You guys wanted to know more about him as a person. However, that is not why he was there. Even though this is a talk show, everyone in the audience knew he was. The King of the one liners, and he was there to make people laugh. He was one of the best. RIP Rodney Dangerfield.

Usually when comedians came on they did a 2-3 minute set. If Johnny called them over to sit down after the set, that meant they got Johnny’s seal of approval. The goal of every comedian was to get to sit down because more often than not that meant their career was going to take off. Seasoned veterans knew they were going to sit down and Johnny would have lead-in questions ready so the comedian could answer with more bits from their material. That is what you’re seeing in this clip.

@@BritPopsReact he got better with it over the years, but a lot of it was from a defense mechanism. He had crippling stage fright and he had to keep the jokes flying! It is like the high wire act: Don’t look down. Rodney was such a sweet man. And broken deep in his soul from a lifetime of abuse (when he said he “got no respect, he meant it.) People should know about him and his story because it is the story of redemption from great suffering. You guys should check out some of his straight interviews. He is very intelligent and disarming, a very introspective person. (Incidentally, he was an avid pot smoker his whole adult life.)

Part of the talk show genius of Johnny Carson is that he would adjust his level of intervention depending upon the quality of the guest. If a guest was terse, he'd ask a lot of leading questions, make jokes, etc. With someone as loquacious as Rodney, he'd just sit back & let him rip. He checked his ego on the stage. Brilliant.

Johnny Carson was and still stands as the absolutely best at letting his guests shine. He had a gift/knack for setting celebrities and regular folk up to look and perform at their best. @@Kazumatempest I liked them both, but Craig and Conan never came close to Carson's ratings. Leno and Letterman had better time slots and ratings than Craig or Conan. Conan was given the Tonight Show but yanked a few months later and Leno reinstalled.

Johnny Carson did that type of interaction with very few comedians. He played it more like Rodney's straightman. Rodney would always come in and do a few minutes of stand-up with the audience and instead of walking off stage he always was invited to sit down with Carson. But instead of a straight interview about a movie, book or show Rodney was still doing his rapid fire delivery of jokes. Even the audience was a part of it sometimes. Not many comics were invited after their routine to sit down with Carson but Rodney was special.

Rodney Dangerfield wasn’t Italian-American. I think what you meant was he had a New York City accent. New York City natives, which Rodney was, have that accent, regardless of their ethnic background.

He was born not far where I grew up on Long Island in NY. He had that New York fast talking style. Johnny Carson knew to let Rodney go off and entertain everyone. He started his career late in life. I believe he was in his 50s when he got his big break. He had his own club in NYC and he was always there working on new stuff when not on the road.

Classic New York humor. He was an icon and was so famous that we didn’t need an interview. We were there for the one liners. He had his own club where he helped many younger comics get their start. Watch interviews with any comic who worked for him.

The idea of one liners is a very old American concept of joke telling that goes back to the Minstrel Shows dating from the early 19th century to the early 20th century. The idea of a comedian talking about himself and his reactions to every day events didn't really come about until the American comedian Lenny Bruce. Funnily enough Rodney rarely repeated jokes since, as with most one liner comedians such as Bob Hope and Henny Youngman, they had joke writers and they would buy their jokes. With old comedians it was all about delivery and stage presence, not long form story telling and social events.

Rodney had a tough time adjusting to doing movies. He was used to getting an immediate response from his audience. However, when doing his one liners on the set, the cast and crew remained silent. This troubled him. They had to explain that they couldn’t react while filming for obvious reasons. Just a little side bar l picked up years ago during one of his interviews.

When Rodney was on, it was always understood that Johnny was the setup man. Getting a word in edgewise was not in the plan for the most part. Rodney's Tonight Show appearances would start with a few minutes of standup, then he would take a seat and basically continue his standup. I had never seen him do a serious interview until I just now looked one up on KZbin. Check the interview with Bobbie Wygant.

I'm glad you brought up the lack of an actual interview. I see that too. In fact I often find that Brits and Aussies ALL interview so very well. I can't tell you how many times I got a sense of Dame Edna or Mr Bean and so many more from their appearances on chat shows. Johnny Carson was and always will be the best talk show host in my opinion. Rodney Dangerfield was one of a kind. Although for some viewers now they'd probably have a stroke. Most times BP1 you are correct the sit-down session with Johnny was more of an interview. The acts that Johnny loved he would ask to come to the couch to do an interview. Rodney was just Rodney. On a side note. Ellen Degeneres was the first female comic that Carson invited over after her routine.

Dangerfield knew so many jokes that he could do three or four hours in a row without repeating himself. He was constantly honing his material, so the same joke ten years later would be better than it was ten years earlier. But he would have new material all the time. Early on, he would start his routine with, "I don't get no respect," but later in his career, he would save it for later in his routine because it became such an applause line. Early bit... "I don't get no respect... every time I get on an elevator, the attendant says, 'Basement?'"

