s something about the lingcod… Especially the big ones… just prefer a live bait or an octopus… been fishing out here in California slow pitch for four years and I’ve caught multiple lingcod’s however, nothing over 7 pounds and my personal best is 19 on bait
@JohnnyJigsTV Жыл бұрын
Interesting...As far as I know only one Lingcod was caught on the trip.

If you had to go with one reel for bottom fish fishing 500 to 600 ft SPJ. What’s the choice of your reel ? Accurate Boss Valiant 300 Or Shimano Ocea F 1500HG? Also what lbs test braid line would you fish that deep ? Thanks in advance.
@JohnnyJigsTV2 жыл бұрын
I would go bigger. Ocea Jigger 2000 or Accurate 500 or Daiwa 35jh

If the sharks weren't bad enough, they have to deal with sea lions too!?!? I guess the taxes really are higher in California!
