I would add that 'You are there to entertain guests.' ... which means they will prob hang longer-- purchase food & drink. I experienced this first-hand a few weeks ago at a winery that was launching a new Friday night sunset dinner. This called for a very different vibe than the winery's Saturday crowd. So I asked myself what would I want to hear if I was having a relaxed dinner after a long week of work. Built the set list very carefully for my duo. Voila! Worked beautifully. I can honestly say that none of the 50 or so guests left. In fact... they made effort to get closer to the stage and interact with us. It felt like a super-comfy piano bar. The owner was ecstatic! Exactly what she had in mind. 😎👍🎸🎹

For my band, A good way to know that everyone is ready before starting a song is that if all musicians are facing the people that means ok, if someone is facing the stage or the drums means wait. And that works for us without looking at each other or asking are you ready ?..! 👍

I always instruct the musicians I hire that if someone compliments the band during the night, even though we know things weren't going that well, NEVER say anything about the problems we may be having with sound or wrong notes, etc. Just politely thank them for their compliment and move on. Pointing out to someone that their compliment is misplaced due to a band off-night insults their intelligence and causes them to not want to see the band again. I learned that lesson the hard way long ago.

That's good advice. What might just be the musician being humble could be taken as an insult to intelligence. Its so weird how if you have a short conversation it can be misunderstood. Like if the conversation was longer, the musician might say come check us out next week we'll def have that bit down, or whatever. But still, best not to put the idea in the head of the audience that you suck.

Quick addendum for the “don’t attract attention to mistakes” thing. Under most circumstances, that’s true. If you clam a note or miss a change, just keep it rolling…no one cares. But a couple of the pro bands I play with will actually take it in the *complete opposite* direction sometimes. If someone has a mental block, starts a tune in the wrong key or misses a cue, it’ll become a THING. Everyone turns around and points, the singer goes “weeeee” into the microphone, the offender drops to his knees…stuff like that. If you do that once or twice over the course of a three hour gig, it kind of endears you to the audience, adds an additional level of entertainment, etc. It also has a way of robbing mistakes of their “gravitas”. They become part of the performance as opposed to something that’s disruptive or embarrassing. The worst I ever got it, myself, was when I completely jacked a melody line in front of a thousand people or so. I mean, got distracted by something shiny and missed *every* note…with Britney Spears’ MD watching from the audience. It was a COLOSSAL failure. But the band launched into a fit of scream laughter and it ended up being the funniest moment of the night. TLDR: ignore small mistakes but don’t be afraid to have fun with the obvious ones here and there.

I love when performers own their mistakes like this! I think it is a Time and Place and up to your discretion thing. If there is momentum in the song, the show must go on. Ignore the mistake and move on. If you see an opportunity to make it a fun memory of a unique performance with the audience, ham it up, maybe after the song if there’s that momentum first. E.g. one of my fave bands kept having string issues. The first time, a string broke right as the song started. So they held off on starting the song and joked around for like three minutes while getting a new guitar on stage. Later, a string broke during a song. The guitarist looked startled but he kept playing and then had a funny callback to earlier in the show. They didn’t even have to have a call back because I and probably many people forgot the string had broke again by the end of the song.

That is awesome. The closest to this I've ever seen was catching a performer smile shyly when making a mistake that nobody else noticed. I've adopted that as my attitude but I like your band's idea even better. I'd kind of like to check your band out, cause I'm endeared already. You got a link we can see?

It’s a lot of that type of stuff…backing up such and such artist, playing clubs on the weekends, functions and events, blah blah blah. This isn't an "on stage" thing, but going along with the advice not to point out mistakes, I had a drummer who I found talking to a new fan who loved our music, but instead of thanking them for being there and enjoying it, perhaps getting them to follow us, the drummer only talked about how bad the supplied drumkit was and that it sucked as a gig. I talked to the drummer privately and explained why that was the wrong way to talk with a fan, but didn't work with that drummer for long anyways. Pity because he is a great drummer - just didn't have a good attitude.

