so real late last night as I was finally tying the bow around this fat ass christmas gift, I was gettin REAL nervous cause I know I say some pretty savage shit about the most beloved child in video games right now. But I spent a LOT of time on this vid (as you know) and rewrote it and kept editing it down until I could fully stand by every word. I think my only regret is not giving more attention to all of the things that Red Dead 2 does SUPER GOOD (visuals, writing, characters, music, D'Angelo) but I guess that would kinda go against the thesis of the vid. Anyways, just wanted to say that I care about this vid a lot and I hope you like it and I hope it leads to lots of interesting conversations. I'm super interested to hear your responses either in this gamer chat or on Twitter. Thanks for watching and have a lovely holiday :) xoxo - Jacob

There's this side mission where you help a woman in the middle of nowhere whose husband just died. Throughout the quest, Arthur teaches her basic survival skills. I completed this quest as Arthur and after the time skip I went back to the woman's house as John. A special cutscene is triggered where John meets the woman who is shown to be alive and well. The game never told me to do this and there is nothing in the map that points you back there. It felt so satisfying and special. My brother even told me that he did not finish the quest as Arthur and when he went back there as John the woman was dead because she wasn't taught how to survive by Arthur. I feel like these type of special moments and interactions should be included more in future rockstar games.

And then you're rewarded with literally EVERY sneaking mission but that one where you steal a horse cart or whatever going wrong and having to shoot like 50 guys anyway. I'm not quite done the game yet but every mission feels like the same damn thing. Accept mission, Arthur ain't happy about it, does it anyway. Complete a task, it'll go smooth as silk. Something randomly goes wrong and suddenly there are 50 O'Driscoll's, Lawmen or Pinkertons freaking crawling out of the sewers to get you. 50 times in a row that's a super fun mission format...

It's kind of fucked up when Ubisoft has more gameplay freedom than Rockstar. Like, look at how Far Cry 3-5 handles outposts. You can either be a sneaky boi and kill everyone without being seen or heard. Or you can go on a murderous gun shooting rampage. Or you can be an asdhole and leave explosives for the enemy to walk into. Or you can be a pussy and snipe from a safe distance.

Rewatching this 3yrs later and it makes me think about a huge issue I have had with GTA Online (other than the obvious). Your character can purchase several cool features, such as Ballistic Equipment, mini drone, stealth helicopter etc. But if you load up a mission or heist, you can't utilize it to shake things up. I like to play with mods for this reason, but it would be nice to plan my heists with the idea in mind that all my other work playing has been helpful and not just a way to grief others or counter griefers

@Twinspinner Жыл бұрын
@@connorbranscombe6819 speaking of Cayo Perico, considering how open ended the game pretends for it to be, there's a dumb amount of scripting to how that's supposed to go. Like the "untraceable" weapons it requires you to steal every single time. For one thing, why is it necessary to steal new guns every time? If I'm taking them back with me to stash among my already untouchable criminal empire, who is going to find them to trace them back to me anyway? I should either just have to steal them once, and not get caught with them, or just be able to use my own guns that stay on me anyway. Same exact logic with the cutting torch. Steal once, continue using in every heist, as it will always be untraceable as long you keep it. ALSO, I should simply have the choice to not be forced to do a weapon setup at all, and be able to go to the island unarmed. If you do the heist stealthily, you don't need any weapons in the first place, and if you decide to do a stealth takedown of one of the dozens of guards around the island, you should be able to simply take their weapon ("untraceable" to me). AND, steal their guard uniform from their body, rather than being forced to search out a random crate with an unused uniform in it

Immune to critics= so true. How the fuck have IGN given GTA IV and V, as well as RDR1 and 2 all 10/10? I mean these are all very good games, but I'm not sure if any of them deserve 10/10- especially GTA V.
@SommerSen4 жыл бұрын
@@stephenhughes5156 I always have gotten the impression that the GTA fanbase was particularly easy to piss off. If IGN had given V even a 9.9, they would probably storm the headquarters and get every reporter's head on a pike. Every single complaint could be reflected with "PC". Especially the godawful "South-Park-without-the-charm" humor. My last GTA game was V. It's incredibly fun, and the flaws it had could be ignored, but I consider RDR1 better in every respect (minus details, but 1 is older than V which gives it an advantage), and I can complain a little about RD without being shot. The fandom kinda killed GTA for me, and then I learnt about the shark cards and crunch. I still respect the games because of how detailed they are, but they have important, growing issues. And as much as we hate game reporters & critics, remember that no game is perfect and no criticism leads to no fixes. People need to understand that we criticize the game because we care about it and the series. Replaying this game currently after playing at release. One of the most frustrating things that fits this video is in chapter 3 when Dutch tells you to not cause trouble in Rhodes to fit the story. That could have been a great incentive to make the player get creative with robbing stores or defusing situations, or even causing trouble and having repercussions of how the gang treats you - let me start a bar fight and then have to make it up to Rhodes and/or the gang before I could continue the story. Or hell maybe I want to respect Dutch's wishes and would avoid all that on my own terms. Don't just remove my weapon wheel while I'm in town and make Rhodes a totally different area to play in until I pass that point in the story.

