Yep, Stallone insisted on keeping the Rocky series fight scenes as real as possible, which included real punching. Unfortunately Dolph turned out to be a bit too good at it, being both a massive guy and turning out to be a bit of a natural at boxing. He knocked Carl Weathers silly while filming one scene as well, causing Weathers to almost walk off the project in a frustrated rage. There's a similar story during the production of Rocky 3. For some reason Stallone insisted on taking a real punch from Hulk Hogan just to experience it (A punch from a young, heavily steroided up Hulk Hogan, what could go wrong?). It went about as well for Stallone as you'd expect.

Just for fun I gave Rocky Balbao a punch out rebuild while listening to this. Rocky's main advantages are that he does not flinch or stun at all and all punches including little mac's star punches do about the same amount of damage as mac's basic jab. He also has no specific weakpoint, and no instant knockdown or instant ko moments (i.e. there is no one specific second of a match mac can punch rock a specific way to insta-win). Essentially Mac must simply do an all out knock down drag out until Mac just eventually wins by damage infliction. Rocky has 3 different special punch patterns, all 3 of which contain 1 instant-ko haymaker. All 3 use the same tell, Rocky makes 8 bit 'talking' sounds and taps a spot on his chest.
