@ It’s too bad Hollywood can’t make movies like this anymore. They have forgotten how. Only indie movies would be able to recapture the magic of Rocky nowadays. It was an indie movie. Maybe that has something to do w it. I recommend you check out “Harry and the Hendersons” (1987). Nobody has reacted to it yet.

Definitely not just the girls it's honesty a great date movie. Seen them all so many times. Butkus was his real dog as well he had to get rid of him before he sold the script as he was homeless he bought the dog back with money from the script. The turtles are still alive to this day

The most beautiful thing to me about the ending of this movie is how perfectly they both complete their arcs at the same time. Rocky goes the distance, knows he's not just another bum from the neighborhood, and has this connection that means everything to him and he's not lonely anymore. And Adrian, who tried to take up no space, never say what she wanted, just shrunk into nothing her whole life physically pushes her way through this whole crowd of people to get to Rocky and tell him what she felt first. Perfect.

Great point. Its not only Rocky who comes out of his shell, but Adrian is a revelation as she finds strength within herself, she never realised she had after being put down by everyone and her loser of a brother. She becomes the "Rock" for Rocky.

She goes through the metamorphosis-woman who can barely look people in the eye fearlessly shouts "I love you" in front of the world! The older I get, the more this fantastic movie makes me cry. There are so many details about the characters revealed through wordless images. One of my favourite pieces is during that 14th round, after Rocky has been knocked to the ground. Adrian comes out to see how he's doing, sees him struggling to get up and looks away - but then it's like she realizes that this is the biggest moment ever in Rocky's life, and even though she doesn't want to watch him in pain she forces herself to share the moment with him, and looks up. Set to Bill Conti's wonderful music it becomes intensely moving.

You can see why Stallone fought to not only sell the script but play the lead. Not only is the story great, but the performances are fantastic, and the score is AMAZING!! And that look on Creed's face when Rocky gets up in the 14th! Can't wait for you to see the Rocky 2. Truly an amazing sequel.

This is so much more than a sports movie. This is a love letter to all the invisible people that we take for granted every day. Pet shop workers, butchers, teachers, nurses... the people who make up the true backbone of this world and yet constantly get sh*t on. That's why the ending is so perfect: even after he manages to go the distance, Rocky still knows what matters most and all he wants is to be in the arms of the love of his life.

I grew up in Philadelphia. I was 10 years old when then movie came out. It was a point of pride for the city that was going through a very hard time back then. It gave the city hope and showed the heart the the people who are from Philly have.

I'm from the area, too. Grew up around the same time as well and people have to understand Philly has sentiment for no one and has pelted Santa Claus with snowballs. So, for Philadelphia to take pride in Rocky to this day (and they do) says just how much the film meant to everyone.

I saw it on my own on a VCR in 1982 or so... I was 11 in Belgium. It's amazing to know this movie was so well crafted, played, directed, that I understood every details, every romantic situations, social, dilemmas, inner turmoils of each characters. This movie changed my life, the same way it changed many teenagers from the 80s. Now you can easily understand why Rocky's univers is so cherrished. I'm glad women of the 21st century can discover and appreciate one of the most touching love story ever written. This is Stallone's heart.

One thing that always stood out to me in this movie is one of the best supportive characters of Rocky is the loan shark. Most of the characters barely give him the time of day until he gets signed up to go against Creed.

This movie is an underdog on and off the screen. No one wanted to invest/make in this movie, but SS persevered until it was finally made. It ended up winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards. I always cry at the very end when Rocky screams for Adrian and when she gets in the ring with him, the first thing he asks is what happened to her hat. He's so in tune with her, that he places her before his obvious pain to notice something so trivial about her. Great review - thank you for posting this!

Was 12 in the theatres when this came out. Let me tell you during the fight everyone in the theatre was standing yelling out for Rocky and then the final bell many had tears in there eyes. Even me. Still to this day the most iconic movie experience ever. Well done!

I’m sure someone already brought it up, but the story of that dog melts my heart. Stallone was homeless , that was his dog, he had to give him up. He wrote Rocky , sold the script , bought the dog back and put him in the film.

"Awww...I love them!" Everyone loves Rocky and Adrian. I am very lucky to have found my Adrian in life...been married since 2002, and I wouldn't trade a day of it for anything. The older I get, the more I appreciate Stallone's early original movies like "Rocky" and "First Blood." I sincerely hope that he finds the time to sit down and watch some of these reactions to his early movies and fully understands how timeless and impactful they really are.

There are two types of people who watch this movie, people who think Paulie is just a dick, and people who see the pain beneath it. Most don't see beyond his actions. Not an excuse by any means, but it IS an explanation. People often attribute their own actions to their circumstances, but attribute others' actions to their personality (Paulie must just be a dick, it's who he is,, but I'm acting like this today because I had a rough life or I'm angry). It's nice to see someone who gets it. Great reaction.

Yes! Mickey always believed in Rocky's ability as a fighter. But he hated the choice that Rocky made, to become a "leg buster" for a loan shark. I don't think Mickey was ever trying to "get a piece of the money" by asking to be Rocky's manager. But rather, I think he saw an opportunity to help Rocky finally turn his life around. People don't become coaches to get rich (though for some, it does work out that way). They become coaches because they enjoy teaching young people how to maximize their talent, and improve their lives. Edit: BTW, this movie was set in 1976, which was the bicentennial anniversary of the United States. The celebrations were huge, and that's the reason for all the red, white, and blue.

The first Rocky is Stallones masterpiece. It:s a great movie that is on another level than the many sequels. This movie stands alone in that Rockys' victory wasnt about winning the big fight; Stallone went deeper into the character and wrote something more real. The power of love in ones life; being able to see beyond the dark path that his life was on. He didn't want a rematch because for him it wasnt about winning a boxing match .. he now had Adrian in his life along with new possibilities. A brilliant bit of writing by Mr Stallone.

