We purchased our Rockwood Geo Pro, 20BHS in January of 2020, and have been living and traveling in it since June. This is our brutally honest review of Geo Pro initial quality after traveling over 6,000 miles and 11 states.
I’ve got several purposes for this video, but my primary goal is to help you find the RV which is the absolute best fit for your situation. That’s the bottom line really, as the Geo Pro is a great little travel trailer, but I realize they may not be a good fit for everyone’s intended lifestyle.
Next, I would like to promote the high-quality details which the Geo Pro has and shares with other models, brands, and manufacturers; details like Azdel, Aluminum Framing, and Dexter Torflex Axles. These quality materials, manufacturing processes, and components can be game-changers in the longevity of a travel trailer and the ownership experience. Any rig which shares these same features will be better because of them.
Lastly, while I wish my ownership experience has been 100% positive, it has not been. So, my goal with sharing the things which could be improved is to provide valuable buyer education and market feedback to Rockwood & Forest River, which will ultimately help them to build an even better product. Rockwood produces a good product and its quality is improving every year, but there are still opportunities for improvement.
I hope you find this video informative and helpful. It was a labor of love. If you are in the market for a new RV, it’s my wish that you find the perfect fit for your unique needs and that your new RV is a vehicle that transports you to epic experiences and priceless memories!
Thanks For Watching!!
All the best,
Ben Finch

Hi. Thanks for the detailed video. I'm curious if you were able to communicate with the manufacturer about the "defects" such as the screws coming loose etc. and if so, were they receptive to your feedback and willing to research making improvements?
@CrowdFreeRV

Hi @Philip Kauppinen! I did not communicate with them directly. I do know that factory representatives watch people’s videos and they monitor forum groups for the purposes of collecting feedback. I’m going to be up at the factory soon. I plan to check in regarding quality improvements. They haven’t resumed factory tours yet, but I’ll see what I can do. Stay tuned… Thanks for watching & commenting!

Hello @Meditative Essence! Thanks for your kind comment! It means a lot 🙂 One thing to consider in the current production climate - I just spoke with the Rockwood factory yesterday. The have been able to keep parts in stock and run a full 5 day per week production schedule. Some manufacturers are running 2-3 days per week due to parts shortages. This is something to look into if you special order a rig vs. buying one from dealer stock.

A tip from an old master mechanic (me) about screws coming out. If you have a screw that just won't cooperate about staying tight, perhaps a pop-rivet (sometimes with added small washers on both sides of the hole, if you can get to those areas) may be a more permanent fix like where your stove screws were. But keep in mind if you ever have to disassemble an item that's been riveted, you'll have to drill out the rivets so consider that before riveting. Good idea on tire upgrade, 'margin' on everything is a good idea, tow capacity, tires, battery amperage, all of it.

Great, info-packed video. I plan on purchasing the 19BH without the slide next year. It will just be me living in it, so I don't need the extra dining space. Plus, not having a slide is one less thing to break. (I know you said that you haven't had any) problems) I decided on this brand and model because of all the great features I wanted anyway like the solar, the wifi booster, the shower miser, the dual propane tanks, etc. Really glad I watched the whole video and I feel much more confident in my decision. Thank You!

@CrowdFreeRV
@CrowdFreeRV 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s an unfortunate reality. There’s still much opportunity for quality improvement. My attitude is this: 1. Be aware & buy the best rig you can. 2. Celebrate the advancements in quality. These advancements are not across the board, but are there with some brands. These advancements (like Azdel, aluminum framing and vacuum bonding) are complete game changers. 3. Keep the pressure on for continuous improvement.

Something you can do with screw holes, that usually works if they are stripped, is use some epoxy mixed with metal filings, use a release agent like wax on the screw. Just make sure the material you are repairing is thick enough. The metal filings reinforce the epoxy to the point where you can actually drill and tap it. May want to check if there is any issue with needing a certain type of epoxy that is particularly suited to Azdel or not, any wood items or alum items will be OK with a 5min epoxy. In wood and alum, you cand also use a rivnut, which needs a biigger hole, but, it expands into the material when tightened like a rivet, and then you can use whatever size and thred pitch screw as necc. They use them on fibreglas to install light brackets, mirror brackets etc.

