I grew up in a very violent home but my stepdad had an electronics shop. I rebuilt his hardware so I had a decent stereo and two tall speakers. Meddle was the first album I ever loved. I'd face my speakers towards each other and play this track while lying on a pillow in the middle. It was my first taste of freedom. Bless them for this. It took me to a place so deep, I forgot it existed.

I did the same but for a different reason, I grew up in a family with no family bonds, and listen to this song make me feel good for a while, I can't explain, but... well, it is waht it is (ah, sorry about my english, I am from a far far land)

First time I heard that song, it was at the french canadian national TV. They had a program on the sunday nigth where they played cultural events like theatre, classical concert and other things like that. It was quite rare for them to present something in english, the national TV had a french network and an english one and there was not many crossover. So, for them to put on the air Pink Floyd at Pompei was quite exceptional. I was about 15 at the time and got hooked rigth away! A year later, I was at my first rock concert to see Dark Side of the Moon at the Montreal Forum.

I went on a south pacific island holiday, excitedly carrying my brand-new mini disc player loaded with my favourite songs including the original Echoes. I set up a lounger on the beach, tee’ d up the player with this marvellous piece of music, slipped on my headphones and was ready to visit another dimension. The music was incredible, and I could feel my heart soaring with each new tempo, (almost) ready to cope with that amazing crescendo where you can truly feel at one with beautiful music. I was within seconds of the moment and I am sure I was floating above the lounger when I suddenly heard : “Excuse me sir, would you like a drink from the bar?” Completely shattered. But this is a lovely interpretation.

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves The echo of a distant tide Comes willowing across the sand And everything is green and submarine . And no one showed us to the land And no one knows the wheres or whys But something stirs and something tries And starts to climb towards the light . Strangers passing in the street By chance two separate glances meet And I am you and what I see is me And do I take you by the hand And lead you through the land And help me understand the best I can And no one calls us to move on And no one forces down our eyes No one speaks And no one tries No one flies around the sun . Cloudless every day you fall upon my waking eyes Inviting and inciting me to rise And through the window in the wall Come streaming in on sunlight wings A million bright ambassadors of morning . And no one sings me lullabies And no one makes me close my eyes So I throw the windows wide And call to you across the sky.
