Good to hear you are working on the Rode Central problems, but there is also a problem with the TX firmware: in broadcast/uncompressed mode sometimes the TX units will not make a recording (which unit it is varies randomly), and the .egg and .ugg files are missing on the TX units (i.e. not just Rode Central not recognizing them).

With new firmware (v1.2.3) out today, I too have just been testing this against the three known bugs: 1. Broadcast/uncompressed recording length: these can now be exported beyond the 7'14" length that was only possible previously. I've only tested for 14 mins so far, but this was fine; it is hard to believe much longer tests won't work too. 2. Broadcast/uncompressed recording stopping when signal is lost: this is now fixed and performs like the uncompressed recording did. That is, I tested with the signal completely dropped out for 1 minute and the TX unit continued recording unbroken. 3. Some broadcast/uncompressed recordings not being made: this intermittent (but fairly frequent) problem, usually affecting one TX unit at random, seems to have been fixed: I have tested 40 (very short) recordings with no failures to record. So good news: a great improvement, and it looks as if we have the three initial bug fixes required
@drbadphil5455
@drbadphil5455 3 жыл бұрын
By way of an update, I have now done a much longer TX internal uncompressed recording with the new firmware, of 1hr 3mins: this also recorded fine, but divided the recording into three files - two of 30mins 44secs, and one of the remaining minute or so. The compressed mode (I ran one TX on each mode) produced a single file for the entire 1hr 3mins. Given the slow speed of the Wireless GO ii's USB transfer, the breaking up of long uncompressed recordings into chunks (which equate to 259,356KB) seems OK.

Thanks, Tom ... great review! I tested the range on my GO II kit today and was initially disappointed to hear the audio clipping at 300-400 feet. Once I took a closer look at the video, though, it looks like the "open line of sight" is literal ... the system seems to work well as long as the units can clearly "see" each other, but the audio will drop out if you turn sideways and partially obscure the connection with your body. Thanks again!

Note: The transmitters can capture uncompressed audio with a maximum resolution of 24-bit / 48 kHz. Using Rode's companion app, you can export files in the same recording resolution, or other settings such as 32-bit float / 48 kHz, which only offers compatibility with DAWs and other programs that support 32-bit float. The transmitters do not record in 32-bit float.

@@ExploreTravelTV It has 32bit export, but it for compatibility with DAW software only. If it did had 32-bit float, it would be right there in the top of their feature set on their website ! But you can see there is zero mention of it... So they are trying to get sales out of people ignorance of feature set. The notice I posted is from B&H ! They added it there because they know this will cause lot of return !

There doesn't seem to be a way to set the gain for the internal recordings though. I checked the manual and I cannot find it. The gain setting on the receiver only drops the output signal of the 3.5mm to the camera.
@BoxroomSweden
@BoxroomSweden 3 жыл бұрын
@@nickbricks4095 I wondered the same and got a response from Rode support today confirming that you cannot set or change the recording level/gain for the internal recordings to the transmitters. The gain settings on the receiver only changes the output signal going out of the receiver and in to a camera/recorder.. There is also no -20 db safety recording done to the internal storage on the transmitter, and it doesn´t record in 32 bit float. So be aware that it´s very easy to clip and distort the audio since you cannot change the recording level at all..

Yes and no. I guess it depends on how you use it. If you’re filming events, such as weddings, and you have another cameraman that’s following the bride and you’re following the groom, and you’re trying to capture their voices at different locations, it could get a little messy. That’s where the Tascams could be most beneficial. But maybe that doesn’t apply to you.

Tom, thanks, as always, for the fantastic video. In your mentioned comparison tests with Rode Wireless Go I and other Saramonic Blink Pro etc units, can you do "back turning" tests. As you know, the biggest problem with this 2.4 Ghz wireless minces is that they often seem to work for 200 feet line of site but completely fail at UNDER 10 feet when you turn your back. That info will be super helpful. And, in a reply here, can you give a quick comment about how much better you think this model is with back turning. Also, in the wrap up section inside at the end of your video, is there a hum problem? I saw some other video with a MAJOR audio artifact hum problem.. No so bad in yours, but are there issues with the hum or possibly the audio cable that comes with the receiver? Thanks once again for the great video... I would love if someone could answer this - Is this really one receiver receiving multiple microphone? OR it is actually a situation where the product is actually multiple receivers built side by side into a single housing? WHY??? If two microphones are used on the same frequency at the same time then they will interfere with each other because the receiver cannot distinguish between different signals and cannot separate them out into separate signals. In a situation like this neither signal will come through correctly. A good way to visualize this is to think of the microphone transmitters as two different radio stations and your car radio as a receiver. You can only listen to one radio station at a time because the radio can only be tuned into one station at a time. You can also have only one station broadcasting on each frequency or neither gets through clearly. If you've ever traveled and had two radio stations overlap on the same frequency with neither coming in clearly you've heard an example of this. thank you:)

