The Ugly Duckling is an animated film by Walt Disney based on the fairy tale "The Ugly Duckling" by Hans Christian Andersen. Walt Disney actually produced two Silly Symphonies animated shorts based on the fairy tale, one in 1931 in black and white, and one in 1939 in Technicolor. The 1939 color film won the 1939 Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Cartoons). In this version, the baby swan's sufferings are shortened, as he is found by his family, after only a few minutes of rejection and ostracism, instead of a whole year. This abbreviated version is read by Lilo to Stitch in the 2002 Disney film Lilo & Stitch. The story has a deep impact on Stitch, who sets out to look for his real family.
The Ugly Duckling was Disney's last Silly Symphony.

This cartoon has underlying messages. Even when you don't fit in or are rejected by a group, there will be others out there that will love you for who you are. And never lose faith in finding love because it is out there for you.

I’m wondering if you even know the origins of this cartoon. It’s a fairytale story by Hans Christian Andersen written a long time before this cartoon called The Ugly Duckling, and this is merely Disney’s adaption of the story.

What actually made me tear up was when he turned around and away from the baby swans and the swan mother who both showed him they accepted him. In spite of their acceptance, he was too afraid to approach them, because he learned again and again what it's like to have your hopes shattered. It reminds me so fucking hard of myself. It hurts

7:52 you'll see the duckling look up in fright at the swans touch at first, because all it knew was harm and pain from others, but as soon as the swan gives the duckling a very gentle touch of reassurance and acceptances, that was when the duckling knew that the swan had accepted him and now knows what love is. I like that

It's interesting that before looking in to the water at his reflection he was completely accepting of the others and blissfully innocent. He had no reason to believe he didn't deserve to be there. Rejection can turn you against yourself, i'm surprised he didn't hate himself for being different out of desperation for acceptance. This paradox is one of the cruelist.

I first saw this cartoon when I was very young and even then in some deep level of my soul I identified with the duckling in every sense of the word 😪It's something that has haunted me ever since. Freaking cried like a baby when I saw him crying at the sight of his own reflection. :( he wasn't even ugly, just looked different - and sadly that's actually a pretty accurate depiction of society. I wish they had included the scene showing his triumphant transformation into a beautiful swan.

More people should talk about that scene where he takes a WOODEN duck as his adoptive parent. The thing doesn't talk and obviously isn't sentient, but he goes to it anyway and cuddles to it as if it was his dream parent. But even a *fake* mother isn't enough to give him love. The shot where the beak of the wooden duck comes from high and almost pummels him is greatly done, makes it look massive and like a giant out to get him. This is what makes the scene especially sad. As if not even fantasy was safe.

I actually got emotional when the beautiful and majestic mother swan showed a lot of compassion and love for him and not once acted proud of her own looks or showed any signs of embarrassment of having the duckling by her side. Instead, she displayed and expressed a lot of love and acceptance towards him even though he was going to swim away from them thinking he will face rejection again especially that he felt he was too ugly for anyone especially her and the fact she showed so much love, acceptance and compassion for him just made me tear up.

aramanth The ugly duckling was welcomed by the baby birds in the nest, he did not even look like them. It was the mother bird that did not welcome him. The mother duck and her other off springs were the worse ones in this story, they all rejected him, just because he was different. The ugly duckling saw the mother swan with the other cygnets, but his history of rejection made him think even though he looked like them, that he was still going to be rejected. Luckily he was pursued by them to make it clear, he was welcomed to become part of the family. Great Ending for sure!

7 lessons I got from this: 1.There're always other people out there who are just like you and you surely can fit in and be accepted. 2. If the family you are born in doesn't support you, take distance. 3. If you're different, it doesn't make you any less valuable, it makes you special. 4. Stop asking validation from the people who've always failed to give it to you. 5. Those people who always let you down, suddenly will change after your success and will pretend to be friends. 6. If you got rejected 99 times, it doesn't mean that there's no chance for the 100th attempt . 7. It takes time to find your reality and your place in life.

I had to laugh now that I finally understood what the parents were fighting about. But the rest made me cry, the story line is so, so sad, and the ending is so touching and beautiful. It made me cry as a child, and it still makes me cry as an adult.

