SHUT came before Zoo I skated and went to the factory when we could. I rode that board that’s on the wall of that interview. They were not the best but it was from NY. And it was street. We didn’t have Vert. Zoo Came in the 90,$

SOO glad this finally happened! I'm not that much younger than Rodney and from across the river in NJ and grew up skating the same scene (Brooklyn Banks/NYC, Jersey, Philly, etc), did a magazine called Rare Breed in the late 90's, had personal friends that rode for Shut, etc and knew about a lot of his story described here, ... and if there's anything I can state from it, is that universally, Rodney is widely considered a legend and pioneer for our culture, and an awesome guy. Seeing Rodney get his flowers here gives me the warm fuzzies, this story NEEDED to be told! Rodney, you are one RAD human!!! ❤🤙 Thank you so much Nine Club! 🙏🏼

Rodney is a few years older than me but I lived in Metuchen when he was really starting to hit. I know the first hill he bombed. And I loved his parents so much. They were amazing people. So cool to hear this history.

I'm 50, from NY, and I skated with the early Shut guys on several occasions back when I was a little grommet, but, with Rodney, only once. Someone I knew who was tight with Shut invited me to a private session down at the Banks. It was the middle of a weekday, so no one was there--just me, a few friends, and OG Shut: Coco, Mike Kepper, Bruno, and Rodney. Rodney was only there for maybe 10 minutes, though, because he was doing slappys on the planters (if you've been there and seen those planters, you know how sick that is!) and busted his kingpin. I didn't even know snapping kingpins was possible back then. That's why he will forever be my definition of "gnarl"!

The SHUT crew was so revered in NJ/NYC. The pop of the shark deck was insane. Rod created boards for street skaters. Props to Nine Club for giving these legendary figures time to tell their stories. Crob you talked over your guest a few times in a weird way. When he was talking about soccer he was trying to tell you soccer was pretty rare in America at that point. It wasn’t like when you were growing up and everyone knew what soccer was. Awesome episode. As an east coaster this stuff was so interesting. I probably started like exactly 10 years after Rodney. We got shut boards in our town.

Missed #30 & 31 live shows due to extra work duties. Sucks but this interview really got all the mysterious SHUT skateboard secrets out. Loved every minute of this interview being from the East Coast and living in NYC for 25 years now with 20 of them as a yellow taxi driver. We now try and pull over and get into the Lower East Side Skatepark or the curb at Spring & Lafayette St. Bought my first board after 10 years not skating close to that curb. A Shut board with black Independent trucks. Went another 10 years after 2011 not skating and picked up my Jawbreaker part 2 Eldridge deck. Big fan of the Chocolate idea. My friend who ripped his mini ramp to shreds is married to a Jenkins. Whether it's a relative of Andy probably not but we are all connected really close I feel. ❤ Rodney a true East Coast legend. Brooklyn Banks kinda became the Lower East Side Skatepark without the brick banks.

Amazing interview. If I'm not mistaken, Brian Blake gets 4th at that Phoenix contest. That was Dec. of '89. If Rod goes to SF after the contest, Jason and Dune would have been involved in putting together Blind, not Stereo. And that would have been through, obviously, Rocco, not DLX. Apparently Dune and Felix were supposed to be a part of Blind in the very beginning, but then went with World.

Dude ! This is gonna be the one for me ! I Remember riding my first Barker Barrett board and the Shut shark. Yea they weren’t the best but they represented who I was and where I lived. It wasn’t California that’s for sure. ( no disrespect to cali ) cause we all wanted to live that life just wanted it where we lived . I remember some of the Zoo Team (Ivan and Ryan ,Harold wasn’t on board I think he had something already. members trying out some of those boards never knew where they were from cause it wasn’t like the shut days. They were ok shapes but it wasn’t what it became. lol. I skated with so many of the best at the Brooklyn Banks to the LES Jersey L.I. Bronx. So many dope skaters man. You just don’t know. This is gonna be good. Peace to all Tri Borough Philly Conn. everyone !

I saw Shut team skate the N.S.A. am regional East combined at Kona. There was curb out from in Kona. We were doing ollie to "stall" (tail, nosepick, 50/50) , Shut team were hauling ass f/s Tail slides , 1st time I saw a ollie blunt on a curb.. They are doing stuff then on curbs in 87 that modern day curb is today. Shut team ALL were in the top 10 in Street at that contest.. The team was picked apart the next year..

@nigelgeiger6020 🤙Cheers Bro thanks supportive vibes from Australia... you'd laugh at my luck how life can change in a day....think I was cursed...I "was" amped up - work mates at warehouse where worked as job over covid convinced me to come for sk8 sesh with them (my life in 90s as a kid went left field evolved into somethin totally different which I was actually good at was fighting way better than my sk8ing skills = I was prevliged chance to be training fulltime with exclusively thai fighters in 90s then later head door man bouncer of nightclubs which I then started body building so from a 70kg kid to 130kg unit- it was nuts)...but yeh got amped -went online splashed out bought good stuff now as adult can afford (ie Girl pop secret "Malto" deck ,Ace trucks ,spitfire formula 4s =all.good stuff...nice Nike sB Bruin react shoes )....ready to hit park & show these young whipper snappers sum old skool hardcore haha....same week buyin gear freakin got injured at work= slipped on "flat" freakin floor!!!🙃...tore "TFCC" in wrist =year and half later lookin at 3rd surgery to harvest bone even its not even the tip of life changed to cascading effect on my life (couldnt work ,cant train in gym ,work wasnt payin insurance compensation wages, partner separated ,I lived in a affluent million dollar suburb a dream life in home over lookin sea ,total luxury high life to homeless ,depression(suicidal),partner has my pitbull, have 3 sets of lawyers & Barristers in life =went pear shaped but keepin chin up)......sk8 gods must really hate me ...i only wanted to chill in life at do some nose slides ,ollies & few cheeky flips haha....I'll get there again...but I still watch sk8 vids and nine club mean time🤙
