Well I think that was the Jackal. That whole demon was the Jackal. It was a retcon because in the original the Jackal supposedly birthed Damien, but in this one the Jackal impregnated Margaret. Brennon mentioned the Jackal in the first act, I'm pretty sure. They even showed the Jackal in the fire at the end. I definitely don't think it was a demon, I think that was full on the Jackal. I also have a theory that in The Omen (1976) when Brennon told Robert that Damien's mother was a Jackal was a way to protect Margaret and Carlita.

Exactly. We briefly see the Jackal that impregnated Margaret at the end when the curtains burn down and the Jackal is shown on fire, and Margaret sees it too.

The thing is that the demon was humanoid. They showed his hands on multiple scenes prior and also when they showed it having sex with another woman. They could have had, somehow, fixed it if in fact it was shown the demon as a jackal. And/or saying/showing placing a jackal skelleton in the grave. Wouldn´t have saved it but somehow.

So glad to hear you enjoyed The First Omen. The movie seems to be surprising folks with its quality. Most critics I've seen are very enthusiastic, with the couple that had a more reserved reaction grudgingly admitting it's at least not awful. Like you, I believe Jerry Goldsmith's score was a major part of the effectiveness of the first three movies, so I'm especially relieved to hear folks mentioning that the score is very good.

If there’s an Antichrist, an evil force, then there is a force of Good, or, let’s say, the force of Faith clashing against it. Now that the Church conspiracy have led to evil incarnate, they can control and channel its growth (as seen in the original Omen installments) and create a scenario using their own forces. In the original movies, they have an instruments and a modality to kill Damien, but the executors were stopped just before they could…

I love the movie but what they did wasn´t a simple retcon. Not only was it shown in the first movie but the sequels also dealt with it: the second by the doctors discovering the jackal´s cells on Damien´s blood and the third by Damien himself praising it. Besides, it isn´t like a retcon in comics where it can be done 1. By just mentioning that something was different yet when you go back and read the same old comics doesn´t change it or 2. By having it, somehow, consistent to the original context. For instance, Wonder Woman´s origins. Most people will know by now (either from the comics since 2011 or the movies) that she is a demigoddess but that wasn´t always the case. Since her creation in 1941 her origin was that the Queen of the Amazons sculpted a baby out of clay and asked the gods to give her life. The way it was changed is that, in reality, she was conceived by Zeus but the Queen spread the rumors of the clay creation so that Hera wouldn´t go against Hera and WW. That´s how you retconned something. In this way both origins remain valid. In The First Omen they could have, at the very least, shown or said that they were going to place the skelleton of a jackal to validate the story. More so, since, they "somehow" could have gotten away with it because in the scene where Maragarete is escaping and all is on fire they show (briefly) a jackal. As such, the fact that Damien had jackal´s cells would still have been true. ...and no, the demon wasn´t a jackal. They showed that it was humanoid. More so, you say that in your head cannon they placed the remainings of the demon in the grave. Then how come they didn´t discovered that the remains of Margarete and the baby girl weren´t there? There was also a HUGE thing that didn´t make sense. Damien couldn´t go into the church as a baby. He´d physically suffered. Yet, here we have Margarete that managed to become, basically, a Nun. And even Carlita was raised in a Catholic orphanage. And it wasn´t a problem for them. Still, I wish the movie is a success because it was amazing on its own and, maybe, with a sequel they could fix what they messed here so that First Omen and The Omen don´t contradict each other. What I´d do for a sequel is to make Damien´s sister be Kate. The reporter from The Omen 3.

It wasn't a retcon at all just going by jackal. If you read wiki a handful of ppl never believed jackal in grave was Damien mother and Robert thorn says a line that confused issue. Now nobody said Damien wasn't part jackal it's just not the one in grave. So all this movie did was specify which jackal. Or rather which definition of jackal. The reason Margaret and Carlita can be nuns, they are just women. My guess is they skip over women but Margaret and Carlita were only good for breeding and if they were more human then their mothers weren't part jackal. That's why, that's not that hard to imagine. Also look at Delia, damiens daughter, she had powers she was side seat to younger twin Alexander, another male, so apparently they don't use women. It would be cool if sister ended up being Kate then it would explain Delia's powers even more, but that's prolly not it. But how do you imagine to fix timeline. Damien is 32 in 1971 oh ps I think it's implied in end one of nuns was Margaret's mother

I love The First Omen. It wasn't a prequel that I asked for, but I'm damn sure glad that we got it. I don't know if I enjoyed it more than Late Night With The Devil. I'll have to revisit them both and make my decision. Great stuff.

Evan, in 2002, i saw a horror movie called Frailty, have you by chance seen it? Its Biblecal horror and right up there with The Exorcist, a small, haunting film directed by Bill Paxton and starring him as well. And Mathew McConnehay, probably misspelled his name. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. Little or no gore, just a tight, somewhat unnerving story. Check it out. Would love your take on it.

The size difference in the jackal bones😂 idk why it’s so funny. I really liked this movie, gave it a 4/5 stars just cuz it lost some points with the marvel ending. I haven’t heard too many reviews mention it, but I loved the throwback opening of this movie. I thought it was one of the most ominous scenes. The first birth scene was almost too much for me, it was gnarly

Hi Evan, agree with most of your review, especially the atmosphere and cinematography. However, these weaknesses took it away from being great IMO: 1. Why were both Margaret and Carlita children of the demon? I mean since there is an age difference, why didn't they keep Margaret at the convent and pursue their plot with her rather than try again years later with Carlita? Also, why couldn't the demon just mate with a woman to create Damien? Why did the demon need to father both Damien and his mother? 2. The entire Margaret plot was lifted from this movie that came out the same year as the original "Omen": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_the_Devil_a_Daughter. You could call The First Omen a remake of this just as much as an Omen prequel. 3. The Damien sister-twin at the end was dumb. It was as dumb as Omen IV with Damien's daughter. What role could his demonic sister or daughter play? This sister is never a plot point of the first three movies.

The retcons and the member berries were very odd choices, for a film that in large part was quite competent in an art house kind of way

The worst part is that the movie itself is amazing. And if they were to change the story they should have thought of a reasonable way to make it so. More so when the movie was in development since 2016.

"His mother was a..."!!! Don't forget we SAW the skeleton of the jackal that birthed Damien in the grave where Thorn and Keith Jennings went. They can't just change the narrative like that and not get called out for it.

The bones of the jackal could easily be explained as the remains of the jackal demon that was burned in the basement at the end. It’s already a supernatural entity, so having them shrink after being burned isn’t a stretch.

There’s an old interview where Richard Donner, the director of the Omen (1976), implies that the mother was impregnated by a Jackal.. so the narrative was there all along just not explicitly in the actual movie

Thank you, everybody seems to forget the jackal debate has existed since before the first omen and if you whine how a literal jackal didn't birth Damien umm that's flat up frowned upon stuff with animals, at least with the demonic stuff 1 it makes more sense and steers it away from worse stuff

I just finished watching it. A tad predictable. I guessed that Margaret would turn out to be Damian's mother and I kept calling things out before they happened. But that really didn't stop me from enjoying it. It really built up the tension and atmosphere and Nel Tiger Free did a great job. The bit towards the end when she's convulsing and foaming at the mouth as her stomach grows into a pregnant belly was awesome and creepy AF. I might have to put it on my yearly Halloween watch list
