I liked this game. The cheap VHS-look this game has makes it so much more authentic. The gangs, all the way from the undersupplied Hoods up to the elite Cerberus all feel distinctive. The game does not have a lot of story, but it still manages to build a very bleak setting and an exciting narrative. Missions like the one with the news reporter really add to the charm of this game. That‘s why I was so disappointed with Manhunt 2, it tried way too hard to be disturbing and grotesque.

I loved playing The Warriors, I think it’s what made me good at Manhunt when I first started playing in 2019. All the shadows you can hide in really help 😂 I was so used to sneaking around Turnbulls and running away from cops that I didn’t find it that troubling to sneak my way through both Manhunt games. The first game offered a better challenge I must say

I've been saying for years I would love to see Manhunt and Manhunt 2 released as a remastered, uncensored and bundled Director's Cut on current gen systems. Manhunt remains one of the most ambient and unsettling game experiences I've ever had and I loved every minute of it. I never played more than the first ten minutes of Manhunt 2 due to the censorship filter and if I were a game reviewer would have refused to rate a censored version of the game.

The only problem is, that the people that were making manhunt 2 suffered from trauma and depression from designing the gory kills. Imagine how much worse would it be for them when the graphics would be 10x more realistic. I wouldn't be surprised if someone commited suicide after making a remaster of manhunt 2.

Absolutely love this game. I was used to GTA and most of Rockstar’s tongue-in-cheek personality like Lazlow and TBOGT. So when I stepped foot in a gray and bleak city with blood and mangled bodies.. I was scared. Let alone the harrowing soundtrack in my ears. It’s now one of my favorites. Now Manhunt 2.. what a joke. Pr0n shops and theaters, red light districts and little characteristics in the gangs. It’s like they preyed on the gross, hedonistic interests of guys like Taxi Driver but sold it under the Manhunt franchise. I do hope they do a third installment though. It would be very intriguing to see what they could do and open people’s eyes again like they did with MH1. I mean, a game about a snuff film.. I’m sure people wigged. That’s not a conversation over lunch you have haha, Jesus! Awesome video.

the theme song alone is awesome...the rest f the score fits each scene perfectly.....it was cool to see R* make their own score again and they nailed it that was the best part of the original GTA, the music cus they totally nailed what was going on with music on most radio stations 97/98 whenever you were getting the last of the hair metal, a lot of gangsta rap, country wasn't that big in the big cities so miss there but their joke on the genre was funny, and the double tap of house and the emerging trance rounding things out plus pop radio their pop radio was awesome, real pop radio sucked in 94 let alone 98..... think about it in 98 for metal we just got megadeth cryptic writings in 97, metallica's reload in 97 and pantera's great southern trendkill in 96 around the same time Keoki's biggest album had released disco deathrace 2000, dust brother's Fight Club score was big, we hadn't gotten to run Lola run yet but that score sounded very similar to GTA's techno in rap gangstar released moment of truth in 98, wu tang ckan released wu tang forever in 97, snoop released the doggfather in 96 and around the same time Warren G released regulate G Funk Era, I wanna say that was 96 but it coulda been as early as 94 lol point is a lot of what was going on in music R* just nailed to a tee.....the rock was more like Motley crue and Poison....maybe Ratt...lol definitely some ratt vibes to it but it was all cool and how can you not speed down the freeway and try to jump the busted bridge listening to driven in my fast car, you can be my lady....you can drive me crazy! good gods it was like a really good Bryan Adams song in a way i really miss that aspect of GTA, the licensed stuff is fun but the more original parodies are kinda better but you know the same guys who did the rock music in GTA also did the Lovefist band in Vice City?? true factoid kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWfXapV7msp8fMU

Manhunt is one of the most unique and terrifying games I've ever played, and it's rightfully earned a place as one of my top horror games. The fear doesn't come from zombies, or ghosts, or some other fantastical element. It comes from the reality of just how depraved humans can be, and that's incredibly chilling on a deeper level. I can't remember where it came from, but there was a piece of lore that said that after the events of the game, the journalist was picked up by some cops wandering around some city streets in a dazed state. When questioned about it, it turned out that seeing the pure evil that she did severely damaged he on a mental level and she didn't understand how people could willfully do things like that, and I think that's the perfect example of the insanity that is this game. I miss this era of Rockstar because they were, well, actual rockstars. They didnt care what people thought and they took risks. Now they've settled into a steady groove of only releasing one game every several years and milking online modes with microtransactions. In a way they've gotten lazy, and that really is a shame.