Spot on! Earlier this year we brought in a new guitarist. I think he was the first truly toxic person I have ever met! Didn't start that way but after a few weeks... the sky was always falling... the glass always half empty-- my dog almost died this weekend, my wife fell down the stairs, my basement flooded over the weekend, I have life-long tinnitus now, chronic back pain, why is there no security at this winery?, on and on-- these are all things he actually said! He was quickly beginning to poison the positive vibe of our group. On gig days he was last to show up and first to leave. Fortunately... he was gone after just two gigs. We quickly found an awesome replacement and we've been rocking in 2021! All good! 😎👍🎸🎹

Hi and thank u so much for checking out this video - so appreciated! And thank you for sharing that story - you were so right to talk to that drummer as that is totally not how you talk to fans. Interesting how you say you had a drummer who you “found talking to a new fan…” I recently did a gig with a 9 piece jazz band, most of whom had been together for several years. There were 60 paying audience members at a 3 set gig. Before the gig, during the breaks and after the gig I chatted with some people in the audience, including a few well known musicians whom I’d met/played with previously but hadn’t caught up with for several years. Three of these interactions were quickly interrupted by different members of the band “cutting in” to talk to the people I was talking with. In each case I politely excused myself from the 3-way chats and went off to get a drink or engage with someone else. At the time I thought they were kinda rude interruptions, considering there were 60 other people in the room whom my new bandmates could have spoken with. But thinking about it, these band members may well have been checking out what I/we were talking about, to make sure I was representing the band appropriately. Talk about controlling behaviour! But I should’ve had an inkling from the first jam, when the band leader sent me 10 charts and said, “Why don’t you pick 9 of these that you like to play at rehearsal?” Ha ha!
@HardwiredMusicMaker
@HardwiredMusicMaker 3 ай бұрын
@@MisterWade74had this drummer been thanking the fan for listening I’d have been thrilled. I didn’t go over to listen in they were right beside me in the washroom. Also for other band members cutting in - sometimes it’s easier to join a couple of people one of whom you know than to strike up a conversation with a random person. Or maybe they wanted to make sure you were appropriate with an audience member which could have come from experience with someone like that drummer I had. There’s lots of reasons that aren’t “controlling”. Or maybe the make up of that bad was a bunch of narcissistic musicians. 😜
@MisterWade74
@MisterWade74 3 ай бұрын
@@HardwiredMusicMaker Yeah it may be easier to interrupt a conversation between two people, but in this case there were no “random people”, as 100% of the audience had paid to hear this band, so the established band members should have known most of the people in the room. As the newbie playing my first gig with them, I was endeavouring to enjoy catching up with some people I hadn’t seen in a while. I’ve been a professional musician for 30 years and am well used to the idea of “working the room” to ensure everyone in the audience is “reached” by a band member to thank them for coming out to the gig. In this respect it’d be easier for the 9 band members to cover 60 audience members by each “finding their own fan”. I did find this behaviour controlling and used the anecdote of being given 10 charts and asked to pick 9 that I wanted to play at rehearsal as another example of the band’s vibe, i.e. we’re telling you what to play, but attempting to give you the impression that you’ve got input into song selection.

#1 Play a wrong note once, it‘s a mistake. Play the same wrong note twice, it‘s Jazz. #2 Never troubleshoot your gear during a gig. Never. Any interruption beyond, say, restarting the current song is guaranteed to kill any vibe in the audience dead. Bring a second guitar and a cheap, small modelling pedal as a backup rig, and hook the latter up to PA, then mute it. If the soundguy isn‘t fast asleep, you can switch to your „oh crap“ backup thingy, mute your normal rig and mix in the failsafe. Practice switching rigs mid song, and chances are you won‘t even have to restart the song. I use an ancient Digitech RP series pedal that sounds almost bearable, i.e. it’s just north of „horrible“. Small, cheap, does clean and dirt with a bit of delay and reverb okay. Saved my ass three times, cost 20 quid used off of eBay.