Thanks for the very detailed video, I’ve watched many KZbin videos on different makes and models of campers and I always come back to the Geo Pro. I do realize very rv is going to have its issues, but I still think for the price point the Geo Pro is the route I’m going with. I really like the 19fb with the Murphy bed. It just checks all the boxes for what I’m looking for. I’m just really amazed with the negative comments about the geo pro by these so to speak experts. I just laughed at the ignorance, and most complaints are usually from operator error. Like one I read about the Dexter axle being junk because if you speed around a corner and hit a curb you can’t get it realigned. Well slow down and don’t run up over a curb lol. Anyway great video thanks again.

I bought a new 25 foot 2020 Airstream in the Spring of 2020. The first thing I did was remove all the screws inside and out I could and put Locktite on all of them. So far after over 10K miles nothing has come loose. I suggest everybody do this task. Be aware that if they did all you expect then the trailer would cost much more because this would slow down production. It is a sad reality in the RV business model.

We are in the DFW area as well. Just bought a 2021 GeoPro 20BHS, this video was very informative and we did notice a couple differences they made in the past year of production. Maybe we will see you both on the road sometime. The only thing you didn't quite address that we have questions on....is our A/C. The controls on it seem quite basic and if they just added a digital thermostat or had the option for a remote for the A/C, that would be a game changer as well.
@CrowdFreeRV
@CrowdFreeRV 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @kimelewis! I felt the same as you about the A/C controls. I also think a digital control would be an upgrade from than the simple dial controls. After living in our Geo Pro for the last 1.5 years, it's not the controls that I’d really like improved, it's the noise. Specifically, when the compressor kicks in with a loud “thump” it wakes me up at night. If I ever replace or upgrade the a/c, I'm going to look at installing a Coleman Mach 10 NDQ (non ducted quiet) I know overall this unit is quieter and I'm also curious if the compressor is quieter when kicking in. Thanks for watching & commenting!

Purchased this trailer beginning of this year. Have taken it on multiple week long trips and thousands of miles. The four of us are beyond comfortable in it. So far I only have two complaints with the trailer. First was and easy fix. One battery just isn't enough. Went with 2 6Vs and it's more than enough now. The second was on the slide out side. The wheel well is open and doesn't connect to the side of the trailer. Driving in mud/snow or even just road grim can get thrown up onto the side of the trailer. Also inside if the same wheel well moisture can easily get into the slideout wall if not sealed properly. Spent about 20 minutes and a tube of exterior silicone on it. Probably going to be one of those yearly maintenance things I keep an eye on. As far as screws coming out and curtains falling down I have not seen that yet. It will happen, things break (especially if you have kids 🤣) just fix it move on and enjoy the adventures.

We are 8 months into owning are Geo Pro 19fd. The biggest upgrade we've done is changing the drawer and door handles. I kept cutting my legs on the lower Door & Drawer handles. We went to a rounded curved handles. And our Journey totals= 9 trips totaling a whopping under 300 miles. 200 - 250 bringing it back from FL west coast to FL east coast. Edit - i forgot, the exterior shower/ spray, notice where the hose enters the wall. Large hole i cut a piece of styrofoam and calked around it. I still can feed in, just not as open - bugs. Also we added curved shower /tub splash guards to keep water from escaping. And with us being in SE Florida my wife made a interior cover for the shower skylight. It has dropped the blazing heat from entering both stored and while in use.

What a great video! My husband and I purchased a Forest River product and it honestly was just poorly made. I believe that Forest River makes their products cheaply because of more probability in the end. Also, their customer service is so BAD! In the end the dealer and the manufacture do not care which is sad no matter how much money you spent. In the end we sold the Forest River product and purchased a Grand Design. I can't tell you enough what a huge difference a Grand Design truly is. I am not saying that we will never have any issues with the Grand Design, but I can say that the quality is night and day from the Forest River. Also, Grand Design is top notch when offering help and parts! Granted you will pay more, but in the end with great customer service, a overall better product it's worth the money. I am sure many people will disagree, but you pay for what you get.

