Colorado Experience: Native Horses

The history of our country has always been told from the colonizers’ perspective. One mythology is that horses integrated into Native American cultures after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, but the truth was found hiding in plain sight - in both oral histories and the bones of Native horses. Archaeologists and Native Americans come together to retell the story of the horse.

When I was a child I lived for a couple of years in Russel Gulch with my family. There were wild horses nearby, and it was a given that they had always been there before europeans ever arrived. Such majesty to hear and watch them thunder dusty trials through the valley. A most awe inspiring memory, forever recorded in my head.

Horses and camels were native to the Americas then went extinct for eons. These animals were hunted by giant flightless birds that were also extinct long before anything humanoid left a mark in the west. It's astounding that people in the Americas did so well without them for so long. Along with horses came pigs, but domestic dogs were here before. What about the geologic events that buried a horse that deep in the last few hundred years?

Can't DNA be examined in horse remains & fossils & compared to known breeds of horses worldwide? Wouldn't that answer questions about origin of modern horses in NA today?

Ummmm ... yes. And what we can prove with DNA is that horses in North America are descended primarily from the horses that came with Spanish conquistadors. Further, it is clear that almost immediately, the conquistadors lost their horse monopoly. Herds grow exponentially and people are not dumb. The use of horses was transformational, and fast. Just as smallpox raced through populations that had never seen Europeans, horsemanship caught on without Europeans present.

The whole point of this show is that there were indigenous peoples in the Americas *who already had horses*. Horses orginated in the Americas. There's no *real* reason to believe none lived through the ice ages. Seriously, the level of horsemanship in some First Nations would be difficult to achieve in a generation or two of humans. What we're seeing now in TikTok girls jumping courses and trail riding bridleless is only now becoming a phenomenon instead of an anomoly in *mainstream* culture. I can think of a thousand reasons American Mustangs would pack so much Spanish blood. Only one of them, and not the top of my list, would be that there were no horses here in the Americas before the Spanish came. We've already learned that there was contact between different continents throughout our history. No-one brought horses before the conquistadores? That's an outdated hill.

That is exactly how the native americans aquired horses.. exscaped horses multiplied to millions in a short time as they had little competition for food... natives they were quick to adopt them for travel and hauling and eating. One thing you may not know is that native americans did not fight in battle on horses. This is how they are shown in movies but no recorded battle ever tells of native americans in battle on horseback.

@@jennifersilves4195 Horsemanship isn't inherited. It's learned. Anyone with inclination and physical prowess, dexterity, motivation and knowledge of a horses mind can become a great rider. It was clear to natives that the horse could be highly valuable to their ability to travel, hunt and fight so it they were highly motivated to master horsemanship.

incredibly misleading. Pre Pueblo Revolt (1680) is still post Columbian Discovery (1492). The Aztec and Inca certainly had no knowledge of horses when the Spanish got there and if Spanish horses were used by Native people prior to late 17th century they were still Spanish horses.

Need to find horse skeleton that is pre-1400 to prove conclusively that the horse survived the ice age extinction. This extinction is puzzling. How the horse could die out and then be so successful is weird.

NO..!! IF there were tribes with horses it definitely would've been noted by the Europeans. Not only that but horse equipped tribes would've ruled very large tracts of territory. Horse use in the eastern US would've been of limited value. Its the Plains Indians that truly revolutionized life and warfare once they got enough horses. They usually stole them from any group, native or Euros didn't matter. Lot of the tribal killing was over horses. The horses also allowed the Comanches (best example) to range further and steal more horses. Sort of a force multiplier. Its utterly incredible, but not surprising, that such a solid historical fact would be the target of a fairy tale attempt.

Add: frankly the smaller Plains tribes are lucky the Comanche did not get horsed up any earlier in history. As nasty and brutal as they were to most other Indians, there likely would've been fewer tribes still existing when the first French trappers/explorers ventured out west. Before horses the Apache were constantly brutalizing the Comanche, as were Navajos. Horses came and the Apache headed for the hills for cover.

Europeans brought them to the colonies. They love Kentucky bluegrass, guess its like candy to them. We had a couple acres of bluegrass amidst the pasture and they found it. It was always kept very short by the horses. FWIW this was in northern Iowa.

