Rodeo 101: Saddle Bronc

Rhythm between a cowboy and his horse is key in Saddle Bronc. The rider moves his feet from the horse’s neck toward the back of the saddle, in time with the bronc’s action. The cowboy holds on to a braided rein that is connected to the horse’s halter, using it to balance himself. He cannot change hands on the rein. If his hand placement is too low on the rein, he will be pulled over the front, too high and he may be bucked off the back before his eight seconds are up.

I dont understand. In this video these guys hold on to a rope with the other hand free. Then on other videos i see them holding on to the saddle. And on another I see them holding on to a rope and the other hand gripping the saddle?

At a regular rodeo you can't touch the saddle, horse, or yourself with your free hand. But at a ranch rodeo you have the option to hold on with your free hand in the saddle Bronx event, your score won't be as high but the option is there for you to use if you see fit