This animation is pure gold. Especially the part where the duckling looks in the water and sees himself as ugly because well, he was told so just because he was different. It's about fitting in. So many people try that while all it takes is to find the right people who you can connect with and be part of that family. Doesn't matter if you're the nerd, the popular one, the black, the white, the 'american' or the immigrant arriving alone and lost... just find people like you or people who don't care what you are and enjoy life :)

I can remember as a young child watching this and immediately identifying with it. This was done so brilliantly, needing no words but only pure emotion to convey all the feelings we all struggle with. This is exactly what ties us all together no matter what age, race or gender we are. Thanks to Hans Christian Andersen and to Walt Disney. Watching it at 7 and again at 47 there is no difference. I am still brought to tears…

The ducks in the beginning always make me laugh. I hate how mean they were, but the quacks are just- yes EDIT: So, I just realized. Maybe a big reason the mom was mean to the cygnet (baby swan) was because the dad accused her of cheating. Then she got mad and decided to disown him. It's a terrible thing to do either way, but it makes sense now.

I always cry when I watch this. It is so sad but the ending is so happy for the little Swanling. I was always an ugly duckling. No matter how hard I tried and anywhere I went I never belonged. My own family rejected me and anywhere I went I was never liked, hated and laughed at. I really felt for the Swanling. I was always different than everyone. Even when I cried seeing this I always smiled at the end because he got the happy ending he deserved. I always think back to this when I feel the world is against me.

I’m young man with Autism and ADHD, I felt that I didn’t belong in this world and felt that I was worthless because of the struggles with Autism and ADHD I get depressed, felt worthless and cried a lot and still do sometimes and I felt suicidal as well. watching this video With the parents fighting reminding me of mine and the way the baby Swan wasn’t accepted by almost everyone and him crying at the end made me cry too and when the mother Swan hugged him at the end it pulled the strings of my heart and cry harder then before. I see that this film shows that there are people who will accept you for who you are and love you and I wish everyone to be loved and cared because we need it to survive and thrive. I also learned to love myself too and I am now doing better day by day with therapy, good friends and my family who now accepts me. God Bless everyone out there and wish everyone love. ❤️

The hardest part is 7:48 even when he's found his same species group that will take him in, he's dealt with so much rejection and taught that his looks equates to a negative reaction he doesn't see himself as part of the group and saves himself from further rejection by leaving, closing himself off from opportunities because he feels like he'll never belong.. And explain to me WhyTF does his original family pull a 180 and all the sudden WANTS him in their family???? WTF changed??

The way I thought of that scene was maybe off screen, they realized they were too harsh on the cygnet. Well never really know, but I don’t think it’s because they realized he was a swan. This is probably way more deep than it actually is supposed to be, but maybe after that few minutes the cygnet was gone, the mother mallard maybe realized, “okay, I know this isn’t mine, but I shouldn’t have been so cruel. If he comes back, let’s make sure we treat him better and find his real family.” Also, the chicks were learning from the mother’s reaction and only thought it was what should have been done. So when they saw the cygnet swimming with the swans, they called out, sort of inviting him in, maybe to say sorry, but also maybe happiness that he’s found where he belongs. This short has a lot of depth, but maybe I’m thinking too hard about it.
@thecajunphoenix
@thecajunphoenix 6 ай бұрын
@@LexTanMedia No. You nailed it right on the wicket. And the cygnet is not really in a forgiving mood toward the duck family who rejected and threw him out, as he ignores their calls just as they ignored his cries. The duck family and the father duck who bailed will both be in for a shock should they ever meet him when he is an adult swan with a mate and cygnets of his own. An adult male swan, or cob, would wipe the lakeshore with an adult male duck, or drake.

It's really cool to watch the 1931 and 1939 versions of these films back to back and see how much Walt and his team had developed as storytellers. By 1939, they had the Old Mill and Snow White under their belts, Pinocchio and Fantasia were nearly finished being animated, and Dumbo was partway through production, while Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and a prototype version of Lady and the Tramp were in the storyboarding pre-production stage. They had gone from more silly slapstick Fleischer style animation and storytelling to more mature and emotionally focused storytelling with camera angles and visual cues that live-action drama films use.

There are few things worse than being viewed as a freak and living life as an outcast. Don't get me wrong, I still have my family, but I never had a single friend in my life until I got to high school (his name is Robert Rodriguez and we've been best buddies for ten years). I'm happy now, but I still wonder why I endured so much pain during my childhood. In a way, I'm kind of like the real-life version of "The Ugly Duckling". Kindred, me and this character are.
