Hey John! Great video. My wife has watched it more than 6 or 7 times. We snorkeled there about 5 years ago and there are so many more fish there today! We didn't see any schools of fish, just a few here and there. Seems like the bay shutdown really allowed the fish population, and reef, to bounce back. Yay! Very cool to see a seal return and get to relax and play. When we were there the beach was so crowded the seals would never have come in. Glad you were shooting that day and got to catch it. Good for you.

Hi. Love your video. My kids and I are going there in June 2022 hopefully if COVID-19 doesn't mess our plans up. I'm so excited, can't wait to snorkel here. I have a GoPro. I want to film here as well, hope mine will be as nice as yours. 😍

Great video John. I watched your video because a few friends spoke highly of the bay for snorkeling and our next trip to Hawaii we want to explore more islands for snorkeling (we are snorkeling junkies). The beach looks great and the water looks fantastic for having fun in. But, one of the best snorkeling spots in the world, I would not even consider it in the top 100. Unfortunately your video and many others showcases the unhealthy state of the reef at Hanauma Bay. There is only a few pieces of live coral (i saw 3 pieces in 20min) and as most can see it is just baren rock and dead coral. The few species of fish are quite cool (humu humu trigger, picaso trigger, convict tang, sailfin tang, naso tang) but the lack of a wide range of fish species also confirms the degradation of the bay due to decades of abuse by humans. Our trip to Maui and snorkeling some of the small bays was much different. Live coral blanketed the floor of the bay in all directions, and the water was teeming with life (a wide range of fish species, turtles, sharks, rays, and invertebrates). Honolua Bay on N Maui is one of those places that just blows you away. I am in no way criticizing you John or your video, just expressing my sadness that probably at one point, a long time ago, this bay was probably covered in live coral

I"m glad to see you have branched out and are shooting underwater. It's good to see your channel grow. I'm sure I'm unpopular, but we both appreciate that you don't pander to the girls in bikini's. Certainly part of Hawaii, but not something that needs a lot of attention. On the flip side, as you know, you'd probably get more views if you went this direction. I really like watching your channel and appreciate your commitment to honest views of your islands. God Bless and we hope to be able to return soon. Be encouraged!

Question: post pandemic, is Hanauma Bay prettier and has more sea life or Three Tables & Shark's Cove? Never been before and I can't do both. Thx!
@HawaiiJohn2 жыл бұрын
🌴 Aloha!~ lcglazer 🌈 Hanauma Bay is a bay of fantastic scenery and Hawaiian beauty. It is a place where you can be healed just by looking at the unrealistic scenery. ⛱️ If you have to choose between the two, I recommend Sharks Cove. The amount of fish both look similar, but Hanauma Bay is overcrowded and the water is not clear. If you go to Shark Cove, you have to watch the tides. At low tide, the area available for snorkeling is reduced. Avoid weekends crowded with locals and go early for parking. 😄 Aside from these two, my favorite is Electric Beach on the west side of Oahu. The water is very clear, there are lots of tropical fish and you can see turtles. If you have time, please visit. 👍 Mahalo for watching!! ^^ 🤙🤙

which is the best spot there to go? near the cliffs? what time is best to go? Trying to get a reservation but at 7 am it seems impossible
@HawaiiJohn3 жыл бұрын
🌴 Aloha!~ James Hartman 🌈 In my opinion, the left end of the bay is really nice. I recommend going in the morning when the water is clear so that you can see lots of fish. It's a bit cold when you first enter the water, but you'll get used to it at some point. I can totally understand how you feel when you say it seems impossible. However, there are lots of people who are successful at making reservations, so I encourage you to keep trying. Be prepared before 7am to make a reservation online. 👍 Mahalo for watching!! ^^ 🤙

Beautiful place, but beware that the current passing the mouth of the bay causes a rotating current that will sweep you out to sea if you are not alert. Once I was just swimming along and looked down to see the bottom racing by. If I had not had swim fins on, I would have been swept out to sea.

Fun Fact: The Humuhumunukunukuapua'a is not the longest named fish in Hawaiian. The longest is the Lauwilywilynukunuku oioi (long nose butterflyfish)... You can win a beer with this important secret.

Clear water and lots of exotic fish. In 1957, these corals were alive and you could not walk on them without get cut. Looks likes time have destroyed that beauty. I see dead flat corals that people walks on. I do see a live one here and there between the harden one.
@Ninja_Sloth2 жыл бұрын
I see the same as you Ricardo. No live coral at all. I assumed at one point, probably decades ago, there was most likely coral everywhere. If people could only see what it used to look like, we all would change our behavior on how we treat beautiful ocean bays
