By filler cards I always understood cards that lack imagination, not those at a low power level. Say, Deck of Wonders was never a strong card (I know, blasphemy), but I would never call it filler, because it's so unique and fun. Whereas something like the Worgen Greaser was unplayable, but didn't even give you the incentive to play it for fun.

I've always imagined the term filler cards was more for the weak AND lame cards. One example would be audio medic (2/3 rush with finale gain lifesteal, since who has seen audio medic) would probably be classes as a filler card, just like most of the generic, unplayable manathirst cards of last set. It's like they added it just to print more cards with the new keyword. On the flip side, you've got cards like the new Rin for warlock. Not a playable card in any warlock deck right now, but it's super fun and cool to see so I couldn't imagine calling it filler.

Runeterra has fewer filler cards than Hearthstone, but they also have a much different design philosophy. They don’t release as many cards in a set, so there are fewer vanilla textless cards with stats on them. Also, strong decks are mostly made of grey and blue quality cards. Orange cards are limited to 6 total per deck, and purple cards tend to be narrowly powerful deck defining cards, rather than stronger versions of grey and blue cards like they often are in hearthstone.

This deck is amazing. Absorbent Armor gain. Callous Card Draw. And Kings Bane level Character Damage. This deck will probably be nerfed.

God, I love hero power druid. I'm a newer player and I got a decent number of druid cards from completing Apprentice Track so I ended up making a hero power ramping deck, and while I'm sure it is an unoptimized piece of shit, I have had a decent winrate with it so far. Had the funniest match against a Lich King who could not break past the infinite greybough taunt wall and I dug out a win despite all my draw/scaling cards being at the bottom of my deck along with like 8 plagues lol. I think I'm gonna like this game, at least at lower ranks where I can get away with not being super efficient. Now if I can just make that Wheel of DEATH warlock deck work... Edit: Its also important to note that I play Wild, so I am not exactly building to code here for balance lol.

If every card in the game was perfectly balanced with no card being OP and no card being "just a filler card", you would end up in a game with nothing but 1 mana 1/1, 2 mana 2/2, 3 mana 3/3, etc. Like the old adage goes in the FGC "the first street fighter was the most balanced one, because there was only 1 character and 2 moves (punch/kick), and there is a reason no one remembers that street fighter fondly."

@@karludwig8722 It is not as much "hope" to have nothing left, but more a potential way out when your deck is running low and you either need a final push or a miracle board clear. I'd compare it to c'thun the shattered, i've seen plenty of decks where its is just a back-up wincondition and never the main focus of the deck.

I'm guessing because you can get taunts to protect your face, and the hero power also give you a lot of attack and armor if you run out of juice. It's very situational anyway.

@@shudderstone but that's the thing normally your hero power is probably better already bc it got buffed by groovy cat and wild spirit, so why have malfurion to worsen your hero power. if you just want taunts there should be better options - or does the malfurion hero power keep the buffs?

​@@karludwig8722 Like the current version of Wildfire increasing the damage of ANY hero power that does damage, and carrying over when you change hero power, the effects of Free Spirit and Groovy Cat will increase ANY armour/hero attack gains from ANY hero power you use for the rest of the game. Warrior and Demon Hunter hero powers included, which applies to situations where you can play cards from other players (e.g. Tony) or classes (e.g. Halloween's dual-class arena event).

I have tried out the deck without the 2 Free spirits and put in 2 Savage strikers (basically Savagery on a stick). It saved me many times as I was able to clear more taunts without attacking them. I think the issue with Due Process is that Druid has almost no downside to playing it. They wind up with unlimited mana early on, so they can always dump their hand to make room, and with the way they ramp it gives them an insanely unfair advantage. Sure they don’t always draw the pieces to go unlimited but when they do it feels really bad.

There is absolutely a downside to playing Dew Process early in a lot of matchups, especially with the current speed of Wild. There are numerous examples on this channel of opponents blindly ripping Dew Process on turn 2 and getting punished for it. The downside is the reason it's not included in most successful Druid lists.

The downside is obvious, you increase your opponents card draw, which aggro decks love to use to kill you... It is good versus control decks that can't dump their cards fast enough or that do not end the game fast enough to not have to deal with fatigue, but if your opponent can use the additional card draw, then you have just paid 2 mana to help your opponent...

But then again if you're trying to play a "fun" or off meta deck in wild right now well it might not be as fun and probably won't be very fun when those off meta cards get burned by dew process and then they go infinite.

@@123fakestreettt Dew Process is a polarizing card, I don't disagree with that. But saying "it's badly designed" or "has almost no downside" does not convey that idea. Dew Process also isn't alone in that, nor is it the most popular or successful strategy that is keeping off meta decks at bay. Off meta decks will always lose more than meta decks or they wouldn't be off meta. The format is currently especially punishing for off meta decks, which is a bummer, but that's due to a wide variety of factors.

​@Roffle you raise a fair point but just because a card isn't good doesn't mean its not badly designed. And yes the term is perhaps vague and overused because that, in a way, is also subjective. But generally I would argue that any card that cannot be meaningfully interacted with is badly designed, simply on the basis that card games are supposed to be based around 2 decks interacting in some fashion and in recent time hearthstone has more and more printed cards that facilitate solitaire style games. Just my stupid oppinion though

If the hero power gains armor like warrior the free spirit will work, and for hunter wildfire will work to make it do more damage. Tldr as long as the hero power has one of the needed stats there already it will get the bonus from the cards.

@@Skittlez_apex Yeah that's really the problem. Making them empty won't change a whole lot, it just delays your ability to dump your hand the turn you break twig. You're still going to do it next turn. And, surprisingly, you end up with a lot of games where it doesn't even matter if you had to wait a turn. Accelerating 6+ mana in the early game is the problem, but making it so you have to manually break twig the "intended" way would make it completely unplayable unless you were specifically playing Guff Wildheart or Celestial Alignment. Which could be fine, it would relegate it to specific strategies instead of it being a ubiquitous auto-include in 80% of druid decks. All that being said, Instrument Tech is the biggest issue by a longshot. Twig still needs to be changed, but Instrument Tech is going to limit weapon design unless they print some kind of weapon silence tech that isn't complete garbage.
