I’ve been watching square dancing here on KZbin for about an hour, and this is the best video I’ve seen so far! I used to be a square dancer years ago and I miss it a lot!

Me too. I used to square dance 40 years ago and these bring back a lot of memories. I wish my ex-wife had kept at it. Maybe we wouldn't have gotten divorced. :)

So do I. I danced for many years here in Western Canada and also down in the USA. I've never had so much fun and met so many super great people. Who knows Lisa, perhaps we even danced in the same square at some time? If we have, I want to apologize for stepping on your toes. :) LOL

They probably thought that it would be fun for most of the kids. I've always been skeptical about square dancing myself despite the fact that I pretty much love any type of dance. However it doesn't look as silly as I thought it would and the music is actually decent.

Look at some of the other videos on KZbin of square dancers in the United States. They dress this way, too. It's not how they "think country people dress." It's how square dancers dress.

I can remember back in the 80s them wearing outfits like this for square dancing but it was better dancing than this and the music definitely wasn't pop.

I wish I had been wise enough in Jr. High to have not pretended to hate square dancing just because everybody else hated it or pretended to hate it. It was so much fun and I'd have enjoyed it much more if I had just not cared if I'd been seen truly enjoying it. It takes a rare person to be wise enough at that age though to be true to themselves. I'm in my late twenties and god dammit, I'm going to talk my boyfriend into going square dancing with me!

i truly hated it because it was part of a christmas dance in sweden every highschool student had to do, it was mandatory if you didnt participate you got an F in gym and it was nearly impossible to get in to college. yes it sounds ridiculous but its true, you couldnt fail it if either so the only way to get an F in dancing was to not participate by faking an ilness or just skip. i think now they got rid of it because of the escalating imigration, if you werent a christian you didnt have to do it either so it was really unfair and most imigrants faked being muslims just to skip it, in hindsight i should have done the same because sweden has freedom of religion to. this christmas dance they did was horrible, everyone hated it while those who was either of another religion or just had so many Fs their future was ruined anyway laughed at us poor kids who had to suffer through it, an yes even the popular kids had to suffer through it because the stakes where to high. but as i said this was 10 years ago, i think they removed it

The language is part of the basic definition of Modern Western Square Dance. The calls and directions are always in English. The patter (filler words) can be in any language, but the dance directions are always English. Some of the call names are actually foreign words, but since the call name never changes, that is okay :)

Western square dancing in France ?
@Fritzrgc8 жыл бұрын
It's a natural. Modern Western Square Dance (the style demonstrated here) is a direct descendant of French ballroom square dance (Quadrille)
@ZoeRPM8 жыл бұрын
Good point. I do some old Playford squares, including Hunsdon House, believed to date from 1580, which includes the world's first Grand Square. The history explains some of the terms, which are either French (for example, dos a dos) or a direct translation of the French, e.g. grand chain, ladies' chain. It's a shame that the tradition of the quadrille and the cotillion have largely been lost in France so the connection has been broken. If you're interested in doing some Playford dances in England, I can recommend Morley College Folk Dance Club in London. HF Holidays also offer Playford dancing events. I went to one in Malhamdale in November, for example.

@ZoeRPM8 жыл бұрын
In Western square dancing you dance with each person of the opposite sex in the set, not with one person throughout. If your teacher doesn't know this, demand someone who knows the Callerlab syllabus and will teach you to Mainstream level, otherwise it's a waste of time.