@CrowdFreeRV
@CrowdFreeRV 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @Vickie Payne! We have heard similar comments from many owners regarding their Grand Design experience! I celebrate the higher levels of quality that GD is bringing to the marketplace! I believe that a rising quality tide will raise many ships. Forest River is a huge conglomerate encompassing many brands. Rockwood is but one of those brands. Their brands are not all created equal. Rockwood, like Grand Design is trying to do business better. The problem with the Grand Design comparison in this conversation is GD is better known for producing larger TT’s and 5th wheels. They do make some smaller units but I don’t consider them “ultralight” like the Geo Pro. Their smallest TT is an Imagine XLS 15FLE which has a UVW of 4,036 lbs. That’s about a half ton heavier than a Geo Pro of the same size. And Geo Pro has figured out how to make an ultralight that is still rugged enough to not start falling apart over the long haul. So... If a person is looking for a small ultralight TT, can you see why I would never steer them toward Grand Design? Now for larger travel trailers or 5th wheels, that is a completely different story. Hope this makes sense. Thanks for watching & commenting!!

I chatted with the Factory. Heres some info you might want? "The lug nuts on the wheels need to be torqued between 95 and 110." We are double nutting the front bolt on each side of the trailer. All bolts get a lock nut and the front get a lock nut and a nylon lock nut. The issue started with the front ones coming loose and when those did, the rest followed - that is why we double nut the front.

@@nathanc3396 Unfortunately that has not been my experience with Forest River. Check out my comment on my 2018 Rpod 179 and from a lot of Rpod owners in the forums especially in the past few years and hopefully they don't share similar build techniques and materials to Geo Pros or they have made improvements to fix the problems like Rpod owners have experienced? That being said I've done enough mods, improvements, and do regular inspections/maintenance to make it manageable. One thing for sure is put the rig through a good break-in and fix any issues while it's still under the 1 year warranty because after that they can be very expensive to fix.

I loved her laugh coming from the bathroom...sounded like Walter, when he laughs from his storage case (LOL!)....that was the best part....and the screws are backing out, NOT because they don't create pilot holes..but because they power drive the screws, and almost every screw has been over-torqued in the man made substrate and therefore destroys the screw hole thread wall.

👋 Hi @Joe Blow! Yes, Michelle can be a little stinker when I’m filming. That part cracked me up as well!🤣 I agree with you in part on the screws. If they just wouldn’t power drive them that might be enough to have most or all stay in place. They make drivers with pre-set torque, but I don’t think one exists with a torque light enough for RV interior wallboard. When installing fasteners by hand in my own rigs over the years I’ve discovered that screws which have been pilot drilled always have a higher degree of thread retention because you are avoiding all splits in the wood. @@CrowdFreeRV I do believe that the shop floor managers of the main RV manufacturers, during this COVID-19 Pandemic, (might) have probably 'encouraged' their staff, to expedite construction on the shop floor, to a point, that has seriously compromised build integrity. A lot of forum commenters of 20/21 builds, are complaining very loudly of stripped screws, non-matching and tight cabinetry joints, squeaks, etc...and I fear that will be a (hurried production) component of the RV industry for the next 3-5 years. If I were in the market for a used or moderately used T.T. or R.V., it would most certainly be confined to production years 2015-2019. I was 'lucky' to have wanted to get back into the T.T. ownership, by purchasing a 2018 model, and have had no warranty repair/replace and have only bolstered the queen bed support from the O.E.M. install. The one thing that I am mindful of, is that as you state, a lot of boondocking in-roads, can torture test any R.V. so pretty much make that only about 15-20 percent of where we wish to camp and the tow route to get to it.

Good review, thanks! I have not be impressed with Forest River build quality and reliability in my case I own a 2018 Rpod 179 and monitoring the forums I'm not alone but hopefully the Geo Pros are better even though they remind me a lot of my Rpod including being built on the same lines. For example the blinds are screwed directly into the thin wallboard without using plastic anchors and almost all those screws have come loose or are stripped. Also the foam used in cushions and the mattress are all terrible and don't hold up and need to be replaced in a few years if not immediately. I've looked in hidden areas by removing a vent on a wall or a bottom draw close to the floor and was amazing at the amount of construction garbage left during manufacturing. I have had to already replace the vinyl outside trim molding as it has gotten hard and cracked even after putting on vinyl protectant every year due to how thin it is compared to the replacement trim I used. I have not notice any outside delamination but will keep an eye on it but I do regularly inspect the seams and in a few places I've had put on more sealant. Based on your experience I am going to check the framing bolts for tightness and welds. I also regularly check for rust and lubricate or spray paint those areas to prevent further rusting. Even though I am not impressed with Forest River trailers I think my mods, improvements, and regular inspections/maintenance has made it manageable.