Golden tips for performing. Songlist is vital. Even if you're playing solo. Time your tunes and performance. A little banter with the crowd is ok, but keep it short unless you're witty, or a comedian. They are there to be entertained. Tune silently and quickly. If you can talk to the crowd while you're tuning it? Even better. If someone in the band is tuning, someone should be talking to the crowd. Dead air time kills the vibe. If people are dancing, keep playing into the next tune. " The last chord...into next tune " is profesional. Don't have new strings on the guitar that haven't been broken in. Have an extra guitar in case you break a string ( although it's more to look after ) and have it tuned pre performance to save time. Learn your equipment , sound, and have your knobs on amps or board pre-set, ESPECIALLY if you're solo. Thank you for posting. Have fun and smile!

First of all, as someone said in a previous comment David is indeed a fantastic teacher. He helped me break out of the pentatonic rut, got me playing in the modes and really opened up a whole new world of options for soloing. It was funny, I had the technique and could cop songs from videos but didn't know what to really do with it and how to apply it to improvising. David helped me learn how and why things work the way they do. Anyway, great stuff! The points in this video are pure gold if you're in a band. I've been playing in bands for decades... and I've seen every one of these issues in bands I've played in. Everything from dead space between songs (uh... no, contrary to what an "experienced" bassist I played with said once, you can't take 2 minutes between songs!) to the dirty looks when mistakes are made. No, just don't do it! I've also seen an "established" tribute band here in town cussing out the sound man over the mic/PA. Poor form, made everyone uncomfortable and pretty much destroyed whatever enthusiasm the crowd had for that member of the band. Keep up the great work David!

If your band is just starting out then you probably WILL have significant gaps between songs. A good trick here is for band members to provide cover for any issue solving. Drums can be kicking out a modest beat (not too loud), with bass and whoever else (keyboards, or second guitar) providing some neutral support. Again, not too loud. Keep it like background music. In this way the audience will be more tolerant of issue solving between songs such as, finding the lyrics, fixing broken string or tuning.

Great points in this video. On a different note; something that might be helpful to bands starting out, or even more so , to musicians just starting to play and get together, would be a list of 10, 25, or even 50 or more songs that everyone should know. This would be a great time-saver for musicians getting together for the first time instead of spending a half hour asking each other "Do you know this one?"

I agree with everything except for the bit about keeping a tuner on your headstock. I splashed out and bought a clip-off tuner, which is a much better investment than a clip-on tuner. Why? Well, guitar designers create the most beautiful, stylish headstocks, sometimes art deco, sometimes symmetrical, phallic, etc, then… then… guitarists go put a stupid looking, dawky piece of tech equipment on it. It’s like having a label or price tag sticking out the back of your shirt. It spoils the aesthetic. It’s about as rock’n’roll as Richard Marx. Clip on your tuner, tune up, then clip off your tuner and leave it somewhere handy, then look cool, not dawky, and carry on looking and sounding great.

Want to hear something we do? We all wear headsets.. We can communicate at all times. And we don't have a set list.. we play according to the crowd. The third set we say what do you guys want to hear? Let them pick a couple songs. Keep them involved... it's pretty cool doing that because they know we are giving 100%. We've messed up a couple times on songs the audience called out.but could tell we were having fun too.. Win win

Sadly a lot of guys, especially younger fellas, won't blink at this. However, for the people that killed their ego for the sake of progression...this hits home! I've watched many "dead performers" and "stage freakouts". It boggles me brother. If you put all that time in outside of the "time to shine" and you waste it all in that 30-60 minute span... what are you even doing? Is it truly fun for you? Exciting? Ask yourself those things if you have these problems mentioned in the video! I'm a freak live haha! And they love it. Because I LOVE IT and am having a BLAST with it. I'm not concerned about if they'll like the music, or me for that matter. I'm just having fun and letting those that made it possible know I'm grateful to advertise my hard work at their venue!

It never fails to amaze me how many; "musicians" that have; "played in bands for years" (or decades) "all over the place" DON`T KNOW THESE THINGS! ...drummers who can`t even pre stage their kit off stage, but instead take forever back n forth fiddling to get set up! You`d think at some point they`d figure it out? ...or trade it for a bass boat? So, good on you!

Spot on about mistakes, the audience usually never notice and after a gig never point it out. I find always smiling and looking like you are enjoying the music works (even if not one of your favourite songs) If you don't look like you're enjoying it and getting into the song why would the audience!