Well...The Game 'Manhunt' itself is treated as a work of Mr. Nasty. So I guess he is still selling the 'VHS' called 'Manhunt' to us - the player. And it includes the news of the execution and the news of the killing of Mr. Starkweather. So this all is part of the tape Mr. Nasty is selling. Sadly he is not referred to in Manhunt 2. I just hope that some day we will see a Manhunt 3 bringing back Mr. Nasty, as he presents us his new work.

One very nice touch of Manhunt that I really like that seems to barely be talked about is how many of the characters and npc's are either named after or alude to IRL serial killers. It actually somewhat explains what James Earl Cash might have done to get death row because he is named after James Earl Ray, the fugitive who assassinated Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

I like how the threat are just people and the way they might sometimes shriek in excitement after they spot you and start coming at you has always sent chills down my spine. One of the darkest, most chilling games I've ever played but so brilliant and immersive. I'm also glad you brought up the music and sound, I love the dark ambient music that this game comes equipped with, it really adds to the unnerving atmosphere. For me Red Ded Redemption 2 is their greatest achievement but Manhunt remains right up there as one of their greatest too and is definitely high up in my all time favourites. This video just perfect as a tribute to such a misunderstood gem of a game. There is a LOT of great videos paying homage to Rockstar Games' Manhunt, but nearly all of them never mention the music. It has an incredibly dark magic to it. And to paraphrase Brad Fiedel, the composer of The Terminator and T-2, he said: "When music compliments the visuals so well, or in this case, the gameplay, the audience are not always sure if it's music you're hearing, or if it's part of what's going on". It makes for some PROPER eerie, or intense and very memorable atmosphere. Just like any good horror, it's got tension, and suspense. I mean, in most games, even some horror games, the player character is often at least quite over powered. But in Manhunt, even when you get access to guns, it always makes you feel as though you're on the verge of becoming the prey, so there's no room for that sort of complacency, therefore it makes you think and plan your route or strategy. It's incredibly engaging, you know, and not always in a nice way, for obvious reasons 😐 Also, that analogy "Rockstar left no vein un-severed" that's awful, but so fitting considering the source material. I'd love if Rokstar made a new game, much like the original. But damn, would it get some backlash... But seriously, if a third game was to happen, there should be a quick news message to parents of younger people who play games. "Games are rated a certain age for a f*cking reason!" 😅🤭😉 Like parents need to be told that though in 2022... 🥴

Manhunt would be 10 times scarier if it was remastered on newer consoles with modern looks and more refined gameplay but as it stands manhunt is one of the most twisted games ever but it’s not twisted for the sake of being so, the grotesque violence has meaning and I think that’s what makes it such a memorable game. @@jaytakajeremiahtisdale2042 Well Manhunt 2 got AO and they censored it so it could get M. There is no sense in making softer and tame Manhunt game. Manhunt is grindhouse anthology of violent urban stories and kill or be killed situations happening in dark and twisted settings. If you think that Manhunt game made in RAGE engine would get anything less than AO, you must be joking. I love Manhunt, but I know that chances for new game are close to nothing. When political correctness will perish then we might get new one, but still Take2 order R* around and for them what makes the most amount of money counts and Manhunt never broke any sales records.

