Thank you! Your video helped a great deal. I had a 1080Ti that I put an EK block on ages ago, and I wanted to throw the stock cooler back on so I could throw it in my living room PC. I had no idea where the backplate screws went, but your video gave me a good idea.

Hi Rick, thank you so much for this wonderful quality video and explanation. I'm going to do this soon, my card is reaching 85 degrees under load these days. What do you do for grounding while working on GPUs? Is it a good idea for me to use a wrist strap?
@rickstechrepairs

iv never had drama's with grounding, i usually make sure i touch metal prior to touching the card.

I did on mine but the kryonaut dries out in 6 months to a year, just keep an eye on temps and if they start going up in 6 months you know what to do, i went with MX4 on the last repaste as i ran out of kryonaut, seems to perform the same on this card.

ABOUT THOSE TWO SCREWS! :D.. So, I switched up my thermal paste and managed to drop my GPU temps by a sweet 10°C. I was stoked at first, but then, mid-game, my screen went black, and the GPU fans cranked up to full blast. I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on but suspected it had to do with opening up the GPU. I tried reapplying the paste, but no dice. Everywhere I checked suggested high temps were the culprit, triggering the GPU's self-protection mode. But my temps were low-I even logged them right up to the crash. Then it hit me: my GPU only monitors the die temps. The real issue? Those two screws tighten the thermal pad!!! I tightened them a bit more than I initially dared, and like magic, no more crashes. So, pro tip: if you ever open up your GPU, leave those two screws alone!

Haha that is how I found this video. I was experiencing this issue but it seemed that my thermal paste was just dried out as I have had the GPU for 4 years or so.

lower your oc settings then, and check fans if they spin correctly.... You can set rpm limit in some bioses...if its old card, could be bad capacitors...

Is spreading the thermal paste really needed? Can you not just do the pee/rice size like you'd normally do a CPU cooler? EDIT: spread the paste, don't do the rice grain technique (explanation in the replies)
@rickstechrepairs
@rickstechrepairs Жыл бұрын
Yes you could
@SpareSomeChange8080
@SpareSomeChange8080 Жыл бұрын
I've just bought some from my local PC store, and they said you need to spread it. Spread it because current GPUs do no have an IHS/lid like CPUs do, you're applying it directly to the die, so any uncovered silicon can die from overheating. Good job I searched for this! I would have made an expensive mistake otherwise!