Many of the stars who came on the Tonight Show were there to promote a movie.book.record etc. You would get a clip of the movie and the set up and when the movie came out and that was usually done toward then of the persons time on the show. Most of the comedians would do a few minutes of stand up and then sit down and chat. Rodney was so well known back in the day, he didn't have to do the stand up anymore. He is an American Icon of Comedy. Dr Boombatz is in many of his stand up routines as well. He is basically a 1 liner comic. If you want more great comics---I am sure Robin Williams explaining in a Scottish accent how golf was invented. Or Steven Wright brilliant one liners that make you go....hmmm. Amongst others. This show, "The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson" (yes, it was a talk show, as it is now...but with Jimmy Fallon hosting...between Johnny and Jimmy was Jay Lenno), was about entertainment.........the crowd expected what you see here, because Rodney was already a well-established personality...and that "personality" had certain traits. If you wanted to know more about the real Rodney, you had to read an entertainment magazine if they had an article on him, or wait to see an interview with Barbara Walters!

@@BritPopsReact Rodney quit show bus. at 28 and didn't come back for 20 years. One night Rodney tried out a new joke at a comedy club and it got a tremendous reaction of laughter. Two nights later while watching the tonight Show with Carson and during his monologue out came Rodney's joke. A writer for Carson, was there and stole it. Rodney was furious and sent a scathing letter to Carson. Carson was furious. About 6 months later he was booked on the show but when Johnny saw his name he refused to put him on. A few years pass and he's booked again. Everyone was telling him Carson wasn't angry anymore. The night b4 his appearance, Johhny Scrubbed him. So a few months later, Johnny & a producer for tonight who knew Rodney pulled up in a limousine at the Copacabana nightclub in New York. The line to get in wrapped around the building. Rodney was there and noticed Carson and Invited them to his table. He apologized to Carson and a few nights later Rodney made his first appearance on the Tonight Show.

New Sub. Hello from Los Angeles, CA!! !You guys are great! I can't ever recall Rodney giving a serious interview ever. Doesn't mean that he never did, but I never saw it. You should check out Caddyshack and Back To School to see some of his acting chops. Also, I highly recommend visiting The West Coast if you can. California alone has to some degree almost everything and more than all other states combined and if You throw in Las Vegas, The Grand Canyon and possibly Utah that is HUGE bang for Your travel buck! And if You are ever in Los Angeles I can give tons of recommendations. Avoid Summer!!!! The rest of the year is mild to perfect!

Dangerfield never really caught on until he was older maybe in his 50's. The Tonight Show was the only the only live show in its time slot of 10:30 pm to 11:59 pm Monday through Friday-that's CST. The Tonight Show was on NBC. CBS and ABC affiliates mostly played reruns of syndicated programming.

You two can please stay in England. You don't recognize the greatest talk show host of all time, And America's favorite standup comedian from late 60's until he died in 2007? Rodney was really Jacob Cohen, so of a vaudvillian named Jack Roy. Rodney was so famous that he opened his own club, Dangerfield's, in NYC, and it thrived for many many years. He wasn't an actor. He was a comedian, who they talked into being in a few movies just because people loved him so much.

Rodney Daingerfield was no ordinary guy. He was hilarious and made me laugh hysterically, and I'm not easily amused. He and Joan Rivers were the only two people who could make me laugh. My sister lived in a tiny town called Daingerfield, TX.. It was dying on the vine after after all of the areas mfg plants closed due to the Democrats moving everything out of the country to China and Mexico. Rodney heard about the town, with the name similar to his, and he decided to go there and show support for the town and try to save their local movie theater, which was also having to close down after being open for over 80 years. He went and they had a small parade in.his honor and they gave him a key to the town.They renamed a street in town after Rodney. He donated to keep the movie theater open and it survived for a few more years. Such a great man and so incredibly funny ! May he rest in perfect peace . I'll always feel blessed everytime I think of him.

He took every opportunity. The Johnny Carson show was THE top tv show. If you did well there, it was everything for a career. He said when young comics came to him to learn he would tell them to stop filling their routine pulling faces. Work on the writing and delivery and write a lot of material. I don’t think he would repeat these jokes the entire USA already heard on the Johnny Carson show unless he wrote new jokes building on them.

Rodney is Rat Pack, Don Rickles era, kind of comedian you see in Vegas opening for Dean Martin back in the day.

This is interesting. Comedians like this went on shows to do their standup because that's what people wanted. I think you are used to the modern era where people go on shows to talk about themselves, answer stupid questions, comment on a lame youtube video, and don't have any funny material at all.

Think I've heard Rodney say that, he hung around, as a kid in Vaudeville, Sammy Davis Jr., also, but as a kid I know Sammy performed, dancing, in Vaudeville, there were a few times, Rodney spoke on his background, on Carson, they show an actual picture of his dad with Charlie Chaplin, someone has said before, he was always on,..always performing, he was a very hard working performer,..do keep going, Easy Money, the movie that was previewed here was funny, Joe Pesci was in it with him, there's a fantastic scene with Rodney and Sam Kinison,..in Back To School movie,. and all those wife jokes, insults are brought life cause Adrienne Barbieu plays his cheating wife in that movie, and they hurl insults back and forth anytime they're in a scene together,..funny stuff,..do check out Jonathan Winters, Redd Foxx, Phyllis Diller, Your Show of Shows,..and Mel Brook's two thousand year old man bit,..enjoy,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

Usually, when he was on Carson he would do 5 minutes of his stand up routine. They may have cut it out on this video. He is practicing and trying out new jokes or one liners when he sits and talks to Carson.

Rodney was in a couple of movies…Easy money and also back to school! He was a sarcastic standup comedian. His signature statement was I get no respect!
