Welcome to World of Rock Hounds!
Today, I was invited to go kayaking for the first time ever! We spent the day looking for agates on the Willamette. We found some other cool stuff as well!
It was a really fun experience out on the river and a great day for a rock adventure.

I had to make important edits to the video and i tried to make the edits with KZbin studios but it didn't work properly and messed up the video so I had to delete, re-edit with my software and then re-upload. :(

Great trip. In my opinion you have to cut open the rock to see what’s inside, it would drive me crazy not know what might be. Lol I got in the mail yesterday the rock I won, thank you so much. The rock is beautiful and the polish on it is amazing.

2:52 it looks like an agate is eating another agate. Setting your boots out in the sun on a hot day should cook off anything, well at least that's what I have been told. Man it's been some time since I have been out on that river. I crack it open! If you do try to get it on video!

That's what I first thought when I saw it but after she cleaned it up, it looked like a chameleon mouth getting ready to flick it's tongue out. I have plenty of boots that I just end up rotating! I'll wash them too for safe measure. And don't worry...I'll make a video out of it!

I've explored the Willamette around crystal lake park, Irish bend, and over to Montieth park in Albany. It sure can be picked clean or Algae covered in some areas when I was rock hunting. (Have you ever rock hunted the river right before Crab Tree, Oregon? It's a branch of the santiam I think? You just got out of Albany, towards Lebanon, the back way, then you'll see a sign turn for Crab Tree. I park at the side of the road and walk down under the little bridge. The water is low enough sometimes you can walk a cross from side to side. I've found some epic rocks out there. ~(Also just because you enjoy the Oregon outdoors so much I'm going to share with you a personal favorite spot of mine but I haven't rock hunted there, it's for photography, the experience. Look up "Wells Creek Rd." And if you do, park at the end of the gravel road by the forestry gate and you might find a witches chimney? You might find 2? You might find an abandoned old truck being swallowed by the wilderness, you might find old growth moss covered trees. I know you'll be very respectful out there so please enjoy this gem I stumbled upon by accident just exploring in the past.)

The easy accessible spots are easy to be picked over unless you have a kayak or a snorkel but I know what spot you are talking about. I've been there at least once before but didn't find too much right away but Amy's grandparents live in Scio and every time we pass that river, I look at the gravel bar wanting to give it a second go around. At some point I'll have to look that up and make a trip. :) Thank you for sharing that!

I don't want to be too intrusive as a good rock hunting spot can be just as if not more secretive than a good fishing spot but I am curious to know what county you're rock hunting in on the Willamette there. I'm in Lane and I just don't normally come across spots like that. Maybe I just need to venture out more but if you don't mind,I would sure like to know. Thanks
@akessler2596

My thoughts are the further south you go on the Willamette, the bigger the agates get, from what I see posted in groups. I'm in PDX, and you find more stuff I believe may be from ice age glacial lake floods, lots of river potatoes.

I'm sure there are other spots but you would have to use a kayak to find access points in the Willamette valley.

@@WorldofRockhounds I just wanted to say thank you! I’ve encountered a lot of rockhounders on KZbin who won’t divulge any information about locations they’re hounding. Kinda bums me out because I thought rockhounders would be more inclusive as a community and would be happy to share. What time of year do you recommend visiting the Hyak Park location? Thanks again!
@WorldofRockhounds
@WorldofRockhounds 2 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! If its a public area, I really don't mind sharing information but I do also respect private information if the person trusting me with that knowledge wants to keep it more hush hush. Summer is probably best when the water isn't super high. If you use a Kyak, my advice would be to find someone that has floated that area and can help you navigate some parts of the river. I know others have also started in Corvallis and have taken the day to travel from there to Albany and have found cool things inbetween. The Willamette river in general throughout the valley can provide beautiful agates and jaspers wherever there is a gravel bar. Just have to find one and hope that water raised enough during the winter to reveal new treasures :)

LOL, 2 years later, but... if you ever want to find out what's in a small concretion like that, we can try my xray unit at work. It might not reveal the contents, depending on the density and the difference in density between the host and the content.
