*LYRICS - Rocky Road to Dublin - The Longest Johns (The Dubliners)* in the merry month of June, from me home I started, left the girls of Tuam so sad and broken hearted, saluted father dear, kissed me darling mother, drank a pint of beer, me grief and tears to smother. then off to reap the corn, leave where I was born, cut a stout black thorn to banish ghosts and goblins, Bought a new pair of brogues to rattle o'er the bogs, and fright'ning all the dogs on the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four, five, hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road, all the ways to Dublin, whack follol de rah! In Mullingar that night I rested limbs so weary, started by daylight my spirits bright and cheery, took a drop of the pure to keep me heart from sinking, that's the Paddy's cure whenever he's on for drinking. To see the lasses smile, laughing all the while, at me curious style, 'twould set your heart a bubblin', asked if was I hired, wages I required, ‘Til I was almost tired on the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four, five, hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road, all the ways to Dublin, whack follol de rah! In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity, to be so soon deprived a view of that fine city, then I took a stroll, down among the quality, me bundle it was stole, there in a neat locality. Something crossed me mind, then I looked behind, no bundle could I find upon me stick a wobblin', inquiring for the rogue, they said me Connaught brogue, wasn't much in vogue on the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four, five, hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road, all the ways to Dublin, whack follol de rah! From there I got away, me spirits never failing, landed on the quay, just as the ship was sailing, captain at me roared, said that no room had he, then I jumped aboard, a cabin found for Paddy. Was down among the pigs, played some hearty rigs, danced some hearty jigs, the water round me bubbling, off Holyhead, I wished meself was dead, or better for instead on the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four, five, hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road, all the ways to Dublin, whack follol de rah! The boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed, called meself a fool, I could no longer stand it, blood began to boil, temper I was losing, poor old Erin's Isle they began abusing. "Hurrah me soul" says I, Shillelagh I let fly, some Galway boys were by and saw I was a hobble in, with a load "Hurray" joined in the affray, quickly cleared the way for the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four, five, hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road, and all the ways to Dublin, whack follol de rah- Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road, and all the ways to Dublin, whack follol de rah! (Y’all are welcome 😮‍💨)

Love it. I was thinking Robbie looked either like he was thinking they were lost, or was getting distracted by the wildlife… and Andy was going off on some tangent about rocks or roads, while JD was either amused or lightly puzzled (and also amused)

@rurallemas That's.... A fan theory that would have never occurred to me. I've always equated their name to the undergarment that keeps your legs warm. I'm now disappointed that your theory was disproven. A band/singing group made up of a bunch of Johns would have been neat.

Basically whenever you can. I usually get to "saluted father dear" on my first breath, then take short rapid inhales to survive to the end of the chorus where you get a deep breath and the cycle repeats. Listen to a solo singer singing the whole thing, groups make it harder to hear the breaks.

Ok, so you'r song reminds me of a time when I was about 15. Back then, My parents sent me to a trip to chech republic. I went out to the mountain trip along with the teachers. Three of us fot ahead and eventually, we got separated from the group. we carried on ahead, and after a while, we met a couple who pointed us in the direction of the hotel, that stands on top of the mountain. We wen there, hopngthat our teachers, will be waiting for us there. To our surprise, there was no-one waiting for us there. We Went to the office and after, presinting our case (in Polish) The Hotel director called the Police who escorted us back to our hotel. Right now it sounds funny, but, back when I was 15 and when I was in a foreign country, without knowing chech language, it was frighening experience. Anyway, I enjoyed the experinece of learning the ropes of a new language or taking care of myself in a foreign country where I don't know the language.

It would be so great to be out walking and suddenly see and hear this coming towards me. But for now I'll have to do the singing myself.. Not as much fun :( When I first heard this song, I thought the difficult thing would be the lyrics and singing fast. But when I actually learned to sing it, I discovered that the biggest issue is breathing. So singing super fast is the only way I can make the air in my lungs last until there's time to take a new breath.

Idk why but whenever I hear a good version of this song I feel oddly motivated, speaking of which I just finished about a weeks worth of college work in the past few hours lmao

So I randomly thought about this. I never sang however I did okay in band from ,4th grade all the way through 5 years of college. Because of this I've listened to a lot of brass ensembles and symphonic bands in my day. The speed of your version of Rocky Road to Dublin (RRTD) eminds me of a song called Galeforce by Peter Graham. The A section is RRTD There is a recording of this song with the title being "Peter Graham - Galeforce (EBBC 2001) I've clocked the bpm anywhere between 195-200 bpm for this recording. Couldn't imagine trying to play this in Euphonium lol. Long story short is....your version of RRTD goes fast and it reminds me of an obscure brass ensemble piece from many years ago lol.

Truly adequate! Somewhere out there, even to this day, there are rumors of three men still on that rocky road, and someday, they just might make it to Dublin.

I know that probably I'm not supposed to say this... But even after a few videos and clips, and songs... It's hard to see this godsend of a band down one man.
