rosey lo I must correct you here, but it's even better than you thought. Mickey Thomas back in that day had a minimum 4 octave vocal range, maybe 5. And he did it all with NO falsetto. It was pure, full head voice. Just like Steve Perry, Robert Plant, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate, Klaus Meine, and others. It makes these men's voices even that much more amazing to me. ☺

Micky Thomas' voice is so unbelievable. How he hits those high notes, I'll never understand. God-given talent for sure!
@drdre43973 жыл бұрын
While some of it could be talent it has a lot more to do with decades of practice and discipline. No musician is born great... Yes some can be naturally gifted in composing or song writing. But you need to put many thankless hours into practicing so you can communicate those musical ideas in your head. To be able to think of something and play it/sing it instantly the way you were thinking of it takes years. Mickey Thomas has the notes in his range as he is a tenor, but to be able to hit them consistently and with good pitch was not a god given gift but years of hardwork. I only bring this up because Thousands of hours of hard work and discipline should not be swept under the rug of "Born with talent".
@davidr16762 жыл бұрын
I remember liking these songs, still do, but maybe about 30 years ago I couldn't stand most vocalists (male) with such high pitch. It isn't any sort of "sexist" thing as much as it is a different approach in the music styles and somewhat the way the instruments might be played or tuned. Saw Kanter's Starship in summer 92 and I loved that. Jack was back, Pete Sears, Prarie Prince, and Papa John Creech with a lovely young lady on vocals instead of the great Grace Slick.

I agree you had to compete for record deal, followed by radio air play. Most today's acts just dance around on stage to distract the audience from their in ability to sing and/or play. Very few have talent are one hit wonders or short time in the spotlight, then fade away.

One group that really began the sterilization of music was Devo. I couldn't stand them back then...and I STILL can't stand 'em! Computers to make music...that's not music, that's computer-generated TRASH!!!!!

Steve Walsh in his Kansas heyday was also an incredible vocalist --- listen to 'Leftoverture', absolutely excellent singing! One of my all-time favourites.

Helgard Kwiatkoski, I saw them back when Steve would do handstands on the keyboard.

Dang! Living with these guys around the Bay Area was fun. Incredible voice and musicians. All of them. I miss the old days with these guys and their music. At least Mickey kept it going and at 71+ he's still giving his all. Ansley Dunbar laid down this groove on the album. I still have their very first vinal issued.

This song made my last year in the Air Force at Hanscom AFB in Mass. bearable! Dean Barcomb and I would sing this song all the time because it's a love song that ROCKS HARD!!! I then saw them and the Cars at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in NY and they ROCKED HARD!!! The guitar in this song is OUTSTANDING! Grace looks GOOD as usual! Thank you Jefferson Starship for the YEARS of OUTSTANDING ROCK!!!

DAMN, ITS NOT FALSETTO!!! I've sang this stuff for years, mostly journey, sound garden, mariah Carey, Nazareth. It's not falsetto, you would trash your voice doing falsetto with that much power. Smj
@eevee2esponfan Жыл бұрын
It’s definitely not falsetto…I used to be able to do a falsetto, and what Mickey does is pure voice, pure power

In 1978 my mother and I went to her cousin’s wedding in Sonoma county. A small affair with maybe fifty people there. In a back room there was a piano. I wandered off to play since I was the only kid at the service. In walks a long haired dude. He sits next to me and we play some random stuff. I am eleven. He is Pete Sears. Earlier my mother mentioned that the “Miracles” group would be there. We then went out in to the backyard to a huge studio where there was an impromptu jam. Decades later I was in San Gregorio California to see The Tubes and GE Smith with about two hundred people. They announce that Sears is there. He remembered our little jam. I have never told anyone this story. Not even my kids.