Game is full of missed opportunities. Most of the criticism about rdr2 is not because it's a bad game, it's still a great game but it could be even better it might be the best game ever made. People criticize the game not because they don't like instead they liked it. There is a lot of games out there that completely garbage and no body talks about them. rdr2 is a very special experience but a lot of bad game design choices that really hurts it.

@@Rektz31 Yeah it's one of my favorite games, but there are some bafflingly stupid design choices on rockstar's part such as 1) Weapons being removed once you dismount your horse. Why is this a thing? 2) Not being able to rob banks outside of missions 3) How stupidly rigid the mission design is, and how it punishes you for being creative 4) New Austin is unlocked during the epilogue, and is literally just a huge empty stretch of land 5) Arthur's controls take time to get used to, but the horse controls feel like controlling a bowling ball on an ice rink. 6) Looting takes too long. We should just be able to walk over collectibles and pick them up automatically. 7) Most enemies in this game are generic goons with handlebar mustaches and terrible aim. Not enough enemy variety

Games nowadays, especially adventure games, are less games and more long movies. The gameplay is minimal. The effort is minimal. Its all on rails. The art is cool, the environment is great, the animations are neat... but I dont play games for that. It supplements the enjoyment but it doesnt make it enjoyable. What makes games different is the interactions, and if the interactions can be boiled down to "press button X" or "follow line on screen", what is the point? Why not just make a movie?

That last sentence is exactly how I've always felt about RDR2. Even the people I follow agree it felt like a playable Netflix series and they have almost nothing bad to say about the game. Everything about it was so great except for the actual gameplay itself. It's like building the mansion you dreamed of owning as a kid and using sand as the foundation.

I do think the whole western open world game design should be revised overall . It's not that games can't be realistic or cinematic, it's just that the pacing in a game like Rdr2 is totally off . It plays like an uncharted game set in an open world game design . One is a linear experience, the other is not . The genius behind the first Red dead redemption was how it knew how to draw the balance between fun and immersion. It didn't for one second forget that it was a game about having fun in the first place but also have an interesting cool story that succeeded in pulling your heart strings . What makes the uncharted series incredible is they knew their limitations in the first place and never sell theirselves as anything more than a fun linear cinematic adventure with well written stories and incredible characters to keep you engaged. Rdr 2 totally forgets the fun factor however and decides to go full realism mode . It could have been more interesting if there was something worth discovering in the big open world or some incredible npcs to interact with but again this is not an rpg , so no matter what you do , the experience will still be rather limited in the end . Immersion based on total realism can only take you so far , before you discover eventually that's all an illusion and nothing really differentiates my walkthrough from yours . What makes uncharted work simply can not be applied to a game as grand as Rdr 2 . So after 15 or 20 hours walking a linear path with nothing really worth discovering , the game eventually becomes boring , long before you see the game to its closure or see the credits roll .

Try hogtying a rank 5 bounty when you missed that one goon because his glitched AI had him sit quietly behind a barrel while you slaughtered his 60 friends. You're now stuck in a seven second long animation while a dude who kills you in three shots is firing at you from point blank range. Also, even after you've exited the animation, your character may glitch out when trying to swap to a weapon and just not react a few times in a row because it seems to have a certain transitional phase from animation to gameplay and vice versa, during which input reaction is extremely limited. But OMG LOOK AT THOSE ANIMATIONS THEY'RE SO SMOOTH YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE ROPE HE'S USING AND HE'S PLACING HIM ON HIS BELLY BEFORE HE STARTS TYING HIM UP *AND HE ACTUALLY GOES THROUGH THE MOTION OF TYING A KNOT AND TIGHTENING IT BEFORE STANDING UPRIGHT AGAIN OMG!!!!* Seriously, if they removed literally all animations from this game, it'd be a better game. I really don't give a fuck. Yeah the first time skinning a deer was cool. The second time was normal, and the third and few hundred thousand times following it were nothing but dreadfully boring to the point where I now always have my phone next to me while playing RDR2 because of how many boring sequences there are. They could've at the very least made an additional sped up animation for during combat sequences and such.