Love this video! I’ve played in bands for crowds ranging from one to several thousand people at a time… Your list is so spot on. My brief additions: First, don’t be wasted. Seems self evident, but bears mentioning. Second, have a leader and follow that person (or click track, or Something). So you are One. You have to be One before you can be more than the sum of your parts, and being more than the sum of your parts is the whole reason to be in a band right?

We only ever had one train wreck where we had to stop. The crowd didn't seem interested during the first set so we had a scoob in the break. It was stronger than expected and we were starting the second set with an original song we'd only ironed out the night before. We reached a point and three of us went into different sections at once. We just stopped and laughed. The audience laughed too. Next time we got through it and the crowd cheered. They were with us for the rest of the night. Not that I'd recommend a train wreck to rescue a slow night but it worked that time.

You know what has always stood out to me, and it's been twenty years since I've seen it, but Cat Stevens did a show for I think the BBC in like 1971, and if I remember correctly it was Moonshadow he stopped and restarted like 3 times. Thing is, I can't hear why he was stopping. Whatever it was he was doing to mess up so badly he had to restart the song, at least twice, was only audible to him. That really stands out to me, even now. I have a reputation for never playing a wrong note on guitar and bass, but on the piano whenever I've messed up during a show I actually tend to HIDE the fact, a small smile at most, because chances are even those who heard it will see your confident bluster and decide you meant to. *edit: also, hello to the person who goes to my channel every day and looks up my last few comments and gives them thumbs up. we always had some gag going. we'd do a song with a fadeout and hold up a sign that said "APPLAUSE (this is a fadeout)," play a ballad with a funk or disco beat, or an old time rocker as hard bop. I play the drums and in a drum solo I'd drop a stick, continue to play the solo with one stick while rummaging through the stick bag, finding and discarding various mallets, brushes, fly swatters, paint brushes, while finishing with a chopstick. False endings, like finishing "The Lady is a Tramp" ("That's why the lady is a tramp.") and someone would get up to get a drink or talk to the audience sit down and immediately swing back into the end chorus, "She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair .."

Yeah I agree, remembering why you are there. We used to do a lot of wedding receptions. So we would learn the requested songs as well as we could. (even if they weren't out typical genre) Stifle our egos & remember the band id not the star of this kind of show. The couple are. And try to shift as much good attention to them; and provide an atmosphere of calm fun.. Later after the cake toasts and food and traditional dances. Things will get lively (actually rip roaring sometimes) And then the band can turn up the heat from simmer to fry, This formula worked well for us.

To 8:40: We once had a band that was 3/4 covers and some own songs. We played something like Judas Priest, ACDC, ZZTop, Black Sabbath and such more. This style. We played successfully in some bikers clubs and at biker summer parties. And bikers are very correct people and payed well. (as long as you treat bikers well and respect their "respect") So someday we played at the summer party of the biggest biker club here in Thuringia (Germany). Of course not as headliner, but so around 5 pm at late afternoon. Of course there is no big party, noone wants to dance or, we got applause but it was afternoon and they wanted to sit down there and drink beer. And what die our singer say when trying to animate the audience? "You fucking lame bikers". (in German of course) What happend? More than 20 people talked at this evening to me, including the president, and they said all the same "Hey, youe music and performance was great but your singer sucks, throw him out". We never played any biker venue again! This made the round. The band dissolves than anyway not only because of this.

One time I was switching guitars b/c the set list said the next number had the funky tuning. But the band leader decided to skip that one at the last minute and hit the sample introducing the tune that followed. So I had to grab my regular-tuned guitar, get the chord in, and had it half strapped when I was supposed to start playing chords. So I started playing, with this half-strapped guitar, kinda holding it steady with my hip and elbow. This is a song where the chords never play a rest note so I was going to have to figure something out. Soon my body started sliding to the floor of the stage because the guitar wanted to slide down my hip and I needed more leg to keep it from falling. Eventually, I was laying on the ground and finished the song that way.

So I guess my tip is that if you're going to deviate from the set list make sure everyone knows.

