Fantastic interview. Mr. Shelton’s comments on the guitar on those old WRECKING CREW records are right on the money! It struck me all the times I have watched that movie that all those essentially Jazz guitar greats, Barney Kessel, Tedesco etc…who played on the Pop records were just playing rhythm that was blended into the “ Wall of Sound” and the like, even on Beach Boys records apart from early Carl Wilson on the early ones there are no Guitar solos. Even Glen Campbell never got to solo. When Mr. Shelton came in he was creating hooks and solos that are so memorable on the songs like Last TRAIN…VALERIE by the Monkees etc etc…He is one of the real greats.

Shelton does look exactly the same! When I first saw it I thought this was as old interview from years ago.

Louie Shelton stayed where he went when he left L.A. for 12 YEARS? Sounds like my lovely wife and I. A long time ago, we bought a condo in the San Fernando Valley, thinking, “We’ll stay for a couple of years, then we can sell it and put a down payment on a house in the town where I was born”, which is on the South side of the mountains, South of where we were in the Valley. Well, there was a HUGE earthquake early in those 12 years, and we had to stay where we were until the property values came back up. We barely broke even on that condo, but we were able to move where I wanted. It’s a small-ish town that’s actually surrounded by Los Angeles, but I was born here and it’s still nice. Anyway, back then we ended up stuck in the Valley like Mr.Shelton. But we finally got out of there, moved to the town where I was born, and we finally were able to buy a house. That was in 2000, and we’re still here. This town used to be the home of one of the biggest motion picture companies in the world, and I was born TWO BLOCKS from it! After doing 30+ years in Radio myself (and 10 in TV!) I built a recording studio when we finally got here (one of the five studios I’ve built), and still own this one! I really like it here because it’s still a small town , with a small town feel to it, but for the occasional Hollywood gig, that’s just right up the road from here. About Jim Croce, my old friend Michael and I cried when he died. Michael works for me when I can hire him. Michael and I go all the way back to High School! Jim Croce was one of Michael’s favorite artists, back in the day. I played EVERYTHING on Radio, including Croce, about 200 miles north of here, then in Santa Barbara with a brilliant guy I was lucky enough to hire at my 2nd Radio gig. Now HE’s a farmer in Canada! Mr. Shelton’s amp was my dream amp when I was a kid. Now I don’t need that Fender Super Reverb amp. Way too much power! But just right for what he was doing way back when. Mr. Shelton was quite right in using that amp! Even though it had enough LOUD to knock your house down, it had a tone that was straight from the heavens. Like butter! Last I looked, they were still making a hand-wired version of the Super Reverb, but it costs a fortune! One of the all-time great amps, though! Mr. Shelton played on LOTS of great records using one. Denny Tedesco made The Wrecking Crew movie, and did a great job of it. I’m proud to know him. After my 30+ years in Radio, I wish John Beaudin the best of luck after HIS 40 years in the Radio biz!

Jim Croce died in 1973 Rick Nelson died in 1985. Seems like his timelines a little messed up.