There's a small part of RDR2 that sums it all up for me, and is very similar to Jake's harmonica anecdote. There's a dude you meet early on in Valentine who recognises you from Blackwater, and you have the choice to let him fall to his death off of a cliff or save him. If you save him, he gives you a nice pen, which you (obviously) assume is an object of some importance, as our gamer brain informs us. Later on, one of the women at camp (might have been Molly, I don't know), says she wants to get back into writing, but that she lost her favourite pen and needs a replacement. Arthur tells her he'll keep an eye out for one. At this point, my gamer brain was like, "Oh shit, I can give her the pen I got from that dude. And if I hadn't have saved him, I may not have been able to fulfil her request, or at least have to find a pen elsewhere." I then realised there was no prompt to give her the pen, no matter how much I tried, and thought I must have encountered a glitch of some description. After going online and reading some message boards, it turned out that you had to loot a specific house that has a specific pen in it to give to her, and that the pen from the guy in Valentine has no known purpose and can just be sold. Yet again, a mini-mission that seems like it could have multiple outcomes and solutions is actually holding your hand and telling you that there is only one way to complete it. It's a frustrating gameplay choice. When a game like Phantom Pain, for all of its narrative faults, can present a player with seemingly endless options to solve problems in 2015, there should be no excuse for a game the scale of RDR2, with such an insane level of polish, to offer simple, linear, guided solutions in 2018.

@@snakeplissken111 or they make them as traditional linear action games. Because from what I've observed. The open world elements really only work when the story is about the "open world" the game is set in. You're experiencing multiple stories about the setting, the characters in it, the history and lore. Making the main story about the main character/s *_and_* putting in open world elements makes it highly vulnerable to ludonarrative dissonance. Where the story says you need to find your kidnapped son, but then you go off and do other activities completely unrelated or even detrimental activities to finding your son for hundreds of hours on end.

Because they _want_ you to take it slow in camp in an attempt to help you spend more time with the gang and experience all the little interactions that take place in order for you to get to know them better. Besides, they've long since patched it so that Arthur can walk faster through camp than he originally could; he may not be able to run when there, but it's not like he can only move at a snail's pace. If that's a game-breaking problem then perhaps this just isn't the right game for you, which is fine. Not everyone is going to like the deliberately slow gameplay elements in certain areas. The game is so restricting that the player can't even jog or sprint in camp, I agree that was very frustrating, but it wasn't what I disliked the most about the game. What disappointed me more than anything was the Camp system. It was such a good idea and an interesting concept for this type of game, I mean Jake explained in detail how good it could have been, but I was incredibly disappointed when I realized how pointless the camp system was. How it didn't matter at all how you treat members of the camp, if you donate, get resources, none of it matters. This also went into the online multiplayer, where the online camp was gimped as hell and lame. Although I haven't played it since it released, so maybe they made the camps better in multiplayer by now?

I remember watching this video, liking it and then forgetting about it. A few months ago I replayed RDR2 and now rewatching the video, I have the exact same thoughts on the game. I really tried to get immersed and play with a compass as well, downloaded some mods for extra realism, but the truth of the matter is that the base game just doesn't lend itself to that kind of roleplaying. There's no point to all the side content besides an achievement. And when they do go hard on the roleplaying, it's often in a very tedious way. I still remember having to keep the craft button pressed for minutes when making split point bullets because the game wants me to see the animation every single time. Just a ton of wasted potential.

I love this video. It greatly puts together many of the problems I have with this game. I would be okay with most of these problems existing, if only the RDR2 braindead community wasn't hell-bent on this game being "the perfect 10/10 game, where Rockstar thought of everything and it's this and that...". RDR2 is heavily flawed game where I feel like the developers actually haven't spent much time playing the game. Is it a great game? Yes. Did I have fun playing it? Yes. But I am tired of hearing how Rockstar did something great. Most of what they did is half-assed and often contradicts itself.

There was a moment that I had in Red Dead 1 that always stands out to me. It was really early in the game and I hadn't actually been to the canyon section on the north of the map yet. I approached the canyon on my horse and slowed to a stop as the name of the area showed up on screen. The ambient music was doing it's thing, and I heard the tell tale sound of a rattlesnake. Except I hadn't encountered a rattlesnake yet, so I thought it was just a part of the background music. Suddenly, my horse is dead, I'm confused and disoriented, and as I try to collect myself, I'm bitten by the snake and barely understand what the hell is going on. Then I finally see it, pull my gun and shoot the sucker. At that exact moment I had drawn the attention of bandits from inside the canyon. I barely survived the initial ambush and I spent the next half an hour desperately shooting my way through the canyon on foot, and frankly I fell in love with the game right then. It was so early in the game that I had this completely random and unique open world experience, and I couldn't wait to see what other wild and surprising situations might arise. And nothing like that ever really happened again. It was a great game, don't get me wrong, but nothing that Rockstar spoon-fed me from that moment forward ever matched that pure and total fluke of open world majesty. I would also like to see rockstar lean into fleshing out interactions through a more vibrant open world as well.

