I liked this game. The cheap VHS-look this game has makes it so much more authentic. The gangs, all the way from the undersupplied Hoods up to the elite Cerberus all feel distinctive. The game does not have a lot of story, but it still manages to build a very bleak setting and an exciting narrative. Missions like the one with the news reporter really add to the charm of this game. That‘s why I was so disappointed with Manhunt 2, it tried way too hard to be disturbing and grotesque.

On the pc version, you can set traffic and pedestrian density to 1(as low as it'll go) and it's got a much more eerie feel to it. www.gtainside.com/downloads/picr/2014-11/1415881454_1415728140_2.jpg

Manhunt is one of the most unique and terrifying games I've ever played, and it's rightfully earned a place as one of my top horror games. The fear doesn't come from zombies, or ghosts, or some other fantastical element. It comes from the reality of just how depraved humans can be, and that's incredibly chilling on a deeper level. I can't remember where it came from, but there was a piece of lore that said that after the events of the game, the journalist was picked up by some cops wandering around some city streets in a dazed state. When questioned about it, it turned out that seeing the pure evil that she did severely damaged he on a mental level and she didn't understand how people could willfully do things like that, and I think that's the perfect example of the insanity that is this game. I miss this era of Rockstar because they were, well, actual rockstars. They didnt care what people thought and they took risks. Now they've settled into a steady groove of only releasing one game every several years and milking online modes with microtransactions. In a way they've gotten lazy, and that really is a shame.

I was scared. Let alone the harrowing soundtrack in my ears. It’s now one of my favorites. Now Manhunt 2.. what a joke. Pr0n shops and theaters, red light districts and little characteristics in the gangs. It’s like they preyed on the gross, hedonistic interests of guys like Taxi Driver but sold it under the Manhunt franchise. I do hope they do a third installment though. It would be very intriguing to see what they could do and open people’s eyes again like they did with MH1. I mean, a game about a snuff film.. I’m sure people wigged. This video just perfect as a tribute to such a misunderstood gem of a game. There is a LOT of great videos paying homage to Rockstar Games' Manhunt, but nearly all of them never mention the music. It has an incredibly dark magic to it. And to paraphrase Brad Fiedel, the composer of The Terminator and T-2, he said: "When music compliments the visuals so well, or in this case, the gameplay, the audience are not always sure if it's music you're hearing, or if it's part of what's going on". It makes for some PROPER eerie, or intense and very memorable atmosphere. Just like any good horror, it's got tension, and suspense. I mean, in most games, even some horror games, the player character is often at least quite over powered. But in Manhunt, even when you get access to guns, it always makes you feel as though you're on the verge of becoming the prey, so there's no room for that sort of complacency, therefore it makes you think and plan your route or strategy. It's incredibly engaging, you know, and not always in a nice way, for obvious reasons 😐 Also, that analogy "Rockstar left no vein un-severed" that's awful, but so fitting considering the source material. I'd love if Rokstar made a new game, much like the original. But damn, would it get some backlash... But seriously, if a third game was to happen, there should be a quick news message to parents of younger people who play games. "Games are rated a certain age for a f*cking reason!" 😅🤭😉 Like parents need to be told that though in 2022... 🥴