Hi @Mike F! Thanks for the very thoughtful comment! Your impression of Forest River is completely valid. Your experiences are also very common and are not isolated to Forest River alone. I’m glad you’re handy at DIY, because as you know from experience, that is a highly valuable trait for long term ownership success with mass-market RV’s. When considering if Forest River is a “quality” brand or not, I always encourage people to look at each individual product line. You raise a perfect example with the Rpod. Rockwood and Rpod are separate brand and manufacturing units. Their construction and build methods are very different. I observed this firsthand when touring both factories a year ago. This is an important consideration because Forest River does not have standardized materials and manufacturing processes across their many product lines. From what I have seen, and experienced through ownership, is that Rockwood quality is right up there with the best of them. But I’ve also heard many quality horror stories about other Forest River product lines. That being said, Rockwood also does some irritating & sloppy practices like screwing blinds into thin wallboard and leaving construction debris in closed off areas. . The mass market RV industry has come a long ways in quality improvement over the last 20 years. But there is still much opportunity for improvement. Buyer education is vital in this industry. Thanks again for the great comment Mike!

@CrowdFreeRV
@CrowdFreeRV 3 жыл бұрын
👋 Hey @Jerry Gundrum! You are exactly right! Loctite was indeed formulated for metal-to-metal. In experimenting with wood-to-metal, I’ve discovered mixed results: For attaching things to the thin wood interior wallboard I’ve had fantastic results. My most surprising application was attaching wire baskets for towels in the bathroom of a toyhauler I formerly owned. I mounted these baskets, which were without attach points, by putting on eyelet zip ties to the baskets. I then screwed the zip tie eyelets to the wall. I drilled a small pilot hole, and used a shallow screw with loctite. The baskets fasteners all stayed tight and none of the fasteners failed. The baskets carried a surprising amount of weight of towels & washcloths. I’ve also tried using loctite on loosening interior screws where the wood was just too loose of grip for the loctite to work. In that instance loctite was useless and only a proper hole repair will work. I’ll usually epoxy in some wood toothpicks or a bit of wood dowel. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching & commenting!

Hi there. New subscriber; thank you very much for taking the time to post such a comprehensive review of your trailer experiences, so far. We are looking to order an RV after the New Years. We live in southwestern CO, will be doing 1-2 week trips until we retire in 3-5 years, and probably will be doing 50+% of national forest and BLM boondocking. So, geo pro is one of the leading options. We are also considering R-Pod and Micro Mnnies in the travel trailer realm. For any of the models, we are looking into the murphy bed floor plans. We only have a Toyota Tacoma; so need to keep the trailer weights down. We're also looking in to some sprinter van class C's. Our long term plan would be to expand to 1-2 month trips after retiring. If we get a trailer, we'll upgrade for those longer trips. If we got a more expensive sprinter class c, we'd most likely try to make that work for the longer trips too in order to insure we get our $$'s worth out of it. I am really glad to hear you have had a good experience with the Geo Pro! This is pretty much our leading consideration; mainly due to it being one of the lightest, as well as being more boondockable right out of the box. I'd probably upgrade the solar capability, if we went this route. And, probably carry a smaller inverter generator in the event that we are enjoying a shady site. Safe travels!!