Our band began doing batches of 6 songs with a brief moment to address the crowd, then on to the next 6 before our break. We put songs together that were all capo'd songs, or a couple together with drop D tuning and make sure we do instrument changes at the small break halfway. As for sound issues, a soundcheck 15-20 minutes before the first set is a must to make sure everything works. Nothing worse than starting late with everyone watching you. Leave the mixing board alone once you have your mix! We also start a bit quieter if the room is half full and turn up gradually as it gets busier. That works for the older crowd, anyways.

I clicked out of general interest, but you went straight to the point! We formed a few months ago, and there's a 'struggle' with the setlist; we're almost always in a tug of war with the songs. Truth is, we intend to be a ROCK covers band, so yes, dance music is off the board. We've (a female singer and me bassist, 8-10 years older, and with some previous experience), convinced the guitarist (and founder of the band, must admit) to lighten up and try some lighter stuff, plus he 'doesn't like' Rock songs in Spanish, and we freakin' live in México!!! It's mandatory!!! Not everyone in our town at least, is into the deep cuts of Soundgarden, much less other, more "esoteric" metal bands, okay? But the most important part: there's a reluctance to make a solid setlist, and FOLLOW IT! That means having to wonder which song is next, followed by 15 or 20 seconds of 'dialogue', and me finding out which song we're playing two seconds before the drummer starts count. I'm the bassist, so my patience, politeness and coolness is almost infinite... but ALMOST. Like any bassist, I actually enjoy being lost in the shadows, my purpose is to lay the mood and secretely control the minds of both the audience and my bandmates with the complicity of the drummer, but I'm nearing the point to jump out and lay down the Law, before this band implodes like the last one.

Great advice. National acts don't noodle and they don't waste time between songs. That's not a budget issue, that's just a matter of rehearsal. Sound is also key. What's the point of playing great if it sounds bad? It's good to invest time in the soundcheck.

Addendum to the this - related to noodling, I hate telegraphing the next song. Been in bands where guys will play the main riff of the next song when no one else is ready or with them. Oof. I sometimes would play through the set on my own not plugged in with tracks playing so I know what to play and am undeterred even if monitoring is messed up. Then, if it's really good, you can soar. Also the guy who wants to pretend he's playing MSG with his playing/volume. Had that with another guitarist and also a drummer. Tough to overcome pleasantly in a small venue.

Great advice. Be professional if you want to be paid as a professional. Keep a smile on your face and address the crowd with humor and humanity. The more you interact with them on a human level, the more they will love you. People want you to connect with them on a personal level. On our breaks, I walk into the crowd and talk to them. I thank them for coming out to see us. I shake hands with them. I ask for song requests and at least act like I'm writing them down. Know your material and designate ONE leader. We always say "We're not here to embarrass ourselves." Our guitar player is our MD and he has stopped and re-started songs when the tempo was too fast. The crowd loves it. They get something to talk about to their friends. I was at a Billy Joel show here in Pittsburgh a while back and he stopped a song, rose from the piano, and screamed to his guitar player " Do you know this F'ing song or not!!!!!?" They re-started and it went wonderfully. Here I am telling you the story from 10 years ago. If you show the crowd that you are having fun, they will enjoy you more. Good luck out there boys and girls.....

Not sure having a rigid set-list is a good idea for local pubs. There are different audiences at a given location so choice is better at the time. Also, there are often a lot of requests for music not on a set-list ... this just means we have to be up-to-speed on our entire spread of music.

My last band had a set-list planned. It was a small coffee house gig, hour long, three of us. The singer/guitarist told the lead guitarist and I after the first song he was throwing out the set list as he didn't feel it. I wasn't too worried, as I thought he was just going to re-arrange things. That was the case with the second song that we'd planned for later. After that he would just throw out song names. One we'd rehearsed once 6 months earlier and it bombed so we never rehearsed it again. I didn't remember it. The lead guitarist was looking at me for cues as he didn't remember it. Don't do that to your bandmates. I was already considering leaving the band and that didn't help my decision.