Hi, I'm sorry, but one of the most interesting tests of all these brands of wireless microphones, would be to see how far from the receiver the transmitters work with the body facing away from the camera, before the dropouts occur. To always stand or walk towards the recipient, I do not think is a good test. And this is mainly where the different brands differ, in addition to sound quality and "noisfloor". I have a question - when using both Transmitters: Seeing how the Transmitters are actually the ones Recording and that the Receiver is the one 'Merging' the audio (if you set to to 'merged') is it then possible to have a Merged audio in your camera (so ready to go for your quick edit), but still be able to access the files individually from the Transmitters if you set them to Record? (in case you don't like how the 'merged' file turned out in certain areas - I'm also assuming that it's easy to sync them up if this is the case, seeing how it's basically almost identical audio when a person is talking) So long story short: Can you set the Transmitters to Internal Record independent files from 2 speakers WHILE setting your Receiver to Merged Audio for your camera? I know you may be thinking "but why?" Well think of it this way: When you were filming with your wife you can actually use 3 microphones now. The 3rd one being a shotgun mic on top of your camera connected with a Y splitter to get that ambient track or if something happens near the camera and you are far away would be nice to capture that. So if all goes well (like it did in the test with your wife) you just leave the audio as it is (of course fill it and mix it in editing), but if you wanted to separate your audio from the wife's audio, then you could do that by importing the 2 separate files and syncing them easily, whilst also keeping the channel that was recording the ambient near the camera. Useful for docu work, events, dual person vlogs and others. Imagine this scenario and how easy Rode can make your job: You are filming a walking interview inside a factory. You have your interviewer with Transmitter 1 and your interviewee with Transmitter 2, they both record internally and send it to the Left channel for your camera merged, but then you also have a shotgun directional microphone connected to your right channel, and when you are pointing your camera at the machine that the interviewee is talking about, you can actually hear the machine (because you mix it in post). No need to swap and go for B-Roll after the interview. And if you really need to separate the 2 people talking, just grab the files and easily sync them thanks to the 'merged' track that is almost identical in places where they are talking. Then mute that one and now you have 3 separate audio channels.

Are the audio files that cut off 4Gb in size? Sounds like the storage system might have a limit... where some cameras for instance just go on and make a new file (often with a fraction of the audio missing) it looks like the Rode just stops. It sounds really good. Also, you could use the transmitters in mono mode to double the useful time if the receiver can go for longer ....

@RichardsWorld 3 жыл бұрын
@@joyoffilming9500 It's not about sound quality. It's about it has so much dynamic range that you can't clip the audio. With 32 bit you hit record. You don't adjust gain. You get the audio to the levels you like it while in the editing phase. So, for example if you record something very loud with 24 bit and 32 bit you better set the gain on the 24 bit or you will clip the audio. But on the 32 bit you lower the audio in the editing phase and it actually isn't clipped. There are lots of videos about this on KZbin. That is one reason I bought a Xoom F6.

@@TomAntos The safety track option is only for the 3.5mm output of the receiver to the camera if I understand correctly. The manual explains it. It says it only works in "merged mode". The receiver will output the merged signal of both mics onto one output channel and the -20db on the other. Has nothing to do with the local recordings as it seems. So no safety channel on the local recordings and I also cannot find a gain setting for the local recordings. The gain setting on the receiver is only for the 3.5mm output.

@@TomAntos Am i correct that the safety track only works if you have only ONE mic on? Also, as to workflow and buttons when only using one mic, is it idiot proof and automatic? Does it just go into MONO mode automatically with only one mic on? And then record safety track if you change it with the 2 buttons to stereo? Firstly thank you for the in depth review. But no-one's conveniently talked about how the signal holds up when it's not in line of sight. Every review has avoided this and it's the biggest thing I want to know. Most likely because Rode used friendly influencers and not ones who will bash the product (and then never get paid again).
@TomAntos
@TomAntos 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Oliver. Happy you liked the review. To answer your question I first want to say that Rode didn't use me. I bought this product myself and did the video myself without getting paid. I'm not afraid to bash a product when I see a problem with it as I have in my latest video. Rode specifies that these are not meant to be used at long distances without open line of sight. Short distances (less than 50 feet) I used it behind cars even a wall as long as there are other objects around to bounce the signal. Hence why I don't show how this product fails when doing something the manufacturer doesn't say it will do. For long range work where there is no line of sight I would still suggest that you use a traditional wireless lav system that sends out a stronger signal and usually has a bigger internal or external antenna that can capture that signal. Do to the small size of these units there is no way to put a bigger antenna that will work perfectly at long range. I am working on a video comparing this system to others on the market and will be showing how they work behind walls etc. Hope you watch that video and it answers your questions.