I think you’re absolutely right and I wish you weren’t. The market has changed and video games were really established in the 2000’s but not like they are now, they were still niche to some extent and the industry giants of today were willing to support more experimental games. You did a nice job putting this video together! Gave you a thumbs up. I can see that you’re fond of Manhunt, and you made good points about it! However, there are some places where I must disagree with you. For a class, I actually wrote a paper about Manhunt and talked about the gangs and their relevance to modern times. And I’m so glad that you mentioned that. It’s foreshadowing in a disturbing way and it’s painfully close to home... it gives me chills. In my opinion, Manhunt doesn’t glorify violence, it does the opposite. Sure, Starkweather praises you for performing the nastiest executions, and there is a rating system, but to me, they aren’t meant to make you feel good, but the opposite. Starkweather gets off to the murder, and the sounds and visuals of the executions are realistically gross, both intending to nauseate or repulse the player in my opinion. And Rockstar knew what they were making was horrible - why would they make a game that glorifies violence if they didn’t like how its violence made them feel? All of these things lead me to believe that Manhunt doesn’t glorify violence, and that that wasn’t Rockstar’s intent. It paints violence as an ugly thing. Not that many people see it this way, but Manhunt has a deep storyline. There are different types of villains who all give it complexity. When I first played it, I found myself immersed in the game’s world because of the story and characters. It’s a dystopian universe that shows the player the world’s dark side, which you mentioned. But underneath it all are mysteries that reside under a watery surface. Manhunt made me ask questions about the characters and the world that we live in. There’s so much there that sparks my morbid fascination. Other than the atmosphere and soundtrack, this also makes Manhunt more than a video game about violence. It’s about a world where human beings are dehumanized and/or exploited for personal gain. The rating system to me just adds to the game’s film theme. The quality of the film is relevant to those who are involved in the snuff ring and watch its contents. Cash doesn’t enjoy the murder. There isn’t any dialogue that suggests he does. If anything, he’s only driven to murder for freedom, and even more so when he wants to stop Starkweather for hurting him and his family. He is clearly detached from the sadism. To me, the execution system shows his lethality, and the more gruesome executions are his attempts to give Starkweather what he wants. If his kills are more violent, and Starkweather is happy, maybe he can get out of the situation sooner. Also, good point about the Journalist. She wants fame out of exposing Starkweather. Unlike the other characters though (with the exception of Cash), she’s not a bystander. And I get a sense of justice from her, personally. In the interview audio that was released, it’s implied that she doesn’t trust the government and it is corrupt. It was intense to listen to. Honestly I think she wanted justice, but maybe fame was a priority. You also said that Manhunt 2 is senseless/mindless murder that became what the first game wanted to avoid. But I disagree. Danny is a character that introduced remorse to the Manhunt series. The first person Leo tells him to kill causes him to puke, and at one point, he tells him that he’s tired of killing. This shows that MH2 isn’t a mindless murder simulator. There isn’t murder just for the hell of it. There is murder because it’s a tool that the villain uses to get his way. It’s used to manipulate Danny, and it shows the impact of an experiment gone wrong. Danny does it for the same reason Cash kills for Starkweather. They both want out of their situations and have their own personal goals that cause discordance between them and the villains. At least in MH2, we can relate to Danny. As humans, we want our efforts to work and not turn into something we didn’t anticipate. Leo is sadistic, and he enjoys watching and committing murder. But he doesn’t like that. In the Dr. Whyte session video, he says that he wants to think “normally”, but he also shows distaste for the Project because of what they did to him. He doesn’t want to have murder constantly on his mind. He wants revenge, which is why he pulls strings in MH2. This also makes MH2 more than a murder simulator because both characters have experienced similar situations with the Project, but they go about it different ways. Danny wants his past, while Leo wants the freedom to control the future. I’m just curious to hear your thoughts on Manhunt 2 and why you feel that it’s a meaninglessly violent game. In my opinion, both games have meaning, but I’d love to try and understand your perspective!

I 2nd this!!!!!! Yessss!!! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 Also, Manhunt 2 is just as a great of a storyline and deep psychology horror as the first. Albeit different and not the same.... flaws here and there... there is so much more to MH2 that you and I have have dug into! MH2 is so much more in depth than what most people can't see!

After the events on manhunt 1 the journalist that exposes starkweathers snuff film suffered a personal disorder and went crazy. There's this one interview that can be found in KZbin where she is being committed inside an asylum in carcer city, in this interview she talks about her career and mentioned both of her parents are dead, she also mentioned cash that's he's still alive but the doctor that's interviewing her doesn't believe anything she says because no one has seen cash or spoken to him since the day he got executed. The journalist is still in the asylum in the present day,meanwhile cash is still on the run, however according to the wiki of the game he created a fake identity of himself so he can settle a new life but his activities in the present day are unknown

@PhantomSavage3 жыл бұрын
If they ever remade or rebooted this game (though that's probably not likely to happen given the original's controversy), I always thought manhunt could benefit from a multiple ending system that changes depending how you play. I always thought it was interesting they never really told the player much at all about Cash's backstory other than the fact he starts the game at the end of death row. His family gets killed off by the director later, but with no voice and limited facial animations, you can't really tell how Cash truly feels about that... It always gave you the eerie feeling that you weren't sure if you were playing an even bigger monster than the guy doing all this to you. If they were to truly remake this, I think it'd be interesting to flesh out Cash's personality and backstory a bit that changes depending on how you play. If play the game somewhat normally, killing mostly only the NPCs in your way with a variation of kill types, maybe you find out Cash was only on death row for a crime of passion or revenge.. like he killed a couple of guys in a brutal bar fight, or maybe Cash killed some bad guys for a loved one or in defense. If you play the game as a pacifist (or complete the game with the minimal amount of kills), maybe you find out Cash never really was a murderer, maybe he was framed or they convicted the wrong guy because of false evidence and corruption. Finally... if you play the game like a psycho, *all* NPCs in every level, exclusively gruesome kills, maybe you find out Cash really did kill something like 20 people or more, and is truly a fearsome and monstrous force to contend with, making him feel more like an embodiment of violence like Michael Myers as opposed to a normal person.. There's lots of cool things you could do with a remake, especially if you added in an injury and gore system like Last of Us or Blood Trail, and quadrupled the number of kill animations you can get.

For what it’s worth, the rating system does give you rewards. You need 3* on a mission to unlock bonus themed game modes and concept art, and you have to beat levels on the highest difficulty in order to achieve a 5* rating which, if I remember correctly, 5*ing 2 back to back levels allows you to utilize specific cheat codes which are displayed in two parts on the aforementioned artwork, like “invisibility” and “Fully Equipped (All Available weapons on that mission in your inventory from the start.)” So you absolutely earn rewards for those gruesome kills, not being spotted, and finishing missions quickly.
