Rod McKuen ~ IF YOU GO AWAY ~ song by Jacques Brel. English lyrics by Rod McKuen. McKuen and Jacques Brel collaborated on many songs that became hits. For this reason the two formed a close friendship. McKuen says: "When news of jacques death came I stayed locked in my bedroom and drank for a week."

😢My beloved wife of 54 years is lying beside me suffering in pain from inoperable pancreatic and liver cancer. Even with her scheduled chemotherepy, she will be gone before long and so will the sunshine in my life. Rod's lyrics in english are so meaningful to me and express just how I feel at this time. Thank you Rod in heaven, if you can hear me. God bless you for this beautiful song presentation. I hope others who my loose the light of their life find healing in this song.

Dear Rod McKuen - I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for your beautiful words and songs. Thank you for your humor and love. Thank you for sharing your cats and Old English Sheepdogs with us. And especially, thank you for giving me the chance, one snow-stormy day in Michigan, to make one of my mom's dreams come true when I took her to OCC to one of your readings. Rest in peace, Mr. McKuen. You will be missed, sir, but your heartfelt words will live forever. "But if you go, I'll understand, leave me just enough love to fill up my hand. If you go away, if you go away, if you go away..."

In 1967, my girlfriend shared with me Rod McKuen's book "Listen to the Warm". Here was poetry that didn't rhyme and the words matched my experience. I was inspired to write my free verse poetry and still do. I saw Rod in concert at the Hollywood Bowl in 1969. Great concert and a warm memory. He touched me as I am sure did many others. Adios Rod.

I saw Rod in concert for his 50th birthday when I was in my early 20's. I still have the yellow jacket with his signature sneakers on the front and a blue and red front zipper. I keep it as I really loved this guy. I'm 75 now and can't tell you how valuable thar jacket is to ME. Would never sell or give it away. Some people just never understood Rod's poems and that's to their lack of understanding of that era.

What most people don't get is Rod was the last of the "beat" musicians. Folk singers from the late 50's to early 60's who performed in coffee shops and bars, cafes in Greenwich Village. BEATNIK's. Acoustic guitars open mic just raw expression of thought through words. He inspired young people like Robert Zimmerman. You know Bob Dylan another singer who can't sing a lick......

One of the great qualities of artistic expression is that it is seen, heard, & felt by each of us in our own way. I cannot think of another name for whom those words ring true as they were for Rod McKuen. Some loved his work, others couldn't bear it. And no matter what else, he invoked passionate responses & feelings from all who listened. -- I 1st encountered Rod's work --" Stanyan Street & Other Sorrows", in late '68, through a girl I briefly dated. His poetry made me very uncomfortable & his singing voice even more so. However, by 1980, having moved to The City, I found Rod affected me very differently. I bought " The Sea" : I still own that album, having listened 1000 times at least. And, Rod's poetry suddenly spoke to me --very deeply. So, allow me to say, RIP ; you're already greatly missed . You made my life richer & for that, I send heartfelt thanks--forever. Wolfsky9, 68 y/o

Honestly, I don't know why other people here hate this so much. I LOVE this-the second-best version after Brel's, in my opinion. (And that's a lot coming from me, since I don't normally consider myself a very artistic person, but this rendition is just beautiful. I could almost feel his pain-but of course, Brels' is incomparable and absolutely spectacular.

If you go away on this summer day Then you might as well take the sun away All the birds that flew in a summer sky When our love was new and our hearts were high When the day was young and the night was long And the moon stood still for the nightbird's song If you go away Ne me quitté pas If you go away Ne me quitté pas But if you stay I'll make you a day like no day has been or will be again We'll sail on the sun We'll ride on the rain We'll talk to the trees And worship the wind Then if you go I'll understand Leave me just enough love to fill up my hand If you go away If you go away Ne me quitté pas If you go away If you go away as I know you will You must tell the world to stop turning till You return again, if you ever do For what good is love without loving you Can I tell you now as you turn to go I'll be dying slowly 'til your next hello Ne me quitté pas If you go away If you go away But if you stay I'll make you a night like no night has been or will be again I'll sail on your smile I'll ride on your touch I'll talk to your eyes That I love so much Then if you go I'll understand Leave me just enough love to hold up my hand If you go away If you go away Ne me quitté pas If you go away If you go away as I know you must There'll be nothing left in this world to trust Just an empty room full of empty space Like the empty look I see on your face I'd have been the shadow of your dog If I thought it'd have kept me by your side If you go away Ne me quitté pas If you go away Please, don't go away

McKuen and Jacques Brel collaborated on these songs, neither ever claimed to be singers...simply lovers of words and the way they might make people feel
@WickedFelina
@WickedFelina 2 жыл бұрын
Brel didn't "collaborate" ~ 'Ne Me Quitte Pas' IS his song, and his GREAT hit. What happened to Jacques Brel's song was, since they were in French (one being 'Marieke' in Dutch a song about the destruction of his homeland, and losing a Great Love ~ Belgium, not a 'human' lover). A host of English speaking singers, and song writers wanted to perform them in English speaking countries so they translated them the best they could. They tried to be faithful to Brel's lyrics, and meaning. Otherwise, most people, who do not speak Dutch or French, would not be able to relate, and the songs would be much less likely to be hits. A famous one in English is 'Le Moribund' or better known 'Seasons in the Sun' which was translated, and reworked twice by Rod and Terry Jacks. If you have never seen Brel's version of 'Ne Me Quitte Pas,' search for it here then, avail yourself of the rest of Brel's body of work. No composer has equaled his poetry or variety of music styles. Brel is a singer and actor. He is the Greatest on so many levels. Sadly, most people in the West, still, despite Bowie performing his Work "Amsterdam" and "My Death" and the hit Broadway musical "Jaques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris" DON'T EVEN KNOW HIM AT ALL Singer, musician, composer, poet, actor, lover, humanitarian. Or, everything that matters in life!🍃🌹
