True. Tony knew how to market himself and pushed the limits of vert for his time. But now Tony’s tricks are now being progressed past, but Rodney’s… haven’t. People can recreate Tony Hawk’s 900 or his great runs of vert, but nobody can recreate Mullen’s technicality. You just don’t see people doing hardflip dark side or hardflip Casper with tricks out. His overall impact on skating as a whole was unprecedented and will likely never be passed.

I am 48 and I still skate my old Mullen Sinner board with gringking trucks and element wheels. I’m not as good as I used to be but I can say I skated in competition with Jeff Philips a couple years before he killed himself. I lived it and breathed it.

Andy Anderson isn't as OCD as Mullen. Carlos Lastra is really good too and put Anderson to the test in one of their Braille videos on here. Mullen is basically an alien from another sport who was forced to expand into street by his business partner and that's the only reason he had any impact on something people care about. Otherwise he'd still be doing spins in his garage or would've just quit and gotten fat and old in the 90s when his freestyle sponsorships ended. Remember Mike T for giving us Rodney Mullen.

As a late 80's kid, who was there for at the dawn of the Tony Hawk games that REALLY blew skateboarding up all over the world, I don't think there was a single kid I knew who would've named anyone other than Mullen as their favorite skateboarder. Obviously we drew inspiration and style from everything in those games, but Mullen was the guy everyone talked about. He was it, head and shoulders above everyone else. A true, unmatched legend. And seemingly a great guy to boot.

Daewon broke his ankle super bad and can still get it! I shattered my right great toe sesamoid and 1st metatarsal and cracked my left great toe sesamoid and I still skate! It took me about 2 years to recover but I didn’t give up! Don’t give up bro

I feel you... I had to quit about 15 years ago because I snapped my ankle ligaments that never properly healed because I'm a hemophiliac. And still whenever I'm somewhere I haven't been before I'm scouting for spots and on holidays I usually try to find the local scene to hang out, watch and chat... if I'm feeling bold enough I'll pop a shuv-it, which is a pretty safe trick that I can still pull off. Quarantine has me reminiscing about owning a board though... I think I might just buy one just to ride around and see what's still possible.

I just looked up the definition of Autism: A serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact. If you have seen Rodney Mullen's Ted Talks, or his relatable and unique way of communicating in general, I would disagree that he has an impairment of communication. On the contrary, he makes more sense and is more captivating than many people I've spoken to. I then had to ask myself if that makes me autistic, and since neither I nor Rodney have ever been professionally diagnosed with that impairment, I get to the conclusion that he is just different. By being different and obsessed with skateboarding he moved into a realm of skill the majority wasn't willing to dedicate themselves to. It changes you to be possessed by a calling. Just because he's overwhelmingly sincere, excited and takes his time choosing his words, doesn't make him mentally impaired. It makes him cool.

Rodney is such a gem. The most humble and lovely person alive and an absolute gift to skateboarding. We couldn't thank him enough. Just look at him in the 80s ... and now in 2020. Still doing his thing. Cause he loves it deeply and because it's his life basically. Where he belongs. His inner peace. Precious! I could watch him skate and talk for hours! He's almost an icon of the 80s stylewise. At that time freestyle was ... freestyle. In every angle topped up with the artifacts of the 80s in general. He basically looks like a school kid in the wrong element. But make no mistake. Something many of us miss these days. Ordinary people. Living in the given time. No need to stand out or follow some rules. Just doing what they love. More of that please. That he later transformed to streetstyle and shaped skateboarding into what we know today .. Rodney you are THE best!

One of my favorite parts of this story is how his dad didn't want to become a skateboarder in multiple points of his life. Saw no future in it. Then he goes out, creates the future, pioneers the sport, revolutionizes the actual manufacturing of skateboards, and is literally the one of the sole drivers of the entire lifestyle. I love to skateboard, but Rodney was born to do what he did.

rodney's explanation of focus on one thing, put the rest on auto pilot is what happens when you advance super far in the martial arts. this is how we dissect things in the martial method. cut it all down into chunks, perfect each chunk, destroy the opposition. rodney was just the first person to bring the method to skating. still my all time fav skater. rodney is the goat.
