I was interested in the Team Group 2230 drive as it has a 1mm graphene spreader included, and will just "fit", and apparently it can reduce average of 7 degrees even up to 10, but the drive underneath is so shit that once the write cache is filled (and it's SLC cache like all 2230 instead of proper Dram, not to mention QLC instead of TLC) that it drops to 100 mb/s or under. That's ludicrous. That's QLC. The WD SN740 apparently drops at worst to 500 ish which is still sata SSD speed, but you can't buy them with a proper warranty as they are an OEM part. Then I was looking at the 2280 adapter but I keep asking questions at Reddit and so far not one answer.. I am trying to work out whether those 2280 right angle adapters and the Ally can take a double sided SSD, as I found a great Gen 3 one WITH Dram and crazy long endurance, ideal for main drive, and specs are 3500/2800 which is still absolutely fine for any game in existence but that also mean LESS heat. And proper dram cache means more sustained writes anyway, it never get worse than about 1500 no matter what. Don't let Gen 3 scare you for an Ally. Less heat is a good thing and I promise, between 3500 and 4500 read, you will not even lose 1 second between game loads, honest. This sort of Gen 3 vs Gen 4 game loading thing has been tested ad nauseum and it's been proven. These max speeds are only for large contiguous file reads and writes. BUT, can I fit a double sided SSD in the adapter? If anyone is reading and knows, THANK YOU, as I have been trying to find out for over a week now, and I can't risk spending 325 AUD on a 4TB SSD if it's not gonna work. If I need single sided, there are less options and more expensive. That also said, do not buy a 7000+ speed drive for your Ally unless you are willing to have the fans at 100% at all times, and even then. That small space, those speeds and heat generated, NO GOOD and not worth it, it will just throttle all the time anyway. Heck, I have the massive GT77 laptop here, which has pretty much the best thermals and interior space of any current laptop, and the gen 4, even with the built in heat pads to transfer heat, and a cooling pad blowing cool air through the bottom at all times directly onto the SSD, well they easily can hit 80 degrees and throttle just from file copying and pasting. In this massive deep chassis. Forget it in an Ally unless you are an uber modder and know how to create your own custom cooling/airway solution for it and don't mind blasting your warranty away. Final Question, plug and play solution ,the Seagate 520n has come out, with 2TB and best endurance of all the 2230 2Tb drives, but there is not one single place on the web that says whether it's QLC or TLC or even if it has SLC caching. Seagate are a reputable brand and are dodging all that main info and it's one of the more expensive drives.. Yet the Micron 2400 also has 600 TBW and is QLC, so just because it has better endurance than the WD 740 and Sabrent Rocket etc, doesn't mean it's TLC. IF anyone knows if it IS TLC, I am going to make life easy for myself, spend the premium and just get the 2230 Seagate 520N drive in 2TB and just call it a day. But I won't touch a QLC drive. it's amazing how impossible it is to find something out when you need to LOL
@cppctek Жыл бұрын
I tried a few new drives. My suggestions are a good single sided tlc drive. Ideally the ones that do around 5000mbps. If you get the 7400mbps drives they just run too too hot

Great Video....... I could understand this process 2-3 months ago but for my 3hr research I found it better to get a 4tb Crucial P3 Plus 4TB PCIe Gen4 3D NAND NVMe M.2 2280 SSD [$205us]. Use M.2 NVMe heatsink, 2280 SSD Heat Sink Support Single Double Sided with Thermal Silicone Pads for PC for the SSD [$10us]. Use PCIE4.0 Transfer Board for Rog Ally Handheld SSD Adapter 90 Degrees [this will make the installation horizontal instead of vertical] $10us. So no need to cut any plastic or need to move antenna. Yes it's expensive but easier to install & you get close to 4tb, the 2tb M.2 2230 SSD is $200us [standard replacement].

This adapter for 2280 bottlenecks and drops FPS.
@cppctek3 ай бұрын
@vidaboa1010 that’s. It true at all lolol whoever told you that lied to you. The adapter does not drop speed at all on the nvme or transfer rates. If you used this nvme adapter and your seeing less fps that has nothing to do with the adapter. That’s a windows issue or configuration issue and you should not see a single fps difference. If you want to prove me wrong go ahead and take out all the variables by using the 2230 drive in this adapter and then on the ally, run benchmarks like timespy 3-5x in a row and average results, then run a few games in game benchmarks 3-5x each and then lastly use crystal disk mark to look at the drive speed test on each method

@vidaboa1010 don’t take my word for it, try it yourself. Proof is in the pudding. I can say just go look at my entire channel. Out of the tons and tons of people who follow me who have done that same adapter not a single person I know has ever had any issues with it. It’s a pcie 4.0 extension essentially. It does not do anything what so ever that impacts fps. It’s just extended the traces about an inch in length and unless you’re using a pcie extension that goes over a foot. Theres no way

Here's another tip to cool the ally down! On the back casing there's a mesh to stop dust n stuff, remove it and you'll quickly see they've covered half the vent with a solid black bit of sticker 🤣 now is it me or is there no point to this other than blocking a much needed vent??

Need your opinion: I got the exact heatsink you recommended installed. Got the backplate back on. Screws are aligned and screwing back in. There is a slight bulge pushing up on the back place. Barely noticeable and I'm not really concerned with that. However, do you think, overtime, that pressure pushing down on the SSD would be an issue?
@cppctek Жыл бұрын
Nah it won’t be a problem but dm me a pic on discord and let me see what ya got. I may have some tips for ya but it shouldn’t budge. Did you use the 1mm pad? Also if you got the heatsinks with the pre applied sticky tape did you remove that tape
@andrewhunt9278 Жыл бұрын
@@cppctek Right on. Happy to send pics but I can't seem to find you on Discord. Perhaps Im just missing where it is listed. I used the pre-applied pad and I removed the layer that protects the sticky. The heatsink is sticking to the SSD.
@LAA51 Жыл бұрын
@@andrewhunt9278 I got the same problem too, I couldn't get the back case to close, until I screwed it down (Not that I had to do it extra tight) and it seems to bulge a little too, but again hard to notice. Used a 25x25x10 heatsink and 1mm pad.
@donkamei732 Жыл бұрын
Just ordered mine and hopefully it won't bulge... That is the one worry I have. What if the heatsink height is 6mm? I've seen some that are 20x20x6mm, that should be more than enough for the clearance? But it'll probably be a little less effective on the cooling side huh.. 🤔

Can I use size Copper Heatsink 25*25*7 ? What should I choose between aluminum and copper?
@cppctek2 ай бұрын
You can but the increased weight is going to make it come off unless you use the same thickness I used so pressure is actually applied to the heatsink. Without pressure the heatsink won’t transfer heat. Thermally with something that size copper isn’t much if any better than aluminum. Use a 20x20x10

I am gonna try this. Thanks for the video. Do you think 20x20x10mm is a better option since it allows for more space on the sides to air to flow through the board? or does 20x20x10mm not cover the entire SSD? Also, will there be a perf difference between 1mm and 0.5mm thermal pad?

1mm pad is ideal. Anything smaller and it doesn’t have the squish it needs to conform and fit. I’ve tested temps also with multiple sizes and 1 is always the best for nvme drives
