I’ve been on boats over 50 years, been a licensed Captain for 25.. Ive never seen someone use the holder as a guide.. That was slick... I’m adding a few new rod holder to my boat and thought I see how others do it.. Guessing on the angle requires filing it out to get the correct angle for the holder to sit properly.. Thanks for the tip..

its not too hard. The centering small drill bit is long enough to still guide the large hole saw. I start the small bit first maybe 1/4" straight in , then rotate the drill down to the matching angle as its spinning using the device to be mounted to eyeball the angle. the angle needs to be close, but does not have to be perfectly matched as the large hole you make is usually slightly bigger the the device going in. But you want it as accurate as you can do. Or I just start it angled, it all depends how I feel about the hole.

Quick question. What size hole saw am I using? Rod holders is 30° with diameter of 1 7/8 inches.

If you can get a 1 7/8 inch hole saw or a 2 inch hole saw and you should be good to go.

Nice job but at least in larger boats I was taught anytime you cut into fiberglass, its a good idea to then use a tool to dig out a portion of the core material below the surface, then fill in with epoxy. What this does is if water ever gets below that rod holder, the water would not soak into the core material and travel deeper into the hull. Is core protection not as common in fishing boats...?

Thanks for watching David. I should have mentioned that I used 4200 inside the hole before I put the rod holder in. Since the hole is all the way through the "cap" or gunnel of the boat, there is no need to dig out anything. If your were to look from underneath the hole, you would be able to see the sky. It just depends on how you will be using them. 15 degree rod holders are almost vertical. Where do you want to install them? Near the transom or midship?

I would go with 30s closest to the transom then 15s or 30s after that.

hi Rodney fyi new boat you should have used gemlux screwless rod holders no screws on top they have big nut on bottom I change my sons boat and now doing my rod holders nice phin chaser tight lines thanks john hooked n rolling fishing team homestead fl
