You got this a bit wrong throughout. The noise gate's Attack is how fast it opens your mic when it hears the signal you permitted (in this case anything higher than -55db, so ...your voice). If you set the attack super slow, you'll hear your voice come on as if it were fading in. Careful not to set it too slow otherwise you'll miss the first letter of your first word you say when starting to speak. The HOLD feature is ONLY for when the noise gate cannot hear your voice anymore after a set time, then it will start shutting the gate off. This way, when you set the proper HOLD value, the gate won't be shutting off immediately after you finish your sentence, giving you time to start another one without hearing the audio go down and up again. And...oh boy, range. Just see this as how strong of a muffle you want on the sound cut by the noise gate. See it like an ear plug that is rated for 14db. Meaning the plug will ATENUATE the sound (lower it) by 14db compared to the original loudness. So if you leave range to 14 db on the noise gate, it means that your noise floor is going to be lowered by 14db when the gate is in effect (not talking) This is super usefull when the noise is extremely present and you don't want to hear the noise completely disapear when you stop talking. It helps keep a level of realism between the gate ON and gate OFF moments. Sometimes it's very jarring to suddenly hear complete void between sentences. Smaller range like anywhere between 14db and 6db is usually good.

@@madisonngfilms if what keeps hapening is your voice fades in every time you speak, then yes, a faster attack. Kepp playing around until it feels "natural"

thank you for this very useful information. Can you also help me diagmose why Rodecaster seems to muffle my sounds that I have loaded on the sounds panel. When I am speaking the sound is supppressed and it sound like fading off and back again. Could this be caused by noise gate effects?

This is the first video I watch from you as I (like millions of others) am working on wanting to do a podcast. Of course it takes time and my recordings are not the greatest due to the audio processing. Noise gate was issue number one for me. So this thing only has a noise gate? What about a downward expander? One should be able to attenuate background noise even further to have a more clean sound.

Nice video, but the attack is not the setting for "how fast it cuts out" its actually how fast the noise gate is opening from quiet to loud. You confused attack and release.

My AUDIO PROCESSING takes me straight to the screen with the NOISE GATE, but it's an on/off along with other selections such as COMPRESSOR, HIGH PASS FILTER & DE-eser, then the APHEX processing ON/OFF options below that.

Love your videos. Can you explain to me how I can record two people podcast in the same room with the rodecaster pro and 2 rode podmics. Sound of the other person keeps coming thru my mic. We are in the same room. I see a lot of podcast with people in the same room. Need to stop my other host voice coming thru my mic.

Make sure the ear is on when you are recording both of you

Idk what awalls response means, but the podmics are top address cardioid mics. Meaning they take in sound through the top of the microphone and reject most of the sound coming from the rear. So when recording 2 people, try to place the two mics facing away from each other, with a bit of distance in between. You’re probably never going to completely eliminate bleed between mics but a noise gate and proper mic placement will definitely help.

The way he explained noise gate can be misleading. Noise gate is not filtering out sudden loud noises. Noise gate is a threshold that, in essence, mutes your channel if the input isn’t loud enough. This comes in handy for-you guessed it-“noise”. That’s what producers call sound when they don’t want it (sound when they do want it is called signal). This comes in handy when your recording has intermittent or constant noise. Like a fan. Scenario: you record a 1 hour podcast. Talker stops talking for a few minutes while the other guy talks. Annoying fan in background. If you had noisegate dialed in, no worries. That’s what noisegate is. If a dog is barking while you’re talking, noise gate will do nothing to keep you from hearing the dog.

@@Brads1Cent noise gate is to block out any background noise from the room coming through your microphone. USB and Bluetooth will be clean audio coming straight from the source there will be no background noise from the room.