One problem with your theory of having Asdale and aluminum structure is the the RV industry never deals with this issue of RV’s leaking water. Their method of really lousy construction and using silicon and dicor self leveling chalk is their biggest problem. Silicon doesn’t sick to much of anything especially rubber and itself. Dicor is the worst but a cash cow for the industry. A product that has to be reapplied every 4-5 months has to tell you something, it’s garbage. If you want to seal your rig then all surfaces that are going to be chalked need to be primed and a commercial adhesive chalk should to used. These chalks will to good for 10-20 years. As far as using Loctite and predrilling holes that won’t happen. That’s takes more time and the screws cost 2 cents a piece more. Why would the manufacturer put anything less than a solid wood backer or cabinet knowing that screws are going to be drilled into them? Because pressed sawdust panels cost less. Just so you know I own an RV. Heartland Bighorn 5th wheel and love it and we love RVing. It’s just a shame that so many of these problems are easy fixes but yet the manufacturers don’t seem to want to do it.
@CrowdFreeRV
@CrowdFreeRV 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @keith gray! Just wanted to continue this conversation on sealants and water leakage. First Dicor. I’ve used Dicor a lot on my first two toyhaulers. I didn’t own them long enough for a long term test. But I did own them both for a couple years. I was happy with the durability of Dicor in all areas of the roof except for one - the spots where water would stand on the roof. This water was typically from the air conditioner runoff. The Dicor seemed to degrade quickly after a few months of exposure to standing water which typically would happen through the entire summer. . Let’s talk about the Geo Pro roof: I’ve been completely happy with the roof membrane and sealant. The factory roof seal application needed zero touch up and after its first year it shows zero signs of degradation. The roof membrane is a TPO material made by Alpha Systems and it carries a 12 year warranty. It’s the same material used on commercial roofs. They have their own line of sealants which I’m assuming are used at the factory. I bought a tube of their N1010 non-sag roof sealant for my emergency roof repair kit. I have experimented with the sealant and I like it. It doesn’t sag, which is good on a crowned roof, and it cures much quicker than Dicor. . I’ve been unhappy with the rest of the sealant on everywhere except for the roof. Some areas are sealed but it was done sloppily. Other areas aren’t sealed but should have been. And then many areas were sealed with a clear flexible sealant. I’m not sure what kind of sealant this is but it’s not silicone. After one year, this clear sealant is shrinking and then failing. I have been been slowly chipping away at resealing the entire trailer except for the roof. . Yes, Keith, I agree with you. Even with Azdel & Aluminum framing, keeping all water out of your rig is essential and it’s a mixed bag of sealant quality out there. . I recently looked at a brand new travel trailer with my sister in law. She was interested in buying it. It was built by a reputable quality brand. The entire roof needed a reseal. The sealant was shrinking and gapping everywhere. There were water entry sealant cracks over the entire roof. This manufacturer is know for quality so I was very shocked by the roof. The unit was produced during Covid. EVERY RV manufacturer has been experiencing supply chain shortages as a result. It’s just my hunch, but I’ll bet they either got a bad batch of seal or bought a really cheap batch in order to keep the assembly line moving. . Here’s the bottom line: It’s vital to prevent water leakage on every RV. On mass market RV’s the sealant application quality is hit-and-miss. As the owner you are the best line of defense for keeping your unit leak free. Even if it’s brand new. . Thanks for watching & commenting Keith!

@@CrowdFreeRV sounds as though your RV manufacturer has stepped up on roof quality. My Hearthland Bighorn is a 2017. I had no leaks but I knew I had structural issues because my roof was sagging under the front AC. If you would like to see the reason why it had that problem you can go to KZbin and search “ RV roof install” and find my rig. The TPO roof is a much better roof than what the manufacturers put on most RVs. This company put on TPO 60 mil structured roof with a fiber mess in the roofing material. Curbs are built for all the components that are on the roof. AC,roof vents, skylights and antenna etc. All are built with flashing and counter flashing. My roof will now pass a commercial inspection that you would do on a commercial roof like a bank or restaurant or office building. My problem with most of the RV manufacturers is that they will not spend literally pennies more for a jam bolt on your flooring to the frame, a bushing to protect wire run, drop of lock tight on a screw. The frustration for the customer would be considerably less if they cared more about the customer. Again I’m not someone who doesn’t own an RV. I have spent a lot of money for mine and love my rig and love RVing.

Good summary of the geo pro and observations in general...let me help you as you struggle to throw Jayco under the bus...the J in Jayco stands for junk...buy them, use them, throw them away I feel bad for those of us that pay over 20k for these things as they are only worth 15k tops....but its a seller's market What can I say. But Rockwood is the better value. Quality suffers as demand goes up.

Great video; I'm glad your closeup's are not intense. Do you realize there are few like you. We don't own the Geo but instead we have the cousin the Surveyor Legend 19bhle.Very similar to yours with a single axle. I personally didn't want a bunk house. But wife had this idea our adult kids would join us often..Not lol but guess what i have used the bottom bunk and have slept like a baby. Our TT is only 8 months since delivery. But ready to move to a larger unit couples camper. Well we dropped that move with gas prices averaging at $3.29 .. I miss 2016 to 2020 gas prices.

Great and very thorough review. Which bumper hitch did you use for the rear? We have the e-Pro 20bhs and need to do the same as you for our bike rack.
