Willem Dafoe's face straight up looks like a living woodcut illustration. The archaic dialogue has weight,kind of like reading a King James Bible instead of an updated version.Honestly, I would probably watch anything Eggers creates.

so young (youth, recklessness, yearning) wants the light (death , endgame, the answers to life) the thing that old (adulthood, experience, authority) has. maybe its a statement on how quickly and stubbornly we want to grow up. I think the drinking scene really examines the ideologues of youth and adulthood.

I think this movie is about the flimsy and mutable, yet seemingly insurmountable nature of thresholds. Sex and violence, dominance and submission, kinship and rivalry. The microscopic layer where the air touches the sea; the life-giving bacteria that forms at a coastline's edge where water meets land, and where spirits interface with a world they are in, but not of. To me, it's about the human experience, where the light of oneness gets forced through a prism, and then spends that lifetime searching for familiarity.

And in being so, can neither be settled as to whether it's all internal mental side effects grounded in realism, or events coming out of 'actual' spiritual encounters with the supernatural. Brilliant take.

Just rewatched it a couple days ago and man you echo a lot of what I think. It’s a movie where the sequence of events is fairly clear, but anyone watching could see a completely different thing than another because of all the layers and ambiguity. True art. Like a Rorschach test of a movie. And it’s the right brand of weird that makes it memorable, fun, and unique. 10/10 one of the most brilliant films of our generation.

The Lighthouse is one of my favorite films of all time and the first Eggers film I saw in a theater as well the end song Doodle Let Me Go by A.L. Lloyd is amazing. While I love The VVitch and The Northman, The Lighthouse feels so special, like you are watching an old film from an old era. I have seen the movie many times I don't know how many but it's such an entrancing movie to watch. I am still salty that Dafoe and Pattison were never nominated for an Oscar. They gave us one of the film's greatest duo acting performances. I also got into the history of Lighthouses and have visited some, I even wrote my lighthouse story for a radio play I was doing, I hope to get back into Lighthouse history again soon or later.

Evan, what an incredible analysis. I was knocked out by this movie when i first saw it. I've only seen it once, but after seeing your wonderful video, i want to see it again. Lots of mindbending imagy in this movie but the one that stuck in my memory was of Young having his liver plucked out. For me like the scene in Night of the Hunter, in which we see Shelley Winters bound to a car at the botton of the river, a slit in her throat, her hair flowing out, caught by the wave. I'm patiently waiting for Nosferatu. Thank you, Evan.

The Lighthouse hit me on so many different levels. First as a reenactor Eggers so spot on with the material culture and visuals; getting lighting correct in a world without electricity is incredibly hard to do on film and get across the idea how dark the nights were with just fires and candles. Second as a huge fan of German Impressionism, mysticism and Lovecraft, the sheer weirdness of the film had me digging through my collection of Weird Tales and Fangoria. Third as a trademan, I'm a carpenter by profession and the way that Old rules the roost and the speech when the floors weren't clean enough, I've heard in almost word for word in some way when one of the old bastards on site was tearing into an apprentice and generaly how Old treats Young is still the way many Old and Young tradesmen interact with eachother; the sadism of Old and the rage of Young.
@julesrules729726 күн бұрын
Seeing this in theaters was otherworldly. I definitely needed a rewatch with subtitles but I kind of enjoyed having to rely on context clues from the actors' expressions, body language and cadence when i wasn't sure what exactly was said in a few parts.

I watched this film for the first time a few weeks ago; lately I've been getting interested in occultism and the history of demonology, and while I was watching the film I couldn't stop thinking about Leviathan. Not only because of the setting of the film being an isolated lighthouse surrounded by water, but also because Leviathan is often viewed as being both the hellmouth, and the prince of hell that represents envy, which seems to be a driving force for Young's actions in the movie; first either letting his superior die, or even outright killing him, then taking his identity. Then almost as soon as Young becomes a wickie, he desires to take what Old has. The life he stole from his old boss isn't enough for him, he needs to take what others have. I don't think this was by any means the intention behind the film, but I think it's cool that this film can be interpreted so easily in so many different ways depending on the knowledge you already have, and this is just my own personal example.

although much of this film's plot directly mirrors that of The Shining (isolation, the power of a man-made landmark, a forbidden room with supernatural abilities, strange dream-like relationships developing with women, unreliable protagonists, and axe murder to name a few) the lighthouse makes use of these conventional tropes in a really unique way. definitely a huge favourite of mine.

Fantastic video and I love what you say about the narrative; it's what I call a Kaleidoscope movie. We all see our own truth in it. To me? I see workplace stress and the inevitable clash that boils up with a co-worker or superior you simply can't find any way to get along with. And how we get totally railroaded into having to sit through and take it, and what that can do to a person's psyche. And yet I've seen 50 other takes on what it means to people and they're all every bit as valid.
@TheBeird26 күн бұрын
Yes! I watched this with my brother the first time I saw it and he just wouldn't accept that this story was a comedy. I think he was disgusted by it once Young came across Old . . . spilling his beans at the top of the lighthouse. I was entranced by its symbolism and madness, along with the clear comedy. Don't know how many of you guys not from Britain are aware of the sitcom Bottom starring Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson but, The Lighthouse is totally Bottom with a poets soul.

I also adore this movie and would love to nerd out about it with anyone who has seen it. This film reminds me a lot of Eraserhead, not so much the black and white aspect but the ambiguity of them both. Both have paper thin plots to give the viewer the slightest bit of structure. I actually enjoy Lighthouse more because it sticks more to mythology and an actual event, a Smalls Island Incident, as a backdrop. Love this movie. Eggers has been my favorite director since The VVitch. I can't wait for the next time he decides to make another great film!

30:30 I am! I understood the references to Proteus and Prometheus right away, but because of the sheer depth and multilayered approach the film takes, I'm not sure if it's the key to unlocking the plot like you believe it to be. i think ppl get a bit lost in the sauce bc of so many nonsensical things in this film. our brains are programmed to find patterns so every small detail has to have meaning. and trying to rationalize everything kinda makes us not see what's right in front of our eyes. personally when i watched this , it was painfully obvious to me that this is another iteration of the old theme of hidden knowledge/light/fire that we as humans are not supposed to learn of, but we chase it like maniacs, and when we learn it/see it, it drives us insane. i believe also that this is why prometheus is so prominent in the film, because the reason the gods punished him was because he stole this secret fire - basically, knowledge and how to build tools - and gave it to humanity, sending us on our path to technological development and, well, killing each other, killing god, etc. there's lots of movies and books that deal with this theme, lovecraft being the most obvious, but there's also danny boyle's "sunshine", season 1 of "true detective", etc.