A lot of these horses live in Western Colorado and are managed by BLM. They claim, they're just feral horses. Every year they round up many of them. A lot end up in slaughter houses in Mexico 😡

Then listen to the dates they actually give in this documentary because they provide no evidence Native Americans riding horses prior to 350 years ago. This video talks about all the test it could run and data it could collect but the only data or test results they actually share with you offer no evidence to suggest their point. There are many accounts of Spanish immigrants saying there were more than enough horses in certain areas. too many even.documented.I believe there's enough evidence to support that there was in fact horse's long before the Spanish came

I have remained deeply interested in the First Americans, from what little I can glean from- sadly- white history. I believe there is such a thing as a guilt passed down generations, like trauma. Native Americans didn’t write their languages, only after the Spanish arrived, the friars learned their languages, developed their grammar and a written language. I hope they are not going to start saying how bad the Spaniards were. Actually, they thought the hunters the agricultural skills, arts and crafts, besides the Spanish language.

The indigenous peoples of the northern hemisphere of the Americas passed down stories from one generation to another by telling of stories. If written documents of their history ever existed, we may never know... they did leave some forms of writing on their dwellings, lodges, clothes, baskets and such but it was mostly about that individual's background or life. One cannot place a true value as to the worth of horses to the progress of man, all mankind here in north America. So true in other parts of the world also. Before combustion with metal the greatest form of transportation was by way of the horse. Like comparing today's world with the auto or truck. If we don't have one our lives are fairly limited as to what one can do and how mobile their live are limited to. The horse was priceless and toany today the same..today's form of transportation is the primary reason the world is slowly being decimated along with all it's resources. Is it possible that this was a result of trade in mesoamerica? The benefits cannot be understated. Seems like there could have been extensive trade between Spaniards, Aztecs, and native people well before the Pueblo Revolt. Sure the lack of surface tin and copper could explain why the native people were stuck in thr stone age, but lack of large beasts of burden could also explain this. Large scale farming beyond subsistence farming just isn't possible without draft animals. Without that surplus your societal energies can't as easily be devoted to endeavors not related in the gathering of survival specific resources.

There are no native horses in the Americas when Europeans first arrived, they went extinct 10,000 years ago. The horse here to day were brought here by Europeans after Columbus. Someone is trying to rewrite history. Another fact Indians used dogs to haul things and they ate them as well. Oxen, horses and other animals used in the past for transportation and cultivating the land did not exist here until after the Europeans came. It is one reason that the native americans were so far behind the Europeans in development. One fact that is interesting is that the Aztecs made toys for their children that had wheels on them yet there is no trace of wheels being used in the Americas before Columbus... I think this is sooo cool. There is history that has been lost. I agree that when European people came here, they felt more superior because the cultures were so different. Such a wrong attitude. We need to look at this and other archeological evidence to really tell the story. Americans want to know what happened and who are the people, the animals and culture before the Europeans. Europe is rich in history, we want a rich history too. We don't live in that age of only one culture can be correct. Most people know the history books are wrong. So let's say your father and your mother each had one grandparent who was Native American. That would be one out of four grandparents for your father's side and one out of four grandparents for your mother's side. So 1/4 on one side + 1/4 on the other side = 2 out of 8 or 1/4th of your ancestors would be Native American. Of course, many Native Americans have some European ancestors and vice versa.

The Native American culture is poorly understood if understood at all. When I was growing up in the late 40's and 50's the bad guy was always the "Indian". At least that was what Hollywood told us. Even in school I was not educated about our Native Americans. Only study, reading and speaking to them have I learned a little. I am now approaching 80 and have little time to undertake such a study. I can only hope that a few or many will teach us about who was here first, that they had a very involved culture that continues to endure even today. My grandparents came from Russia, but I have always felt a kind of kinship to our natives.

Lack of fossil evidence in the appropriate places means horses were extinct in North America by ~10,000 years ago. When fossils younger than that surface, I will be more likely to jump on board. Native folklore might be describing events that are only a couple of hundred years old.
