@@BossMovieReactionsI very much enjoyed your reaction to this film!! I'd like to share a little fun fact!! I urge you to Google the name Chuck Wepner!! I'll tell you in short who he was!! Well actually he's still alive but anyway... In 1975 the heavyweight champion was Muhammad Ali. Under similar scenario Muhammad Ali signed to fight Chuck Wepner for the title!! Wepner was a regional heavyweight champion from my hometown of Bayonne New Jersey!! I don't even think he was on a short list of heavyweight contenders, so a virtual unknown, but nonetheless a 15 round fight was scheduled!! In attendance at that fight was Sylvester Stallone!! Wepner went into the 15th round, actually knocking Ali down early in the fight!! Wepner's nickname was the "Bayonne Bleeder" because he was easily cut and by the end of the fight he looked very much like Rocky does in this fight!! Anyway it didn't go to the very end, Wepner was knocked out in the 15th round!! Needless to say this fight heavily inspired Stallone to write and finish the script for this movie!! For many years Stallone denied it but finally he and Chuck Wepner settled differences financially and socially!! And Sly finally admitted that it was inspired by the Wepner fight!! They actually erected a statue of Chuck Wepner in Bayonne very similar to one you will see in one of the Rocky movies coming up!!

@@BossMovieReactionsIt's certainly up there with the big boys. Because you love the film so much I wanted to clear up the meaning behind Mick's line when Rocky was down in the 14th round [and this isn't up for debate; it's common knowledge in the world of professional boxing ... I fought for awhile myself.] He was telling him to get some rest before he got up. Back then, the count wouldn't begin until the standing fighter went to the neutral corner, so what Mick was doing was reminding Rocky that he has a chance to get a much-needed rest. Creed stands over Rocky for quite awhile, so the count doesn't start for a long time. What's fantastic is that Avildsen the director refused to spoonfeed the audience. There would be no reason in the world for either Mick or Rocky to ever discuss something like that, because in their world it's absolutely common knowledge. And . . . the rest he got during that "long count" is what gave him the burst of energy he needed to land those four uppercuts to end the 14th round. Films that don't painstakingly explain everything, that respect the intelligence of the audience, have always been rare and are almost extinct nowadays. The people who don't understand why Mick told Rocky to stay down are the same people who don't understand why Orange told White he was a cop at the end of Reservoir Dogs.

@@SECRETARIATguy224 Hi there, yes, I agree with you, and that's exactly what I've said in our reaction video "Stay down to squeeze out a few seconds of rest." Thanks for sharing your thoughts on that. Cheers! (:
@SECRETARIATguy224Ай бұрын
@@BossMovieReactionsYes sir. And it's even more detailed . . . if you watch the scene again you can see that Creed doesn't go to the neutral corner when he knocks Rocky down. He just stands there and raises his arms. The rule at that time was the referree couldn't start his count until the fighter moved to the neutral corner, and in that scene you can see that it takes the ref quite awhile to get Creed to move to that neutral corner, which means that Rocky gets _a very substantial rest_ before he gets up, because it takes a long time for the count to even begin. I must know, did you read my comments about the film Running on Empty?

@@BossMovieReactions One of my favorite scenes is near the end of the fight. Rocky has been knocked down, and Mick wants him to stay down so as not to get hurt anymore. It would have been easy for Rocky to concede at that moment....most people would have quit. Adrian, who has been hiding in the locker room, comes out, and at first doesn't want to look. That's how she's responded to the world her whole life, is my take. But she sees Rocky get up, against all odds, and stand to fight. She looks inward, and understands the importance of the moment. She can't go back - she needs to confront what she fears. She has never reached her potential, always hiding in baggy clothes and glasses, in fear, but at that exact moment, she realizes his heart and determination, and she looks inward and finds her own strength to grow. You can see it in her expressions that she put her past life behind her at that moment...because she sees the determination in Rocky. The connection between the two of them is the core of this film, and the entire franchise.

Stallone absolutely blows me away, from start to finish. I watched all the Rocky's and Rambo's back in the day, but had not idea that Stallone wrote them, and then eventually directed as well as starred in them. Rambo was an adaptation from a book, w/ a much darker story. No actor wanted to touch that role. Stallone took the bloated script, twice as long as what he produced. Cut tons of cheesy dialogue that Rambo says, that was completely against the character of the strong, silent type that a man like that would really be. He lightened it up, from the PTSD, more senseless killing spree that the original apparently portrayed and made him a sympathetic character. I've been on a binge of re-watching his movies and interviews. Had no idea that Stallone is another Quentin Tarantino. Completely self taught, no educational background for the incredible scripts they produce and in Stallone's case, one of the best actors of the last decades.