You did a nice job putting this video together! Gave you a thumbs up. I can see that you’re fond of Manhunt, and you made good points about it! However, there are some places where I must disagree with you. For a class, I actually wrote a paper about Manhunt and talked about the gangs and their relevance to modern times. And I’m so glad that you mentioned that. It’s foreshadowing in a disturbing way and it’s painfully close to home... it gives me chills. In my opinion, Manhunt doesn’t glorify violence, it does the opposite. Sure, Starkweather praises you for performing the nastiest executions, and there is a rating system, but to me, they aren’t meant to make you feel good, but the opposite. Starkweather gets off to the murder, and the sounds and visuals of the executions are realistically gross, both intending to nauseate or repulse the player in my opinion. And Rockstar knew what they were making was horrible - why would they make a game that glorifies violence if they didn’t like how its violence made them feel? All of these things lead me to believe that Manhunt doesn’t glorify violence, and that that wasn’t Rockstar’s intent. It paints violence as an ugly thing. Not that many people see it this way, but Manhunt has a deep storyline. There are different types of villains who all give it complexity. When I first played it, I found myself immersed in the game’s world because of the story and characters. It’s a dystopian universe that shows the player the world’s dark side, which you mentioned. But underneath it all are mysteries that reside under a watery surface. Manhunt made me ask questions about the characters and the world that we live in. There’s so much there that sparks my morbid fascination. Other than the atmosphere and soundtrack, this also makes Manhunt more than a video game about violence. It’s about a world where human beings are dehumanized and/or exploited for personal gain. The rating system to me just adds to the game’s film theme. The quality of the film is relevant to those who are involved in the snuff ring and watch its contents. Cash doesn’t enjoy the murder. There isn’t any dialogue that suggests he does. If anything, he’s only driven to murder for freedom, and even more so when he wants to stop Starkweather for hurting him and his family. He is clearly detached from the sadism. To me, the execution system shows his lethality, and the more gruesome executions are his attempts to give Starkweather what he wants. If his kills are more violent, and Starkweather is happy, maybe he can get out of the situation sooner. Also, good point about the Journalist. She wants fame out of exposing Starkweather. Unlike the other characters though (with the exception of Cash), she’s not a bystander. And I get a sense of justice from her, personally. In the interview audio that was released, it’s implied that she doesn’t trust the government and it is corrupt. It was intense to listen to. Honestly I think she wanted justice, but maybe fame was a priority. You also said that Manhunt 2 is senseless/mindless murder that became what the first game wanted to avoid. But I disagree. Danny is a character that introduced remorse to the Manhunt series. The first person Leo tells him to kill causes him to puke, and at one point, he tells him that he’s tired of killing. This shows that MH2 isn’t a mindless murder simulator. There isn’t murder just for the hell of it. There is murder because it’s a tool that the villain uses to get his way. It’s used to manipulate Danny, and it shows the impact of an experiment gone wrong. Danny does it for the same reason Cash kills for Starkweather. They both want out of their situations and have their own personal goals that cause discordance between them and the villains. At least in MH2, we can relate to Danny. As humans, we want our efforts to work and not turn into something we didn’t anticipate. Leo is sadistic, and he enjoys watching and committing murder. But he doesn’t like that. In the Dr. Whyte session video, he says that he wants to think “normally”, but he also shows distaste for the Project because of what they did to him. He doesn’t want to have murder constantly on his mind. He wants revenge, which is why he pulls strings in MH2. This also makes MH2 more than a murder simulator because both characters have experienced similar situations with the Project, but they go about it different ways. Danny wants his past, while Leo wants the freedom to control the future. I’m just curious to hear your thoughts on Manhunt 2 and why you feel that it’s a meaninglessly violent game. In my opinion, both games have meaning, but I’d love to try and understand your perspective!

I don't think I ever gave you praise for this retrospective when you uploaded it last year. Between this video and the one from Liam Triforce, I'd say this one of the two best retrospective videos for the game. I do have one critique for it though: Lionel Starkweather was actually a Hollywood director, not Vinewood. A misconception with the 3D Universe of GTA is that the fictional cities replace their real-life counterparts when that rule only applies to the HD Universe. Otherwise, Miami would not have been mentioned by name twice in GTA 3, once in Vice City, and Hollywood wouldn't have been mentioned in Starkweather's bio in Manhunt as well as through Jimmy Hopkins in Bully. That's my only critique there. Other than that, I loved this video.