James Ziegenbalg red dead 1 does some things a lot better than red dead 2. Player choice in red dead 1 is just great. For example, when javier escualla flees the Mexican fort, you can shoot him, capture him, beat him up, etc. I actually decided to tie him up and throw him off of the nearby cliff, which actually wasted time because I then had to go and collect javier’s body to take to the Pinkertons... buuuuuuuuuuuut I was given the option to do that. If it was red dead 2 you would instantly be prompted to shoot javier, and if you did something slightly out of place you would have to restart from the last checkpoint
@TheMelMan4 жыл бұрын
I have very similar experiences with Red Dead Redemption. I also couldn't believe they made a game that good. So many random encounters and unscripted adventures in that game. Never had any of that again after we got to this new HD world of theirs that is meant to carbon copy scenes from movies that they saw and wanted to recreate.

I kept failing a mission fairly early on. The one where you're hiding in a barn. As soon as the barn started burning down I'd jump out the window (you know so i wouldn't DIE) and continue shooting. Apparently i was supposed to wait until the game prompted me to leave the fucking burning building at a specific time.
@DJWeapon85 жыл бұрын
That made no sense, honestly. Whether you jump out early or late it doesn't matter. _We still have to fight the guards._ Hell, that mission doesn't even have any bearing on the main story. So the excuse of "Its supposed to be scripted because its a story based game." is invalid.

I think the most frustrating thing, is how rockstar at its core, gave us games like the first red dead, Vice city and San Andreas. Games that are filled to the brim with things for the player to find, only for them to lose their way, and undermine the intellect of their core audience. I’m playing Vice city for the first time currently, and nobody told me I could deliver pizzas to get extra health, or about the hidden shotgun at the top of the parking structure. I just saw a pizza moped and wanted to play Spider-Man simulator, but the game rewarded me for completing them. It goes on deeper than that, but it’s just ultimately sad to see such great companies tarnished because of a lack of focus, or however many reasons there may be

Red Dead 2 has PLENTY of stuff like that. The game rewards your curiosity and exploration without prompting you all the time. It’s what makes the open world so great. If you see a location and really assess it, when you investigate it there’s a good chance that there’s something tangible to discover. They leave subtle visual cues and then you’ll get rewarded for exploring it with a unique visual or a collectible, easter egg or whatever else.

Couldn't agree more been playing Rockstar Games for about 17 years, I like to take the mission Lure given by Francis Mcreary in GTA IV as an example. The whole concept of the mission is to kill this supposed drug dealer in his apartment, once you arrive at the apartment you call Francis and he lets you know that there is a sniper rifle on the roof across his building. There are basically 3 options to conduct this mission. Option A (Casual Baby way) which is shooting the window and getting him to look out the window. Option B (Strategic) Shooting the satellite dish that connects to his TV and he will get up and try to fix it allowing you to kill him that way. My favorite option, Option C (Also Strategic) if you zoom in with the sniper rifle you see his home phone in the apartment if you look closely you can see the actual number to call his home phone. Once you call the phone he will answer it giving you the best line of sight on his head. Although these options don't drastically change the impact of the end state of this mission (killing the drug dealer) it makes you feel like you have control of the situation and are more free to create your own experiences.

yep as a Rockstar fanboy and having heard what Jakey said I understand and I think we've already felt those frustration its just we're so mesmerised by other things that Rockstar do well etc visual details,open world/sandbox... one aspect Jakey was probably not aware of... the game scripting engine is one of the main culprit why this happens... in the game scripting engine you could see why mission designers would be stuck to these "limitations" or are forced to make missions as such(im not saying you totally cant but it encourages you to make as such)... the same engine is what makes those frustrating Cops wanted system worst..etc Cops don't have accurate visual sensors..theres no way to program those cops to only add wanted when they actually see you ducking behind a solid object..they detect you are in a radius the cops sees you instead of the cops having realistic vision...theres a lot more to rant a bout this.... I know I know, it would be taxing on the hardware... but I'm sure there are ways to reduce other overheads to achieve this kind of gameplay..