Hi Martin. Yeah, that really is an amazing story. But Stallone was smart because he also signed a deal whereby he would receive points on the back end of the film upon its release and total gross revenue. He was given 10 points on whatever the film ended up making, which boosted Stallone's net gain from Rocky to close to $2.5 million. Just finished editing R2. Stay tuned! (:
@WilliamMoses3552 ай бұрын
Stallone really took the message of the film to heart. Had the chance to sell the script for a pretty big paycheck, but then he wouldn't have had the opportunity to prove himself as an actor. And every role he did afterward, would have gone to Schwarzenegger or someone.

It is because of this movie that a statement that I make once in awhile exists. When somebody says something like, I've given my child every opportunity to succeed. I will ask them, how many chances have you given them to fail? Sometimes we need to give our children the chance to fail just as much as we need to give them the chance to succeed. It is this movie that has caused me to think that way.

I was even more impressed when I found out that Stallone is another completely self taught writer/actor/director, much like Quentin Tarantino. Only Stallone is also an incredible actor, and Quentin, not so much. Stallone is also the total sneak attack. You have no idea how genius the guy is. Speech impediment, a bit of facial paralysis from a childhood illness, and people just assumed/ and still do, that he's slow. Oh no, HELL NO!!!

This was an excellent reaction. I love how you guys understood the initial love scene between Rocky and Adrian. A lot of reactors tend to focus on the fact that Rocky is a bit pushy with Adrian. Yes, he is, but what people don’t grasp is that underneath her shy exterior is a woman who desperately wants to break out of her shell. They are two lonely people that each want love and in some way each feels unworthy. When they come together it is really beautiful.

"Rocky" is a love story - and about the spirit of a fighter. Stallone was inspired by a real professional boxer named Chuck Wepner (known as "The Bayonne Bleeder") who fought Mohammad Ali on national television and who took a beating with clearly no chance of winning. Stallone wrote the story and refused to let the studios make the movie unless he played Rocky himself, becoming a major box office mega star in the process.
@BossMovieReactions3 ай бұрын
Yes, the backstory of Stallone is equally as impressive! Thanks for sharing! (:
@SECRETARIATguy224Ай бұрын
Notice how when Rocky gets up, he is immediately indicating to the referree that he's okay, that he can continue. That's a crucial detail because just getting up is not enough. When a boxer gets up he must show the ref that he is able to continue. Also, notice the punching sound effects. They sound the way they _actually sound_ and not the ridiculous, bombastic sound that almost all other films use.
@BossMovieReactionsАй бұрын
Yes, I agree, the indication to the referee is very important. I noticed it and I also noticed the different sound effects in the Rocky movies! (:

Great trivia that I hadn't caught yet. I've been binging on Stallone interviews. You probably know about Stallone having to sell his own dog for $50, he was so broke. He found the guy months later, and got extorted big time to buy him back. Guy wanted a crazy amount of money, which Stallone gladly paid, and even insisted on a role in the first Rocky. Stallone never says who that guy is in the movie. I wouldn't want to be outed for that either.

In the second movie when Rocky says I feel like a Kentucky Fried Idiot..that was a nod that KFC gave those coupons for the first movie..Stallone is brilliant at subtle things

@mycattitude2 ай бұрын
Oh neat. In my binge of Stallone interviews lately, haven't caught that factoid yet. One of the more interesting ones was that Stallone was so broke that he had to sell his dog for $50. His poor wife at the time must have been beside herself, thinking Stallone was just a bum dreamer when he wouldn't sell the script w/out starring in it. He had to find the guy when he got his big payout, and pay him buckets of money to get the dog back months later. He also had to give the guy a role in the first Rocky. Stallone doesn't say what the role was. Guess he doesn't want to out the guy, who sounds like a friggen opportunist/extortionist. It's a rough neighbhourhood, w/ rough real life characters that Stallone came from. He portrays that so well in his movies.

What this movie does (and none of the sequels match) is to use Rocky as a metaphor for so many men who will forever wonder if they could have achieved greatness given the opportunity. Te fact that he didn't win, but went the distance, gave it a realism along with the inspiration. And at the end, the final lines of "I love you", as cliche' as it may seem, is absolutely perfect. After this, they turned Rocky into a superhero and that's not what this story is about. At all. But...there was money to be made. Still, this holds up as a masterpiece of heart, grit and optimism.
@BossMovieReactions20 күн бұрын
Yes, it was a great metaphor indeed, and I think it still worked with the sequels as well. Thanks for watching. (:
@NelsonMontana123419 күн бұрын
@@BossMovieReactions Well, no...LOL. Once Rocky became "the greatest" the entire metaphor was lost. He was no longer a symbol of man's need to prove himself. Trying one's best in spite of the outcome was no longer the message. He became a superhero. But, glad you liked it.