I love how Manhunt made me feel uneasy for the killings because that's what it's suppose to do, and it worked. But Last of Us 2 was meant to make you do the same thing, but the violence in that game is the only fun part about it.

I get a macabre kick from the plastic bag executions, not gonna lie. But you're right in that they feel like a real struggle, not romanticised in a movie kind of way. I... am not allowed to talk about TLOU2. Part of my probation.

I want them to go back to the original Storyline from part 1 and involve Danny Lamb as well. If you read the manual that came with Manhunt 1, you would have seen that, while Starkweather was the Director, the true "boss" of the snuff film ring is a producer by the name of "Mr. Nasty". I picture James Earl Cash drinking himself away, in some other country like mexico or something (since he will forever be a wanted man for all the killing he did and the fact that he was supposed to be an inmate on death row to be executed, anyway). So the story begins with him distraught and horrified with himself for all the killing he did and how Starkweather murdered his family, despite following his instructions. Eventually, he gets contacted by the reporter from Carcer City who is in a position of power (maybe mayor or something?) and tells him about all the good she's done to clean up her town, but however, she's discovered that Starkweather was not the Snuff-film head honcho, in fact he never was...and she ends up finding a lead on this "Mr. Nasty" guy. Cash having been enraged from all the memories of the horrific events he was forced to go through, takes off to find and kill this sick bastard, to end the snuff ring once and for all...and for himself. However, due to Mr. Nasty being made extremely rich from all this horrible snuff, he also ended up being a key contributer/funder/donator (like how many filthy rich hollywood producers are) to the "Project" organization from Manhunt 2. Somehow Daniel gets wind of this as well, by the same person who sent him the note in the Good ending from Manhunt 2 that read "if you want to know your past follow this address" and due to the project making Danny into a killer and killing his wife and child, sets off to seek revenge against ANYONE who aided the Project (In this case, Mr. Nasty). The interaction between Danny and Cash could play out like how Leo and Danny interacted with eachother in part 2. They could end up meeting together by both of them getting kidnapped and explaining eachothers situation, torwards the middle of the story. Have half the game being played with Danny and the other half with Cash, give them their own unique skills and attributes and BANG, Manhunt 3 is back with my great plot!!!

@@sumandsubstance7881 That would be pretty cool too. Especially if it didn't leave so much to the imagination. Might sound like a weird thing to say but aside from bloodstains and decapitation you'd never be able to tell how the hunters were executed after you do stealth kills. Too bad the ESRB would go nuts and Sony (And Microsoft/Nintendo) don't allow AO games.

This game is a 'Masterpiece!'...and by that i mean, not only was it so intense that for every second you feared for your life, but every OTHER second was spent wondering 'how brutal should i make this?'....if you played this game or GTA3 during its infancy, it was around the time of Columbine...I, personally, felt that these games were such a great mental relief of expressing my 'teen-angst' and anger issues, but still sometimes felt morally wrong about the choices i made in those games... i played them as my own personal 'anger management'...but on the other end of the spectrum..."CAN video games influence violence?" ...absolutely! ...especially alot of these war games!... make it seem like its fun to kill with no consequences, aside from getting killed and starting back into a loop of kill/killed...a young mind couldnt process.

I heard somewhere that Manhunt takes place in the same universe as the Grand Theft Auto games. Not sure if it's true. It would make for a fun movie. Narratively, it would make more sense if Pigsy broke loose because Cash set him free or he saw Cash and decided to escape rather than coincidence.

I can really agree with the sentiment here. Manhunt is experimental, even if Rockstar was totally conscious of the ruckus and feathers they were rumbling. You play and go forward, even if you don't think you should, every character is moved by based emotion, and not the kind we consider pretty or dignified. We only go forward for the sake of curiosity, pride, rage, as Cash. The others are not much better. No values or virtues are displayed here. A bit too grim, a bit too miserable maybe, but still a great experience and study. The review should've touched a bit more on the technical aspects I think, a bit of the jank, but also on the ruthless strategy we employ during play. And I also don't think political anarchists can be put in the same category as psychopaths' and neonazis XD But I would think in this world of trends and tiktoks, a study in Manhunt 3 would be dope!