When I was in the navy , my buddy lived in Philly and invited me to see QUEEN in the Spectrum. I was more interested in running up the stairs at the museum. I did it! It was one of the best moments of my life! Love this guy!

And things you could not see from a male perspective Sylvester Stallone is the greatest male philosopher when it comes to raising boys to be MEN This is the GREATEST movie ever made for raising strong men. It is more than just cult! This story not only raised an entire generation of GenX boys to be good men, it inspired the Boomer generation as well. My Dad introduced this to me! HE was inspired by it and changed his ways to act like a better man. A man with meaning! This story taught every GenX boy that a REAL MAN fights to go the distance. That a MAN's role in life is to risk his life and go the full distance to take care of the people who NEED him. Rocky Balboa taught me that my role in life is to PROVIDE and PROTECT the people that matter; regardless of my own life This movie RAISED me... and my entire generation of males to be providers and protectors of our family, our close friends, the women we love and our kids... even if it means our life has to end because of it Thank you for GETTING IT! It wouldn't have been right or appropriate for Rocky to win the fight. Apollo hadn't taken the fight seriously, or trained hard to be at his best. Rocky winning would have been ultimately undeserved and unsatisfying. Championships have to be rightly fought for and earned to be meaningful.

Personally, I appreciate how you understood Paulie's character more than most reactors. Nobody understands how Rocky doesn't want Paulie to get in that criminal life, so he's trying to protect him, although Paulie can't see it. Also, you saw how Paulie was dealing with growing older in a physically demanding job and how it was that despair that made him act out like that.

Honestly, he jad far more experience boxing than anyone else in the cast since he picked up boxing while he eas enlisted in the Marine Corps. He had a pretty great record of wins. Even had a fight with Muhammad Ali for charity. Paulie was going have a bit more of fleshed out charactization in the original script that emulated Burt's life. He was going to be a veteran and was drinking to deal with his PTSD. That's why his character is negative so often. But they cut that bit of backstory sicne they were so tight on budget. If you look in his living room, you can see a real life picture of Burt in his Marine uniform.

It's actually kind of funny watching you get so emotional about the movie, but only because so many of us have been right where you are. There's a reason people know the Rocky movies, and that is they are genuinely good - they also, IMO, get better. Yes, sometimes they are a little cheesy, but the genuine core of the movies is always that Rocky is a decent person who makes the people around him better.

Yeah, 'Rocky' surprises everyone - most people expect a boxing movie and instead they get a love story with some boxing in it :). I defy anyone to not fall in love with Rocky (and especially him and Adrian together) - genuinely don't believe there's a more lovable underdog character in cinema. (and as beautifully written, acted and shot as it is, it wouldn't be the movie it is without Bill Conti's _legendary_ score IMO, always great when a reactor really digs it :)

And to think, Stallone wrote and acted this movie, and it was one of his first. Nobody wanted to take a chance on it, but he stuck with it, was persistent. And man he knocked it out the park. It's a classic that holds up decades later.

One aspect that a lot of people either don't know or don't remember is that the Bicentennial was a huge deal all year long in 1976, and of course the 4th, Veterans Day, and Memorial day were also really amazing. The end of the year was kind of melancholy because the celebration was over. I hope the Tricentennial will be the same.

The whole point of Rocky, the thing that makes it a piece of Steinbeckian art, is that he knows that he can't win. There's simply no way. He just doesn't want to lose. He just wants to be there standing when the final bell rings. How much more heroic is it when someone perseveres even knowing that there is truly no way they can win? Also, anyone who hasn't seen the fascinating story behind the making of this film is really missing out. The best thing about this movie though, and many people miss it, is his love for Adrienne (sp?) and the way it manifests right at the end. When she runs to him in the ring, losing her hat along the way, this man who just achieved the greatest thing in his life, the greatest thing he will ever accomplish, who can barely see, barely stand, when she reaches him the first thing he says to her is "where's your hat?"... THAT is how much he's into her. True love is selfless love.

This movie changed me as well, I went from a chubby unathletic 11 year old to someone that’s been focused on health and physical fitness ever since the early 80s. This was and still is my favorite movie and movie character. Thank you for reviewing this; this franchise means a lot to me.

Rocky is a Franchise that has the right amount of Life for the women and the men. I have seen so many woman reactors from all types of backgrounds start the movie Rocky, get blown away with the details, and must see the entire story of Rocky & Adrian and every character that adds to the story. With men, it’s a no-brainer that they will love the boxing and everything else the movie has. Both Men & Women enjoy watching it together. Get ready to enjoy the entire Franchise!

This is one of the greatest movies ever made, bar none. It's NOT a sports movie. It's a movie about Heart. It's ALL heart, and it's a love story. Adriane and Rocky are one of the greatest couples in all of movie history. I don't think I've ever, ever heard a negative review of Rocky. It's the best.

This movie feels human. All the characters are so relatable because they feel like real people. Take, for example, the loan-shark that employs Rocky. For sure he is a scumbag and we all think he has second intentions when he gives money to Rocky but its not the case. He really likes Rocky and cares about him. A person may be a bastard and do also good actions sometimes like a real person. Boxing is the less important thing of the movie but its also good. The training montage and the music are superb. This movie is very touching and great.

Stallone had sold Butkus before the movie because he was broke; when Rocky turned out to be a success Stallone took some of his profits from the movie and bought Butkus back.

Yeah, sly had to sell him when things got rock bottom. He was broke, practically homeless and had to make a horrible choice as he was struggling to feed them both. Luckily it wasn't long before he wrote Rocky and the film was greenlight so he immediately bought him back.