Hey there! Great informative video!! I will definately apply your tips. New to performing!! Would absolutely be ever so grateful for tips as to how to entertain the crowd between songs/sets etc. The only instrument I use is my voice, in an acoustic duo. I’m not shy when it comes to singing, but am horrible with the small talk, or knowing how to speak to the crowd, or speak period. I just feel odd, if that makes sense. Any tips would be wonderful!God bless

HI Jamie and thank u so much for checking out this video - really appreciated. Sure, I know how u feel as its a tough task to entertain the crowd between songs and to know what to say. A lot of it is experience - you get better and better and more and more comfortable the more you do it - so keep getting out there and refining your art and honing your skills. First thing is try not to have much lag time between songs - try to go one to the next quickly and smoothly. Maybe after the first three songs you can address the crowd and say hello and thank them for coming. You can mention your name and the band name and if you have an email list or merch or music of yours for sale. Then right into next batch of songs. Then after another five tunes say a few more words - maybe let the crowd know if there are any drink or food specials (the venue owners and love love this) or hold up what you are drinking and tell the crowd how good it is, if it is good that is, and tell them to perhaps consider trying one. Be genuine and kind and dont get political or controversial, keep it short but its important to address the people listening and thank them for coming. Tell them a short story about one of your songs or how u wrote it or an inspiring story - but be brief and keep it interesting. Between sets you take a break - no need to entertain - maybe put some light recorded music on over the PA but low volume - you are not requited to entertain between sets. Hope this helps - it gets easier so keep at it. And be sure to take a good look around the channel as we have tons of killer content and lessons lots of fun stuff. Enjoy and stay tuned - lots more content coming soon. Thank you for the tips for a gig how many songs do you play
@rockongoodpeople
@rockongoodpeople 10 ай бұрын
set length depends on a few things - often you may be playing on a bill with other bands - so usually if a three band bill you may get 45 min set each or an hour each. If you are playing the whole night by yourself often venues want the bands to play 3 or 4 sets. Avg set depending on song length may be 12-14 songs or around there.And be sure to take a good look around the channel as we have tons of killer content and lessons lots of fun stuff. I suggest the first 3 AND last 3 songs of every performance should always be fast, and played without ANY dead space between them. Go in with a bang, go out with a bang! The audience will forget all the mush in the middle.

If you play a wrong note once it's a mistake. Play it twice and it's jazz. ;-) Yeah, you're there to play music for people while they BUY drinks. You're not a stand-up comedian. The only line you have in common with stand-up is, "Don't forget to tip your waitstaff." Great advice about performing. I've been forced into doing some 'acting' (theme events) and the best bit I learned was about improv. Always affirm, never negate. When someone says something to you, respond, "Yes, and..." That keeps it going and building. Just gotta keep that positive thing in front of the audience.

This is a little outside the box. How much stock do you put into what a band wears on stage? My band is basically jeans and a (usually black) T-shirt. We don't look like "rock stars." Just four normal guys.
@rockongoodpeople
@rockongoodpeople 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott. I think its important what a band wears on stage as the band "look" can be somewhat defining - but to a degree. I think you have to be genuine to who you are and the message you want to get across - kind of goes without saying. But keep in mind that you are entertainers as well as musicians so u have to be entertaining - and to that extent what you are wearing means something. Its finding the level that you want to do that - some bands into the theater and drama take it to the extreme with costumes and make up. Personally not my cup of tea, but some bands are into it. But you want to look the part of that you belong up on stage and are entertaining. IN some bands they all wear black. Some bands they all wear a certain color vest. Some bands its ripped up jeans, T-shirts, lots of necklaces and chains. Even Bruce Springsteen even exemplified the working man as that what he captured in so many of his tunes as he wore jeans and a white T-shirt often - kind of like the look of John Cougar too. So you want to find something even maybe if its everyone dress a little different but not looking like you just got out of your 9-5 job - maybe a cool rock star shirt or some killer black jeans - something. There are many companies that make rock star type clothes like WornStar Clothing company, RocknRoll Soul - just google stage clothes or rock star clothes. Trick is not to be cheesy but genuine and try to look the part a little. That is my two cents anyway - make sense? And be sure to take a good look around the channel as we have tons of killer content and lessons taught in the same format - lots of fun stuff. Enjoy and stay tuned - lots more lessons and content coming soon. I also have another KZbin channel at EPIC GUITAR INSTRUCTION which is more song based - so be sure and check that channel out also and learn some killer songs - lots of killer lessons and content as I post on both channels.
