We spent a cloudy morning in Wanaka hiking up to the Rocky Mountain Summit at Diamond Lake Conservation area. The incredible views made us understand all the hype Wanaka often gets and why it is such a popular South Island destination.
The 7 kilometer walk took us about 3 hours (with a 4 year old), and was moderately difficult. The portion of the hike up to the Lake Wanaka Lookout is kid-friendly, but has several stairs to climb. After the Lake Wanaka Lookout, the trail becomes much more technical and may be difficult for young children.
