Rodney Matthews: Commission by Ecotricity

As a child living in post-Second World War Somerset, England, I was impressed by the abundance of wildlife in the fields and woods near my home and spent every possible opportunity marvelling at the diverse forms of flora and fauna there. Visiting the area more recently, I found that the remaining fields, that had not been built upon, contained a sort of uniform grass, devoid of wildflowers and the clouds of butterflies I had once seen there. I have become aware that we are destroying our beautiful world for the sake of money and convenience. I am not crazy about having huge wind turbines everywhere, but I would prefer these to polluting power stations including nuclear. I have a high regard for Dale Vince, founder and CEO of Ecotricity, the pioneering green energy company that commissioned a short video for their website. This project was brought to fruition by the small team of Sean Naden (CG modelling) and myself (concept, storyboard and design). The music (derived from the traditional hymn ‘Jerusalem’) was arranged and recorded by Nick Laird-Clowes. This video is not the final version; there are differences both at the beginning and end, plus there is a still image of the three characters that I designed (but were not used), which were to have made up ‘the e team’.
